To all whom it may concern Be it 'known that I, For- N MCINTYBE, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Electromagnetic Apparatus, of which the following is a, full,

The invention relates to Ruhmkorili coils and similar apparatus, and its object is to provide a new and improved electromagnetic apparatus arranged to increase "the speed and force of the vibratory armature, and to lnsure an unlnterrupted response of the armature for .a long period without the danger of the armature sticking at the con- J tacts.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same,
which will be more fully described hereinelevation of the same, the fixed contact being omitted.
On the base A of the electromagnetic apparatus is mounted theusual electromagnet B carrying the primary and secondary wires and the central core O, opposite the outer end of which is arranged the armatureD heldon the free end of a spring :armature lever D fixed at its other end in a suitable post E carried by the base A. Although I have shown a spring armature lever D it is evident that any other form of-vibratory armature may be em ployed. On the armature lever D between the armature D and the fixed end is held a contact D opposite a contact F secured or formed on one end of a bar F adjustably secured in a post G attached to the base A.
On the base A is mounted a magnet H which may be in the form of a permanent magnet or in the shape of an electromagnet by having a wire H coiled around a. piece of iron and connected with a suitable source of electrical energy, such as a battery or the like. In order to obtain the most efiicient result I prefer to arrange the pole H in sucha manner that the line or path of the energy is'approximately at right angles to the movement of the armature D. The magnet H is wholly separate from the armature D and its lever D, and is adjustabie on the base A to permit of bringing the pole H as close as possible to the arma ture D, without however touching the latter and impeding its vibratory motion. F or the purpose mentioned the magnet H is provided with a flange H having an elongated aperture H engaged by a screw J screwing into the base A, so that on loosening the screw J the magnet can be adjusted to bring the point H into the desired relation to the armature D. When this has been done the screw J is screwed up to secure the magnet H in position on the base A. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a piece of iron H extends at right angles to the core C, and its delivery point H is in close proximity to the armature D without touching it. In this case the piece of iron receives induced magnetism from the core O of the electromagnet by a path approximately at right angles to the travel of the vibratory armature D. The piece of iron H may abut against a permanent magnet H to do rive magnetism from the said permanent magnet H Now, the piece of iron H as well as thepermanent magnet H are provided with slotted flanges H, H engaged b screws J J for securin the )iece of iron H and the permanent magnet H in position after the same has been adjusted, to bring the piece of iron H in proper relation to the armature D, and to abut the permanentmagnet H on the piece of iron H.
By the arrangement described, the magnets H, H or the piece of iron H and its permanent magnet H each form a suppleinentary means forincreasing the energy of the core C of the electromagnet B by way of the armature D so that the latter is Inone forcibly attracted when the electromagnet B is energized, and when the electromagnet B is deiinergizcd then the armature D and its lever D return to normal position by the in herent and unimpeded resiliency of the armature lever. By the arrangement described, the movement of the armature D armature is had for a long period.
- It is understood that in either of the forms shown and described the armature is the medium for the transmission of the magnetic energy between the core C and thesupplementary means, and as the latter is not in contact with the vibratory portion of the armature and is located outside of the path of movement-of the armature, it is evident that the said supplementary means do not impede or retard the vibratory motion of the armature, and hence a proper response thereof relative to the action of the core and a forceful return movement ofthe armature,

It is understood that the action of the supplementary means referred to increases or dlminishes according to its own force, that is, if stronger magnets are used the force of the supplementary means is increased, and reverse'dly decreased on diminishing the force of the supplementary means.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
1. An electromagnetic apparatus of the class described comprising a main electroclass described comprising a main electroinagnet having a straight core, an auxiliary magnet disposed in the field of said main electromagnet so as to augment the same, an armature disposed near one pole of said magnet and arranged to move toward and away therefrom in a direction parallel with the axis of the main magnet, one pole of said auxiliary magnet beingbent into closeproximity. to said armature, and being adapted to \project a field against the armature at right angles to its line of movement.
