To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. PREUS, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Sawyers Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide a light and inexpensive device which can be applied to the side of a post or the like, as in the cellar of a dwelling house, and employed to clamp or hold light sticks of wood when the same are sawed, either for kindlings or for any other purpose; to provide such a device which will have a wide range of use or be suitable to clamp all sorts of sticks or pieces of board; to provide such a device which can be mounted on a post or similar surface out of the way and will not occupy floor space; to obtain a simple and strong construction which shall be durable, and not likely to get out of order, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description. Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, Figure 1 is a front view of my im proved clamp, mounted upon a post or the like in position for use; Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same taken on line A-A, of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line BB of Fig. 2.
In said drawings, 1 indicates an upright post or joist such as is common in cellars of houses and similar places, and to which is shown attached by means of screws 2 or the like, the plate-like body portion 3 of my improved clamp. Said body portion is elongated vertically and adjacent to its lateral edges are forwardly projecting ribs 4, 4, preferably roughened or serrated along their outer edges 5, to better engage the stick 6 to be sawed. Arms 7, 7 project forwardly and upwardly from the lower ends of the ribs 4, 4, to form a rest or seat for the stick 6 to be held, and which arms are also preferably roughened or serrated at their upper edges 8, as shown.
Extending longitudinally of the plate 3 and preferably substantially central thereof is a slot or slideway 9, and at the opposite edges of said slot are flanges 10, 10, projecting forwardly from the plate 3 and then toward each other in over the slot 9, so as to form a narrower slot 11 in front of the post or joist 1 and thus forms a slideway forthe T head of a holding lever 14 adapted to project forwardly through the slot 11 and away from the plate 3 between the arms 4, 4, so that pressure can be applied to its outer end to hold the stick 6 in place, as shown in Fig. 1. Said T head is formed by trunnions 15, 15 on opposite sides of the end of the lever 14, adapted to enter the sockets 13 or pass up and down the slideway 9 to reach sockets at any height. The tops of the channel 9 and slot 11, preferably open out through the upper end of the body plate 3, so that the head of the holding lever can pass entirely out of its slideway if desired. It will be noted that the said trunnions 15, 15 not only fulcrum the lever 14 to swing pivotally, but also prevent said lever from escaping forwardly from the slot- 11 and away from the body, portion. The
lever is thus always in position ready to swing up and down or adjust to suit the stick to be sawed.
In operation, the stick 6 to be sawed is laid across the forwardly projecting arms 7 and the lever 14 is slid down the slideway until itcomes in contact with the stick 6, when a slight outwardly downward pull on the handle of said lever will seat the trunnions 15 in the right sockets for proper fulcruming of the lever. When this has been accomplished, the handle of the lever may be pressed downward with one hand while the other hand is free to use a handsaw.
Although the gripping lever may be straight, I prefer to have it curved, as shown in the drawings. This is to extend the range of use of the clamp, as it is evident that should one wish to saw a stick of large diameter the holding of the same would be greatly facilitated by slipping the lever head 13 out of the top of the slideway 9 and reversing the curve of the lever arm, as shown in dot-ted lines in Fig. 2.
Various modifications in the detail construction of my improved sawyers clamp may be employed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself herein, except as the state of the art may require.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A sawyers clamp comprising in combination a body portion adapted to be secured in an upright position and having a vertical slot with forwardly and upwardly closed sockets on its opposite walls, a rest for a stick to be sawed on the lower part of said body portion, and a lever having its end lying in said slot and provided with trunnions to enter said sockets.
2. In a sawyers clamp, the combination of a body portion having an upwardly extending slot open at its top "and at the back of the body portion and provided at its opposite side walls with undercut sockets opening rearward, a lever having an end adapted to slide in said slot and provided with trunnions to enter said sockets, said lever adapted to project forwardly from the body portion, and arms projecting from said body portion and forming therewith a rest for a stick to be sawed beneath said lever.
3. In a sawyers clamp, the combination of a body portion having an upwardly eX- tending slot and a series of upwardly and forwardly closed fulcrum seats arranged along said slot and open toward the rear side of the body portion, a lever in said slot projecting forwardly from the body portion, means on the lever for engaging said seats and preventing escape of the lever forwardly through the slot, and a rest projecting forwardly from the body portion beneath said lever in such relation to said lever as that a stick to be sawed can be clamped upon said rest by downward swinging of the lever.
