IMPROVEMENT' IN vrees. s
,l 4 i i Thel Schedule referred to in these Lettersl Patent and making part of the same l v `We, EDWIN CRAwLnY-and 'lHoaIAs L. BAYLIEs,
of Richmond, county of Wayne and State of Indiana, `have invented vcertain Improvements in Vises, of
which the following is a specification.v ,j v
Our invention relates to improvementsiu, that class of vises in which the `movable -jaw is adj usted directly by the hand of the operator without the intervention of screws or other devices, and in which aratchet and pawl are. used to retain the nut improper position `while the required pressure is produced by the screw.
The first part of our invention relates toa combi- "nation of deviceswhereby thc pawl is caused to be engaged with and released from the teeth of the ratchet by the movements of the operating lever.
rlyhe second part of our invention relates toa conibination of devices whereby both the adjustment of the jaw and thegrippingof `an, article are effected by the action'of -the screw.` l f i Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sect-ion through themiddle` of `the vise,.and shows the positions the y parts assnmewhen thejaws are gripping an artic-le between them.
j 'Figure 2 isa tlansverse vertical section of the box- I slide, shaft,`and nutptaken through the dotted line slide C.`
` That portion of saidxshai'twhich is inclosed in the box-slide is provided `withrthreads K, having the same pitch as those ordinarily used in rises.
y The end of said shaft which projectsbeyond the outer face of jaw A is provided with a boss, F, through an opening in which a lever, L, passes for the purpose of turning said shaft.
On that portion of the Vshaft E'which extends beyond the rearend ofthe box-slide is secured a nut or washer, tinywhich, in" conjunction witlrthe shoulder of boss F, prevents any endwise mot-ion of shaft E, independently of the movable jaw.
H is a nutwhich` embraces shaft E, andis pro-, `videdwththreads which engage .with those ou saidshaft. Said nutfits snngiyyinto the interior of boxslide C, but moves freely endwise therein.`
J is a pa'wl, which is hinged to the front end ofnut l H at a pointben-eath shaftxlil, by pin, s.
Atcertain times, as will be hereinafter explained,
said pawl engages with the ratchet-teeth 'r formed in the upper face of` bed-plate E; K A' portion of the underside of pawl J- is formed into aninclined plane t'.
A is apin which passes through the side fof box v slide C, and extends into the interior of the saine sui'- iciently to raise pawl J from the ratchet-teeth, when the inclined plane on the said pawl, islbrought into contact with said pin.
W' is a screw or pin, (shown in dotted lines,) which extend through bed-plate G, and is for the purpose of retaining nut H in a fixed posit-ion, when the vise is.
to be used as an ordinary vise, as will he hereinafter explained. 4
The operation of the mechanism is as follows:
To release pawl J` from the ratchet fr, shaft E is turned to the left by means of lever L, which causes nut H to novc endwise on shaft E until the inclined plane .ft on the-pawl comes in contact with pin a, when the continued-'turning of the shaft raises, by the action of the said inclined plane, the pawl from theVv ratchet. Jaw A is th'en free to be adjusted with ireference to' the article to be held in the vise.
To secure an article in the same, jaw A` isfbronght against said article, and the lever L ist-hen turned to the right, which movement causes nut H to move endwise on shaft E until the inclined planetq on pawl J is free from pin a, when said pawl drops and engages with the ratchet fr and prevents any further movement ofthe said nut, when the continued turning of the lever L to the right causes thejaws to compress the article between them with a force due to the action of the threads K with those in nut H.v
The arrangement ofthe parts herein shown and described may be changed, so that the vise may be operated as an ordinary vise, in'which'both the adjustment of the j aw. and the gripping of an article are effected by the action of the screw-shaft E.
To'inake the change above referred to, the lever L' is turned to the left until pawl J is disengaged from the ratchet 1', as hereinbefore explained.
VJ aw A is then withdrawn until the hole y, formel -in lng t, (shown in dotted-linea) is brought directly over pin W, and the nut H heilig ,retained in this position by means of said pin W, the vise may be op.-
crated in all respects as an ordinary screw-vise.
Another change 'in the action of .the vise may be effected by placing pin W? in either of the holes b lj',
(shown in dot-ted lines,-) formed in bed-plate G, the jaw A having been first withdrawn sniiicicntiy to permit said pin to enter behindv nut H.
By thisV meansthe jaw A is-adjusted by the action of .the vscrew-shaft E, for a certain distance, which dis tance is limited by the position of pin XV, and for the remainder ofthe distance through which said jaw is de signed to move, the' adj nstment is eeeted by the 2. The combination of the movable nut H, screw hand of operator, as hereinbefore explained. or pin W, screw E, and jaws A and B, substantially Having thus described our invention, as described, and for the purposesct forth.l What we claim, and desire to secure ily-Letters In testimony whereof, we have signed our names Patent, is-A to this specication'before two subscribing witnesses.
1. The-combination of nnt H, pawl J, pin a, ratchet EDWIN CRAWLEY. -r, and screw-shaft E, `when arrangedas dcscribed,.so THOMAS L. BAYLIES, that a movement of the nut, by means of the screw, in one direction releases the pawl from the ratchet, Witnesses: and a movement thereof in the opposite direction en- FBEDK. KooNEs, gages said pawl and ratchet, substantially as described, L. W. CONNOR.
and for the purpose set forth.
