To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANcis Konrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Lansing, county of Ingham, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Serving Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements serving apparatus.
My improved serving apparatus is especially designed by me for use in holdingrolls of gummed tape, cutting into .strips of the desired length and moistening the same. My invention can, however, be readily adapted for use in applying an adhesive to the tape or to sheets of paper or fabric delivered from a roll or the like. 7
I use the term moistening in this specification as the embodiment shown is provided with a moistening roller. Itwill, however, be understood that the invention comprehends means for applying adhesive as well as moisture.
The main objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved combination roll holder cutter and moistening or adhesive applying device for rolls of tape or the "like. Second, to provide a device of the class described, in which the-strips delivered have finger-hold portions at each end which are not supplied with moisture or adhesive,
Third, to provide a device of the class described which is simple and economical in structure and very convenient to use.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. .The invention is clearly defined and point-- ed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, \forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure-I is a perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention. Fig. II is a detail plan view thereof, the roll holder being omitted. Fig. III is a detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II, thetape support and cutter being shown by dotted lines in its raised ppsit-ionand by full lines in its cut-ting position. Fig. IV is a detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 44 of Fig. II with the tape support and cutter shown by full lines in its elevated'position and by dotted lines in its lowered or tape moistening position.
In the drawings, similar reference char acters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the lettered parts of the drawing, the base 1 is preferably provided with feet 2 at its corners. he wateror adhesive receptacle 3, is in the structure illustrated, formedintegrally with the base, the base illustrated being a easting. Thetape roll holder consists of a pair of side plates or disks '5 which clamp the ends of thetape spool 6, indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I. The yoke-likesupport 7 is mounted -'on the base at one end thereof, the spool spindle 8 being threaded to receive the clamping nut 9. By this simple means, tension may be applied to the roll of tape. The water or adhesive applying roller 10 is provided with suitable journals atits ends arranged in notch-like bearings in the ends of the re- 1 ceptacle 3. v
Between the roll holderand the receptacle '3, I arrange a U-shaped bracket 11 having a cross rod 12 at its upper end under which the tape 13 passed '(see Figs. III and IV); The tape jaw 14 coacts with this fixed rodlike jaw 12 toprovide tape holder or feed jaws, the tape being arranged over the jaw 14 which is preferably in the form of a blade spring having a forwardly projecting flange 15- at' its upper end. The jaw 14 is provided with a flange-like foot 16 at its lower end which rests on the bottom of the bracket 11 and is secured by the bracket attaching screws 17.
I pl ovide' a combined tape cutter and support hich, in the structure illustrated, consists of a pair of plates 18 and 19 spaced to provide a tape slot or to receive the tape therebetween, as is clearly illustrated in Figs. III and V. 'The plate 18 is provided with downwardly-projecting ears 20 at its ends which embrace the arms of the bracket lland are pivotally mounted on the rod- 21. The catch 24 is, in the structure illustrated, mounted on the cross bar 12.
In use, the tape is drawn down over the moistening roller, as shown in Fig. IV, untila strip of the desired length is secured. The pull onthe tape swings the cutter fromthe position shown by full lines in Fig. IV to the position shown by dotted'lines into close proximity with the moistening roller. When the pull on the tape is released, the cutter swings to the cutting position shown by full lines in Fig. III, against the catch or stop 24 which automatically swings into engaging position. The tape is then severed by pulling against the cutting edge 23 of the cutter. When it is desired to secure another piece, the catch 24 is released, which allows the cutter to swing to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. III and full lines in Fig. IV.v The-cutter swings back exposing the end of the tape to provide a finger piece. The support ,is so arranged relative to the moistening roller that the end of the portion severed does not come in contact with r the moistening roller, and an unmoistened provided at each end of the trated and described the same in detail in 1 an embodimentwhich I find very satisfactory. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the various modifications possible as the disclosures made herein will be sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, to adapt my improvements to the uses desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure .by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with the base, of a roll holder mounted thereon; a moistening roller; a U-shaped-bracket arranged on said base between said roll holder and moistening roller; a cross rod at the upper end of said bracket under which the tape is passed; a blade spring having a forwardly proj ecting flange at 1ts upper end arranged to sup port the tape and to coact with said rod to provide tape holder jaws; a tape cutter and support comprising a pair-of plates and from said tape holder jaws and said moistening roller; aspring arranged to hold said cutter yieldingly upward, the tops of the arms ofthe bracket being adapted to serve as stops for said cutter; and a catch plvoted on said cross rod to engage said cutter when it is in an intermediate position,'for the purpose specified.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination with the base, of a roll holder mounted thereon a moistening roller; a U-shaped bracket arranged on said base between said roll holder and moistenmg roller; a cross rod at the upper end of said bracket under which the tape is passed; a blade spring having a forwardly projectmg flange at its upper end arranged to support'the tape and to coact with said rod to provide tape holder jaws; a tapecutter and support pivotally mounted on said bracket to swing toward and from said tape holder jaws and said moistening roller; a spring arranged to hold said cutter yieldingly upward; and a catch.
. 3. In a structure of the class described, the
combination with the base, of a roll holder mounted thereon; a moistening roller; a U-shaped bracket arranged on said base between said roll holder and moistening roller; a cross rod at the upper-end of said bracket under which the tape is passed; ablade spring having a forwardly projecting flange at its upper end arranged to support the tape and to coact with said rod to provide tape holder jaws; and a tape cutter and support comprising a pair of plates spaced to receive the tape therebetween, the forward edge of the upper p1ate being adapted as a cutter, said upper plate having down,- turned pivot cars at its ends pivotally mounted on said bracket to swing toward and from said tape holder jaws and said moistening roller.
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination "with the base, of a rollholder mounted thereon; a moistening roller;

vide tape holder jaws; a tape cutter and support pivotally mounted on 'sald bracket to swing toward and from said tape holder jaws and said moistening roller; and acatch arranged to engage said cutter when it is in an intermediate position, for the purpose specified.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a roll holder-mounted thereon; a U-shape'd bracket; a cross rod at the upper end of said bracket under which the tape is passed; a blade spring I cutter yieldingly upward; and a catch arhaving a forwardly projecting flange at its upper end arranged to support the tape and to coact with said rod to provide tape holder jaws; a tape cutter and support comprising a pair of plates spaced to receive the tape therebetween, the forward edge of the upper plate being adapted as a cutter, said upper plate having down-turned pivot cars at its ends pivotally mounted on said bracket to swing toward and from said tapeholder jaws; a spring arranged to hold said\ cutter yieldinglyupward, the. tops of the arms of the bracket being adapted to serve asstops' for said cutter; and a catch pivoted on said crossrod to engage said cutter when it is in an intermediate position, for, the purpose specified. r

In a structure of the class described, the combination of a roll holder mounted, thereon; a U-shaped bracket; a cross rodat the upper end of said bracket under which the tape is passed; a blade spring ,having'a forwardly projecting flange at its upperfend arranged to support the tape and to coact with'said rod to provide tape holder jaws; a tape cutter and support pivotally mounted on. said bracket to swing toward and from said tape holder jaws; a spring arranged to hold said cutter yieldingly upward; and a catch pivoted on said cross rod toengage said cutter when it is in an intermediate position, for the purpose specified. t

Ina structure of-the class described, the combination of a roll holder; a moistening .device; tape holder jaws comprising a fixed jaw and av coacting spring jaw, saidtape being passed under the fixed jaw and over the spring aw; a tape cutter pivotally mounted to swing toward and from said tape holder jaws and said moistening device; a spring arranged to hold 'said cutter 1 yieldingly upward; .and a catch arranged -to engage said cutter when it is in" an intermediate position, for the purpose specified.

In a structure of the class described, the combination of aroll holder; a moistening device; feed jaws comprising a-fixed jaw and a coacting spring jaw, the tape being passed under the "fixed jaw and over the spring, jaw; a cutter comprising a pair of plates spaced to receive the ta e, thefforward edge of the upper plate being adapted as a cutter pivotally mounted to swing to- Ward and from said feed jaws; and a catch 11.
