EXHAUST-MUFFLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed October 16, 1911. Serial No. 654,925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS G. SNYDER, a citizen of the United -States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Exhaust-ltlulllers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved mufiler for the exhaust of internal combustions, and has for its object to provide a mufller which will be very etlicient in operation, and which may be manufactured at comparatively little expense. To this end the improved muffler preferably consists of a pan-shaped or discoidal hollow body portion within the chamber of which are numerous transverse pins on all or a portion of which are placed loosely coiled wires or springs, to battle the passage of the exhaust, the said body being provided with inlet and outlet ports for the passage ofthe products of combustion from the engine. Communicating with the said pan-shaped or discoidal hollow body, and preferably .formed integral therewith, is a second pan-shaped or discoidal hollow body containing an inclined perforated plate which further battles the passage of the exhaust, and thus adds to the efficiency of the muffler.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a broken-out fiat view of the improved muffler, and Fig. 2 is a broken-out edge view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, the improved mufiler comprises two fiat hollow bodies 12 and 13, preferably of discoidal form and having communicating chambers. The chamber of body 12, into which the exhaust first enters, is provided with numerous pins 141 a part or all of which are encircled by loosely coiled wires or'springs'15. The pins 14 maybe cast integral with eitherthe body 12, or with the cap or cover plate 17, ormay be formed separate from and be properly secured to either orboth of these parts.
The discoidal bodies 12 and 13 have communicating chambers preferably. afforded by-a connecting pipe--18. Within the chamber of the body 13 is an inclined perforated plate 19 through the apertures in which the exhaust, entering the muffler first at the inlet pipe or part 20, finally leaves the mufller at the outlet pipe or part 21. Within the chamber of the body 13 is a central post 22 to which the perforated plate 19 is attached in any suitable manner, as by screws 23, and the chamber of the said body 13 is closed by a removable cap or cover plate 24. The post 22 may be cast integral with or attached to either the body 13 or the cap or cover plate 24.
The discoidal bodies 12 and 13 are preferably-provided with central openings 25 for the passage of bolts or screws by which the mufiler is to be secured in place. The caps or cover plates 17 and 24 are preferably secured in place by screws 26 tapped in lugs 27.
The operation of the improved muttler will be readily understood from the foregoing, The passage of the exhaust through the mutller will first be battled and mullled by the numerous pins and loosely coiled wires or springs in the chamber of the body 12, and then be further ballled' and muflled by the inclined perforated plate in the chamber of the body 13.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An exhaust mufller comprising two hollow bodies'having communicating chambers one of which is provided with numerous transverse battling devices, and the other of which is provided with an inclined perforated bafiling plate.
2. An exhaust mufiler comprising two hollow bodies having communicating chambers one of which is provided with numerous pins and encircling loosely coiled wires or springs, and the other of which is provided with an inclined perforated battling plate.
3. An exhaust mufller comprising two hollow discoidalbodies having communicating chambers one of which is provided with numerous pins and encircling loosely coiled wires or springs, and the other of which is provided with an inclined perforated baffling'plate, said discoidal bodies each having a removable cap or cover plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS Gr. SNYDER.
Witnesses MABEL L. ROWE, R. T. THOMAS.
