Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed August 16, 1911. Serial N 0. 644,283.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OHARLns HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hinges, especially designed for use on boxes, shipping-crates, or other receptacles.
The primary object of the invent-ion is the provision of a hinge in which adjacent sections of a receptacle -may be connected together, so that the same will normally lie in alinement with each other, when folded inwardly with respect to each other.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hinge in which a pair of sections may be joined, without requiring the securing of the hinge to the said sections by means of fasteners, and that will possess the requisite strength for severe usage.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hinge which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan. View of adjacent sections of a box or the like, showing the hinge applied thereto constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, looking toward the opposite faces of the sections. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of a slight modification of the invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hinge shown in Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters indicate cor responding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a portion of one section, and 6 a portion of the adjacent section of a box, receptacle, or the like, the same being connected by means of a hinge, presently described. The hinge comprises a substantially triangular shaped plate 7, from the wider end of which projects bendable extensions 8, the plate 7 being disposed against the inner face of the section 6, while the bendable extensions 8 are bent about the said section 6, the free ends of the plate 7 and extensions 8 being inturned to form spurs 9 which are driven into said section 6, thereby securely fastening the said plate 7 upon the latter, without the use of screws or nails. Suitably secured to the section 5 is a substantially Ushaped reinforcing plate 10, through which are passed wire loops 11, the ends of which are suit-- ably twisted together, as at 12. These loops 11 are further twisted to form eyes 13 loosely engaging suitable openings formed in the plate 7, thereby hinging the said section 5 to the section 6, the eyes 13 being disposed substantially flush with the inner faces of the sections to permit the same to easily fold inwardly, and also to permit the sect-ions to aline with each other, as will be clearly obvious.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, there is shown a slight modification of hinge, wherein the plate 15 is formed with a beveled portion 16, and likewise the loops 17 are formed with beveled portions 18 corresponding to the adjacent beveled edges of the sections 16 and 17, so as to prevent any possibility of the sections bulging outwardly at the hinged joints thereof. Thus, it will be seen that all strain will be relieved from the hinge, should pressure be applied against the inner faces of the sections.
What is claimed is.
The combination with movable sections, of a hinge comprising a substantially triangular shaped plate having bendable extensions projecting from the wider end thereof and bent about one of said sections and provided with inturned extremities embedded in one of said sections, a substan- In testimony whereof I afliX my signature =tially U-shaped reinforcing plate Secured to in presence of two Witnesses.
