Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed. September 6, 1911. Serial No. 647,868.
To all whom it may concern:
"to it known that .i Limos FERENOZY, a subject of the King of a1 ry, residing at E iton, in the county of orthampton and iitate of Pennsylvania, have invented certuin new and. us fill Improvements in En-. velopQiloistencrs. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawing "if his invention relates to envelop moisten-- ers, and has for its object to provide a device of such class in a manner as is hereinafter set forth, including means for efiiciently supplying water to a moistening brush when occasion so requries, so that the adhesive of the envelop can be quickly moistened.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an envelop inoistencr which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, cliicient and convenient in its use, readily set up and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the clainrhereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an envelop moistencr in accordance with this invention with the outlet 'of the water reservoir closed. liig. is an elevation partly in section of the device with the outlet of the water reservoir open. Fig. is a section on line IIIIII looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a relatively long annular receptacle open at its lower end and having its upper end formed with an inwardly extending threaded collar 2 constituting an inlet for the water reservoir 3, the latterbein formed by the receptacle 1. The inlet, whicli is indicated by the reference character at, is closed through the mediunr of a hollow threaded plug 5 which engages with the threads of the collarQ. Intel-posed between the lower end of the plug 5 and the bottom oi"- the collar 2 1s a resilient. washer 6 which forms a closed joint at the lnner terminus of the plug 5 with respect to the lnner terminus of the collar. The lower end of the receptacle 1 has its wall formed with a series of threads 7 for a purpose to be presently referred to.
Connected to the lower end of the body portion 1 in a manner to loe presently referred to, is an inverted conical-shape container 8, in-which is arranged a sponge 9. The container 8 at its lower end is formed with a depending nipple 10 in which extends the upper end of a moisture applying brush 11. The top of the container 8 is formed of two parallel spaced disks 12 which are integral with the inner face of the body of the container and each of which has-a centrally disposed opening 13 constitutinga water outlet for the reservoir 3. Formed in tegral with and projecting upwardly from the upper disks 12 is a threaded collar 14 engaging with the threads 7 of the body portion 1 for coupling the container with said body portion and for further positioningthe disks 12' so that they will form the bo'ttom of the reservoir 3. The openings 13 are closed through the medium of a slide 15 which is interposed between the disks l2 and extends through a slit 16 formed near the top of the container 8. The slide 15 at its outer end carries a thumb piece 17 to permit of the shifting of the slide to open and close the openings 13.
\Vater is supplied from the reservoir 3 to the sponge 9 when the slide 15 is shifted outwardly to open the outlet of the reservoir 3 and after sufiicicnt water has been supplied to the sponge 9 the slide 15 is shifted inwardly to close the outlet. The brush 11 takes up the water from the sponge t) and applies the same to the adhesive upon the envelop. The body portion 1 not only constitutes a reservoir for the water 18, but
also provides a handle for the operator when "using the molsteinng device.
The plug 5 has its periphery knurled as at 19 to facilitate the convenient removal and replacing of the plug when occasion so requires.
What I claim is.---
An envelop moistener comprising a re ceptacle constituting a water reservoir and a handle, a container provided at one end with an outlet and at its upper end with a top formed with a valve chamber, means projecting from the container and engaging with the lower end of said receptacle for connecting the container to the receptacle, the
top of said container provided with openings for establishing communication between the-reservoir and the interior of the container, said container adapted to hold an absorbent body, the top of said container constituting the bottom for said reservoir, 2. brushsm'ounted in and projecting from the outlet to said container, and a valve arranged in said chamber for normally closing said openings and capable of being 10 shifted to establish communication between the container and the reservoir.-
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
