FIG. 1'
FIG. 3
wnwzssss ATTORNEYS ALBERT G. THOMAS, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA. w 1
NEEDLE-VALVE FOR, GAs-B RNERs.
v Specification of Letters Yatent." v Patent ed luay 2 8, 1912 Application filed l'anuary 1 5, 1912.v swam. 671,178.
To all whom/it may concern: i
Be .it known that 'I, ALBERT G; THOMAS,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of AL legheny and State of Pennsylvaniznhave 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Valves for Gas-Burners, of
'. which the following is a specification, referlocated directly within ence being had therein to the accompanying drawin This invention relates to needle valves for gas burners, and the rimary object of" my lnvention is to furnis a gas "valve with a needle pointthat is arranged exteriorly of the same to avoid leakage of gasthat has heretofore occurred by a needle point being the burner.
Another object of this invent-ion is to provide a gas valve with a valvular member that is located to one side of vthe main gas passage of the valve, said member being operated by a stem that is removed to a point out of communication with the main gas passage of the valveto avoid leakage, the parts to the valve being more readily assembled and with a greater degree of accu' racy.
accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable and highl efiicient for thepurposes for which it is intended.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides-in the novel construe tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. v I r Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of agasvalve in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a: vertical sectional view of the valve, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the detached valvular member. v
r The reference numeral 1 denotes a cylindrical valve body having the lower end thereof provided with a socket 2, said sockethaving the walls thereof screw threaded to receive the exteriorly screw threaded end of a gas supplypipe (not shown). The upper end of the body 1 has a collar 3 and an exteriorly screw threaded nipple 4. The valve body 1 has a longitudinal central bore 5 in communication with the socket'2 and A further object of this invention is to in communication with a tapering 0r needle port-6.
The nipple and the valve body '1, to one side of the.bore 5 are provided wit-h a long t-udinalrecess 7 having one end thereof closed and the opposite end open at the end of the nipple 4. The recess 7 is in communlcation with the transverse opening 8 formed in the collar 3, for a'purpose that will presently appear.
Movably mounted in the recess 7 is a valvular thereof provided with an inverted hookshaped needle point 10 adapted to enter the port 6 and control through said port.
valvular member 9 is provided with the passage of gas The inner end of'the a transverse groove 12.
Loosely engaging in-the groove-12 is an eccentrically-disposed lug 13 carried by the inner end of-a stem 14' that is revolublv mounted within the opening 8. The stem 14' has two spaced apart collars l5 and 16,
the former being seated in the collar 3.
Engaging the stem 14 between the collars 15 and 16 are the confronting ends of straps 17 secured to the collar 3 by screws 18 or other fastening means, said straps constituting means for retaining the stem 14 in engagement with the valve body 1. The outer end of the stem has a knurled wheel or handle .19 by which the stem is adjusted.
The cutaway port-ion 11 of the valvular member 9 provides clearance for the inner end of the stem 14 and as said stem is rotated the valvular member 9 and hooked shaped metal point 10 are raised and lowered, consequently the supply of gas through the. port 6 can be regulated from above and outside of the gas passage.
Thearrangement of the valvular member 9 and the stem 14 does not weaken the construction of the valve body 1 and by not tapping into the bore 5, there is no liability of loss of gas due to a loose stem. This is an important advantage of my invention. over the present type of needle valves, and while I have herein illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications which will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is A regulating valve for gas burners com- .member 9 having the outer end cut away, as at 11 and prising a valve body capable of com'muniat right angles with respect to said recess eating at one end with a as supplyiplpe and extending into said memberfor vertiand having its other end ormed with an cally moving it to adjust the valve. outlet port, said valve body provided -with Intestimony whereof I afiix my signature 5 a lrlecess inlgllepenldentf of sald kiort', ai1 vertiin the presence of two witnesses.
ca y mova e va ve or oontro ing t e passage of gas through said port, a vertically LB A movable actuating member mounted in said Witnesses:
recess and carrying saidfva-lve and capable 'MAX H. SRonovI'rz,
10 of adjusting-the latter, and means disposed CHRISTINA T. Hoon.
