sarnrrfvanvn For.' eass'rovns Specification of Letters Patent. l PatentedlDe, 15, 1914:.
Application led May 11, 1914. `Serial I\Io.v837i,732.` i .f
' To all whom/t may concern,
f Be it known that l, LoUIsKivnzEK, a citi- .zen ofthe United States, and residing at l/Voodhaven, Long Island, lin` the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and'A `useful Improve ments in SafetyValves for Gras-Stoves, of which the following is afspeciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to-male anduse the saine. A n
T his invention relates to safety valves forgas stoves, rangesfaiidfthe like, and the object thereoflis to provide an improved device of this class which will prevent theL accidental-turning on of thel gas when the burner or burners are not ignited;A a further object being to prevent the; *accidental turningofl of the gas wlienfign'ited, and with these and other objects `in view the invention consists of a device of the class specified, constructed and operating as herein described.
The invention is fully disclosed inthe following specification, of which the"` accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement 'are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved valve; Fig. 2 a plan view thereof;
and, Figs. 3, t, and 5 diagrammatic sece 'tional views of the valve and showing it 1n different positions.
In the drawing forming part' of this specification, I have shown at a a gas supply pipe such as is usually employed in connection with gas stoves or ranges and with which, in practice, a number of valve devices, one for each burner of the stove or range, are employed, the valve device shown comprises a valve body Z? having the usual transverse bore b2 and provided on one side with a threaded coupling neck b3 and on the opposite side with a coupling neck beL having an interior thread and with which the pipe c which leads to the burner is connected;`
Mounted verticallyin and passing through the valve body ZJ is a valve plug d, the end "of which that passes `through the valve body Z) being tapered asshown at d2, and said valve plug is provided with a transverse bore Z3 which corresponds with the bore Z22 in the valve body.
The top surface of the valve body Z) is providedin the opposite sides thereof with radial recesses b5; and in the front side porf tionof said body` and in the top surface l thereof, is a wideradial recess Z2, the oppo, site side walls of which Aare preferably beve eled outwardly as shown at 67.'. The front side of the valveplug cl, orthat side Ithereof in the direction of the stove orrange, is provided withl a-longitudinal 'groove vor freycess d4, and .mounted therein isa vertically movable lockbarv e andthe body, portion of said'valve plug, above ,the valve body ZJ, is inclosed by a tubular casing f which holds thelock bar e in position, and said lock bar is provided at its lower end with a forwardly directed" nge'r piece e2 having a nose eS adapted to enter the recesses b5 and bs.
The tubular casing f vwhich incloses the body of the valve plug d, in the construction shown, is formed into an elbow f2 with which is connected a handler] having a central longitudinal bore gjandpivoted in said bore kg2 at g3is a lever g4, the `front end of which enters a recess g5 in the top end of the lock bar e, and'I also provide` a press n button 1t having a vshank 7a2 which passes loosely through the top ofthe handle g and is screwed into or otherwise connected with the outer end of theI lever git, and a spring is placed between the front end ,portion of said lever and the top wall of the bore g2 yin the handle g, and said spring operatesthrough thev lever g4 to hold the lock bar e in operative position.
kWhen the nose ve3 of the lock bar e is in the recess b the valve plug may be manipui lated by the handle g so as to fully open the valve as shown in Fig. 3, or it may bey turned in either direction so as to partly open it as shown in Fig. 4:, in which position a small pilot flame may be maintained at all times, and the valve may be turned so as to permit of a full fiowofgas to thek burner whenever desired.k In order to cut ofi1 the fiow of gas entirely the valve may be turned so that the nose e3 of the lock bar e will enter either of the recesses b5, and this position of the valveis shown in Fig. y5. rllhe recess 'b extends through an arc, approximately, of 60 degrees, and in order to turn `the valve freelyin either direction beyond the limits of the recess the press button h must be forced inwardly so as to withdraw the nose piece e3 ofthe bar c and 'lio permit of the free turning of the valve plug.
understood, prevents the accidental turning of the valve so as to permit of a How of gas when the burner is not ignited.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A valve device of the class described comprisinga valve body having a central bore, i
the top surface of which is provided in the Copies o! this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 8th day of May 1914.
