1 FIG. 2
J E 2; 11 11 15 1:; 5 I] 17 will E """Ww wil INVENTOR L awrenca l [anak WITNESSES ATTORNEYS WED STTES LAWRENCE MANEK, OF WINIPANK, CONNECTICUT.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE MANEK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Vinipank, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had there in to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to that type of hand wrench commonly styled a bicycle wrench.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a quick acting bicycle wrench that has a swiveled nut holder that permits of the nut being swung out of engagement with the shank of the wrench, whereby the adjustable jaw thereof can be shifted longitudinally of the shank.
A further object of this invention is to furnish a wrench of the above type with a swiveled nut holder and novel means for retaining the nut holder in a closed position with the nut in engagement with the shank of the wrench.
The above objects are attained by a me chanical construction that is durable, simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, showing the nut holder in a closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the nut holder in an open position, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of the adjustable jaw of the wrench.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a flat shank that is rectangular in cross section, said shank having the front side thereof provided with transverse teeth 2 and the outer end thereof with a right angular extension that serves as a fixed jaw 3. Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a case 4 having the outer end thereof provided with a jaw 5 confronting the fixed jaw 3 of the shank 1. The inner end of the case has an extension 6 in a plane in parallelism with the jaw 5. The extension 6 is provided with an opening 7 and extending through said opening is a screw rod 8 that is screwed into Specification of Letters Patent.

the threaded socket 9 provided therefor in the jaw 5. Pivotally mounted upon the screw 8 is a nut holder 10 having parallel arms 11. Mounted in the arms 11 is a pivot pin 12 for a spiral nut 13 adapted to mesh with the teeth 2 of the shank, when the holder 10 is in a closed position as shown in Fig. 1.
To retain the nut holder 10 in a closed position, the extension 6 of the case 4 is provided with a spring supported latch or detent in the form of a pin 14 having a head 15 and a flat finger piece 16. Engaging the under side of the head 15 is the end of a flat spring 17 said spring being secured to the extension 6 by a screw 18 or other fastening means. The pin 14 extends through an opening 19 provided therefor in the extension 6, said pin extending into a socket 20 in the arm 11 of the holder 10. This latch or detent firmly holds the holder 10 in a closed position and prevents the holder 10 from assuming a closed position until the latch or detent is lowered.
The inner end of the shank is provided with a screw or protuberance 21 that prevents the case 4 fro-m sliding 011' of the shank 1.
The wrench in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal and of various sizes.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a toothed shank, a yoke-shaped case slidably mounted thereon and having the sides thereof terminating inwardly with respect to the teeth of the shank, a laterally extending jaw integral with and projecting from the outer portion of the sides of the case, a narrow lateral extension projecting from the inner portion of the sides of the case and of less length than the length of said jaw, a rod extending through the free terminus of said extension and secured in the inner face of said jaw, a nut-holder arranged between said aw and extension and pivotally mounted at one side of its center to provide a recess and a pair of arms, a pin fixedly secured in the outer ends of the arms of the nut-holder, a spiral nut concentrically mounted upon said pin within said recess and capable of engaging the teeth of the shank when the nut-holder is swung inwardly thereby maintaining the case in an adjusted position, the inner arm In testimony whereof I affix my signature of said nut-holder provided With a socket, in the presence of two Witnesses.
and a spring controlled detent carried by said extension and projecting through the A C MANEK' latter and capable of engaging in said socket Witnesses: for maintaining the nut-holder in closed p0 ELEANOR JOHNSON, sition. E. M. LOCKWOOD.
