Specification of Letters Patent.
ful Box, of which the following is a speci! fication.k l My invention consists of a paper or other box in which provision is made for, the con- V tents of the box in good land marketable condition, the essential feature of the inven- 'tion comprising a plate or ledge of novel.
construction on which said contents are rested, and a plurality of supports for said ledge, said supports being composed of a cord which is doubled fon itself and formed into an endless loop lengths of which pass under said ledge and then through the sides of the body of the box, the opposite terminals of the loop outside of the body then being tightened over the lid of the box, and the cord knotted, the kno-t being located under a tongue on said lid so as to be lowered below the upper surface of the lid' avoiding a bulge on said surface, said tongue being controlled and covered with said knot'by a seal, all serving to prove the intact condition of the box at its place of reception or delivery, while the lid is firmly held in position on the body of the box and prevented from improper opening. When the box is opened, the loop remains a fixture of the same and so is adapted to be reused, the knot and` said tongue not having been injured or destroyed by said seal, so that another knot inay be formed on the length H and a fresh seal applied and secured to the portion of the box outside the opening formed by said tongue while again freely covering the latter and the knot beneath the same without applying the adhesive material of the seal to the knot.
The invention is satisfactorily'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific ar-' rangement and organizationshown and de- Vscribed.
Figure l represents a perspective View of.
cord employed. Figs. 5 and 6 represent perspective views of portions of the lid of the box showing the tongue employed in different positions. Fig. 7 4represents a perspective view of the ledge employed.
ySimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :-A designates thebody of apaper box, and B'designatesl the lid thereof, said parts excepting the features of my invention applied thereto being of ordinaryv construction. Within the body,
Vis the plate or ledge C on which the goods o-rcontents of the box are rested, said ledge being preferably card or paste board or other pliable but sufficiently strong material.
Patented May 28,1912. Applicationled July 6, 1911. i `Serial No. 637,124.
Under'said ledge are placed two lengths D. Y
D. of'an endlessloop 'of cord, the same passing upwardly from the sides thereof and then out of the body A through the openings E. E., converging over the sides and top of the lid forming the loops J, K which are on opposite sides of the lid. The two lengths of cord in primary condition form the loop G, its ends being united by the knot F, as shown in Fig. 4L. The converged end of the loop J is united by said knot F, shown also in Fig. l, and has a length H of cord continuous of the loop, the same 'extending transversely across the top of the lid and is passed through the opposite converged end of the loop K and twined back therefromY on itself forming the supplemental loopL f which is drawn up and tightened and so tightens said loops and cord within the body.
The loop L is secured by the knot M thus holding the piece of cord tightly on the box while the ledge C is held up in a plurality of places and so prevented from bulging downwardly and thereby keeps the goods imposed thereon firm against the inner side of the lid of the box and prevents shifting and mussing of the same.
In order to prevent the knot M from bulging upwardly and forming an irregular surface on the top of the lid, I form on said top the hinged tongue N, which is punched out from the material of said top and adapted to be raised, as in Fig. 6. Then the knot M and an adjacent portion of the piece of cord is passed under said tongue and the latterV closed down when the knot is depressed and occupies a position below the tongue and the latter occupies the opening from which said tongue is cut or punched out. In order to prevent rising of said tongue, I apply thereover the seal P which is secured by adhesive material to the portion of the top of the lid, around said tongue, thus covering said tongue and rendering it comparatively immovable in upward or outward direction.
Vhen the seal is broken the knot h/I is accessible and the same may be opened, thus loosening the piece of cord, and separating the loops J. K. and length H thereof, when the lid may be raised and the contents of the boX are accessible the same being found in admirable and marketable condition in which they were originally packed.
Uien the cord is applied primarily to the boX and passed through the openings E, and the knot F is formed, the resultant loops J. K. prevent the cord from being drawn out or removed improperly from the box in either direction and so under ordinary circumstances, the cord remains a fixture of the boX ready for subsequent re-use.
The tray C is formed of a piece of material having its side end portions upturned and downturned producing the grooves or inverted V-shaped sides Q, the top bands of which are reinforced by pieces R of suitable iibrous material secured thereon.
The walls of the grooves or inverted V- shaped sides Q are pliable or' flexible and so are adapted to be fitted on the top edges of the body of the boX whereby the ledge is suspended in position and admits of the lid being placed over said walls, thus retaining the latter in position on the body while the ledge proper acts as a transverse brace to prevent eollapsion of the body of the box, then the two legths D of the cord serve to balance the tray and cause uniform upward pressure thereon from below preventing distortion of the tray when said cord is tightened, and thus the tray will be held flat against the underside of the contents of the boX.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a boX, a plurality of openings in the sides thereof, and a pliable tongue integral with the lid thereof, and an endless loop of cord partly in the boX, passed partly through said openings and partly outside of the box, the outside portions converging toward each other, said portions being adapted to be drawn together and connected by a knot, the latter being adapted to be passed under said tongue and covered by the saine, leaving the tongue flush with the adjacent portions of the lid.
