Description

ltnttd tant anni tylylta Letters Paton-t No. 102,746, dated M 'ay 3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N UMBRELLAS.
'l'he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parte! the same To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON W. YOUNG, of lthe City and county of Providence, in the State of-Rbode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvemeut in Umbrellas.
My invention consists in so constructing the iame and the cover that the two may be readily and easily disconnected, or put together for use; and I do bereby -declare that the following specitication, taken in connection with the drawing furnished and.l forrnngr apart of the same, is a true, clear, and exact description thereof.
. The drawing referred to represents in perspective the frame of one of my improved parasols.
A is the handle or stick. The bows are marked B and are attached to the A handle, and operated by stems or braces and a slidingr ferrule inthe usual manner the ends of the bows are tted to enter a socket, marked C, attached to the-ends of the extension bows, 4marked D.
These extension bows are secured to the fabric form ing the cover. In the center of the'cover is secured, in an obvious manner, a fel-rule or thimble, markedE, which, when tit-ted to slide down from the tipped end of the handle, rests upon the inner ends of the bows, or upon the. ring to which they are attached.
It is obvious that, to place a cover upon a frame, it is only necessary to pass the ferrule or thimble E overthe tip of the. handle, and then insert the ends of the bows into the `sockets ony the ends of the extension bows.
By means of my invention it is practicable to have for each frame, a variety of covers (provided with extension bows) of different ,styles and colors, in order that a lady. may suit her present fancy, or'match such other articles of dress as may be worn at the time of its use; or, if it should be desirable, a cover of large size and of a suitable fabric could be readily attached, and thus convert a parasol into a sun-umbrella, or one for protection against rain.
A desirable degree of tension to the fabric is readily obtained by having suitable expansion springs in the sockets, or between the thimble E and the bows, as.
shtnvninA the drawing marked F.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent The improvement in umbrellas herein described, which consists in the combination of the thimble E,
tension-spring F, and extension bows D, with a suit-A able li'ame work and cover, for the purposes specified.
SOLOMON W.\YOUNG.
