Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed May 20, 1908. Serial No. 433,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OAMILLO SIsMONDI, lawyer, residing in Turin, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improve me-nts in Lead Seals, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a lead seal to hold the ends of a wire or cord which closes the mouth of a sack or similar device and in which there is no danger of sliding of the wire or cord after the compression of the seal. This result is obtained without making more difficult the manufacture of the seals actually employed and the present seal may be muchmore easily applied than those now in common use so that a loss of time is avoided.
In the drawings,Figure 1 shows a sectional view of a lead seal with the wire or cord; Fig. 2 shows the seal applied to a sack and before its compression; Fig. 8 shows the seal applied to a sack and compressedgFig. 4: shows the seal applied to a sack provided with a plate bearing an address; Fig. 5 is a face view of the tag or address plate.
The seal 1 which may however assume any suitable form is strongly attached to the end 2 of a wire or cord by means of a knot 3 which is formed on the end of the wire and then embedded in the seal so that it is impossible to pull the end of the wire out of the seal. The seal isprovided with two non-communicating passages at right angles to each other, a and 5, each having a cylindrical form and the passage 4 being in the rear of the passage 5 and separated therefrom by a wall of metal as is indicated by its showing in dotted lines. The hole 5 however has two different diameters. The wire 6 enters the hole 4 then the hole 5 at the inner smaller end of the hole. The wire passes around the mouth of the sack to be sealed so that on pulling the ends of the wire the seal comes very near to the sack. Then a knot 7 is made in the wire 6 very near the seal 1, then, pulling therseal outward, the
knot 7 enters the outer larger end of the hole 5, then the seal is compressed and thus the outer end of the wire 6 is also pressed in the seal in a strong manner so as to grip the knot 7 To increase the adherence of V the lead sealto the wire it may be useful to provide the holes 4 and 5 with two metallic coils 8 which upon compressing the seal enter the lead and so prevent any sliding of the wire or cord. Before the wire is disposed around the mouth of the sack it can be entered in the hole 9 of the plate 10' bearing the address or any other indication, thus obtaining the result that the plate cannot be taken away because of the seal 1 being larger than the hole 9.
While I have shown in detail one form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as various changes can be made therein without departing from the invention.
What I claim is r 1. A metal seal having one end of a flexible member embedded therein and having in addition to the space occupied by said end two non-communicating passages separated from each other by a wall of metal and through which the bight and the other end respectively of said flexible member are passed whereby a double open loop may be formed in the flexible member, with the ends of each loop embedded in the seal.
