Description

llnitrd' what @wat @More Letters Patent No. 102,736, dated May 3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-CUTTERS.
The Schedule referred. to in these IJetters Patent and making partof the same To all whom Muay concern:
Be it known that l, COLUMBUS M. WEATHERS, f Rocheport, in the county of Boone and in the State ot' Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvements in St1'aw-Cutters; and doherebyi declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles ot' my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I elaimand desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to machines forcutting straw; and consists in certain modifications in the details of the same, by means of which a slide is made to travel automatically to and fro within the feed-box.
In the accompanying platev of drawings, which illustrato my invention and form apart of the specification thereof', and in which Vcorresponding parts are represented by similar lettersv Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine for cutting straw, with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is la pla-n of the same.
lhe construction of my limprovement is as follows:
In the drawings above mentioned- A represents the frame of the machine.
B, the c11tter-\vheel, with the knives c attached thereto.
Dvdenotesthe feed-box. y
E, the shaft, to one end of which the said cutterwheel is attached.
The said shaft has its bearings in the projecting cross-beams a of the frame, and upon it a worm is cut.
The box Dis provided with the upright slide F, to which is attached the weight G,'by means of the strap H.
Y To the said ,'slide, and at right angles, is also attached the horizontal bar I, of such a length that the end thereof will rest upon the screw-shaft E.
A rod, K, is secured to the frame A, lead in a di- -an elbow, L.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The wheel B beingrevolved,in the ordinary manner, Y
at right angles to theA mouth of the box, the screwshaft E is rotated, and imparts rectilinear motion to lthe traveling slide F, by means of the horizontal rod I, which is held within the thread or groove of the screw-shaft by the rod L, causing'the vsaid slide to push the straw toward the mouth of the box. When ,t
the slide F has arrived at or near the lnouthjof the box, the rod I passes beyond the end of the guide-bar K, and, releasing itself from the thread upon the shaft, is, together with the slide, 86o., forced back un- I til it catches within the elbow L, and rests, as before, in the groove or thread of the screw-shaft, by which it is again- 'carried forward.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will yindicate what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clauses: l
`1: In combination with the screw-shaft, the upright slide, with itsborizontal bar and weight, as described.
2. In combination withA the screw-shaft E, the rod L,fwhen constructed to operate 'as described.
3. The combination and arrangement of thefrod L, rod I, and screw-shaft E, when constructed to operate as described.
4. The combination' and arrangement of the box D, slide F, strap H, weight G, and rod I, when constructed to operate as described. v
In testimony that'I claim.the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand'this 1st day'of November, 1869.-
' COLUMBUS M. WEATHER-S.
