Description
C'lnitd tant- PHILIP F. VANEVEREN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 102,733, elated May 3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-COVER PROTECTORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of 'che same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, IHrLIP F. VAN EVEREN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Booli=00\'e1s; and I do hereby dec-lare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beingdlad to the accompanying drawii'igs and to the letters ot' rearencernarked thereon.
My invent-ion consists ot' a book-cover ina-de in four parts, fitting the four corners of' a hound volume, said parts -being adjustable in relation to each other, as they are pnt on the book, so as to fit hooks of differ# ent sizes.
In the accompanying drawings- Fignre l is a perspective view of a book with my.
:over attached.
Figure 2 is a view of the inside of the four cornerpieces before they are put on the book.
Figure 3 is a section of a hook with in v cover on the saine.
Figure 4 is adetached view of one corner-piece.
rlhe object of my invention-is to supply schools, libraries, and boek-users generally, with a cheap, convenient, and neat book-cover, already ont, gulnined, folded,
and in part sealed, so that one person may covermore than a'thonsand volumes in a day with a comparatively dui'able cover that will always keep its place. This cover may be made and sold like envelopes, the four corner-pieces being folded and their folds` sealed down, as seen in Iig. 2, ready to be slipped upon the corners of the cover oi' a bound volume or other book.
These corners ina-y be out in the form shown in g.
4, the main part .l5 having'two flaps A and C, which should be gummed, so as to be self-sealing; and I prefer to seal down these flaps, as seen in fig. 2.
Also`t\vo of these corna-irs, say the two lower ones, Nos. 2 and 4, should be gnn'nned at D', in order to attach -these pieces to the pieces Nos. l and 3, as seen in fig. 2'; and the twopeces 3 andl shouldgllso be gumrned along the mai-gin D, adjoining the pieces- 1 and i, thus making the four parts self-sealing upon each other.'
In applying these corner-pieces to a book, the pieces 1 and 2 may overlap cach opt-hermore or less, according to the'size of the book, and also the pieces l and 3 may overlap at the back of the book, more or less, to make the parts lit;` and the other pieces are adiusted to the book in like manner.
My improved cover may be ont by machinery, the four corner pieces gnmmed, and their aps folded down, and thus put in the market, like envelopes.
My improved covcrmay be made of paper, cloth, or any vsuitable material, and of different sizes. And this cover may have a slated surface or a silicate surface, as seen in Nos. 3 and 4, iig. 2, for memoranda.
Having thus described my' invention,
I claim the abovefdescribed sectional cover, made in 'onr parts, adjustable in relation t-oeach other, substantially as set forth.
PHILIP ll. VAN EVEREN,A
