RAIL-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed December 16,1911. Serial No. 666,119.
To allwhom it may concern;
Beit known that I, SAMUEL D. STEEL, a citizen of` the United States, residlng at IVoodla'wn, in the county of Beaver and' `State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Clamps, of which the following is a'specication.
The present invention -relates to clamps for rails.
Incarrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a4 clamp comprisinga pair of elements arranged adjacent the opposite faces of the rails and contacting with the head of theirail aswell as the base flanges.
thereof, thesaid clamps being secured together in an effective and novel manner which will prevent the displacement of the clamps even after the securing elements have been removed.
I also aim to provide a clamp of this char,
acter which may be secured towooden, plastic or metallicwrails, which comprises few parts and which will effectively sustain the rails against lateral or downward movement.
With the above objectsand others of a similar nature in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of 'parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. g
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation illustrating my improvement applied to a rail. Fig. 2 is atop `plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Fig.- 2. Fig. 4 is a. perspective view `of one of the clamps. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the plate. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the bolt. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of one of the locking blocks. Fig. 8 is an elevation of one of the retaining rings. Fig.`
9 is a view of one of the pins. Fig. 10 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the application of my improvement upon the ordinary angular fish plates.
Referring now to the drawings i ndetail, the numeral 1 designates atie for railway rails. -This tie may he constructed of plastic materiah or wood or of iron, and the numeral 2desiguates what I term a tie plate, whichA may be formed with o1' which may be secured to the upper face of the tie 1 in any desired manner. rlhe plate is centrally formed adjacent its oppositeedges with spacedl elongated vslots 3 and the plate is further provided adjacent the walls formed by the said slots 3, withdepressions or open- The numeral 5 designatesa bolt. This bolt comprises a horizontal body-portion (i,r
and annular arms 7. The body 6 is arranged below the plate 2, and the arms .7 project through the elongated openings 3 thereof.
The numeral 8 designates the clamps. One of these clamps is arranged. upon each of the opposite faces of each of the rails, 'but as all of the clamps are of'siinilar conundercut to provide the angular wall' 10,
the same being of a shape conforming to 4the cross sectional contour of the base iange of the rail 11. The upper face of the base 9 isycentrally provided with a rib 12, the inner face of which-being vertically straight, this rib e'xtends entirely across the plate 8,
and is centrally formed with an up-l .standing lug 13.
The lug 13, has` its inner face `vertically straight and is adapted to engage with the web upon one of the faces of the rail 11 while the top of the said lug is slightly inclined or beveled as at 14 so that the same will engage beneath the ball of the rail 11. The body 9 of the clamp 8 is'centrally formed with an angular slot 15, the said slot is adapted toy receive the angular extending portions 7 of thel bolt 5. The body portion 9 of the member 8 is also formed with openings 16, whichy are adapted toregister with the vopenings .4 of the tie platevQ, and communicating with these openings and arranged at the upper face of the body 9 are the enlarged recessed portions 17. The openings 16 and 3 areadapted to receive a shank 18 and a headed pin 19, and
the head thcreof is adapted to bc'received within the recess 17 so that the pin will remain iush with the top of the body portion 9 when inserted within the openings.
The numeral 20 designates lthe angular locking block. This block is provided 'with a central opening 21, which is adapted to .permit of the block beingpassed overthe extending arms y7 of the bolt 5. The block when properly positioned tightly engages with the vertical faccof the-rib l2, and
j permits of the inscrtionof a nut 22 upon one sure between the block and the nut toprevent accidental removal of the nut from the .bolt due to the vibration incident to the rolling stock passing over the track 11.
It is here to be stated that the bolt 5 is constructed ot' some bendable material and from the above description taken in connection with' the accompanying drawings it will be readily noted that even should the nuts 22 be removed from the bolt the angular locking blocks, being retained upon the angular arms of the bolt 5, will prevent the displacement of the parts and effectively sustain the rail upon the tie 1.
It will be furthernoted by reference to figures of the drawings that the spring. member 23 which I have termed a washer, is in reality more of a keeper when a pair of bolts 5 are employed as might be deemed necessary .when the clamps are employed upon T ties.
In Fig. 10 I have illustrated the device in connection with ordinary angular fish plates. These fish plates 26, are connected through the medium of the usual bolt 27 and the nut 28. The clampin elements are provided with longitudinal y extending upturned portions or beads 25, and the tie 29, in this instanceis illustrated as hollow. The sustaining elements are substantially similar to the device previously described.
ing with the ball 'and' we of the rail, a olt Y carried by the tie, said bolt havingo positely disposed angular arms exten 'g *i through the body of the clamp,' wedge shaped locking blocks engagingthe pro- ;jecting portions of the bolt and adapted to contact with the ribs of the clamp, and nuts for the bolts. l
2. In combination with a tie, of a rail upon the tie, a bolt member comprising a body and an ular threaded ends,a clamp having angu ar openings ,and adapted to engage the angular vportions of the bolt, said clamp havi transversely arranged ribs, V-shaped loc 'ngblocks -contacting the upper 4face of the tie, and the ribs, and a nut engaging the angular extensions of the bolt to compress the locking blocks against the ribs and against the clamp.'
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature" in presence of two witnesses.
Y SAMUEL D. STEEL.
