GUARD-RAIL CLAMP.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SWENEY MUNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fowler, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Guard-Rail Clamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved guard rail clamp, arrangedto permit ofconveniently placing it in position on a traiiic rail and its guard rail, and to allow of fastening it in place without weakening the web of the traliic rail for the passage of bolts or other fasten ing devices. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a rail clamp, having a base for the traffic rail and guard rail to rest on, and an integral clamping arm extending from one end of the clamp and engaging the outer side of the guard rail, a brace secured to the said clamp base and engaging the outer side of the traffic rail, a filler block tting between the said rails, and transverse bolts for fastening the filler block to the guard rail.

The bases of the traiiic rail A and the guard rail B rest on the base member C of a guard rail clamp C provided with an upwardly-extending arm C2 fitting onto the outer side of the guard rail B, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 3. The base member C of the guard rail clamp C is provided with a shoulderC3 fitting against the outer edge of the base of the traffic rail A, so that when the guard rail clamp C is in position on the traffic rail A and the guard rail B then the said rails are held against lateral movement on the base member C of theV guard rail `clamp C. the said brace D being fastened/by bolts E to the outer end C4 of the guard rail clamp C. The brace D is provided with a depending tapering pin D passing through a correspondingly shaped opening C5 in the outer end C4 of the guard rail clamp C, and the lower end of the tapering pin D is provided with an opening D2 into which is driven a key F abutting against the under side of the base member C of the guard rail clamp C 'so as to securely fasten the brace D in place on the guard rail clamp in addition to the bolts E previously mentioned, and at the Vsame time the taper of the pin D forces the brace D inward in rm contact with the outerside of the traffic rail A.V
Between the traffic rail A and the guardV vagainst the opposite faces of the webs ofthe rails A and B, against the under side of the inner portions of the rail heads and onto the top ofthe inner portions of the bases of the said rails, so that .the rails A and B are held properly spaced apart. Transversely-ex tending bolts II pass through the filler block G and through bolt holes in the web of the guard rail B, and also through washers G held against the Outer face of the web of the guard railB and fitting against the under side of the outer portion of the guard rail yhead and also onto the top portion of the base ofthe said guard rail B. The washers G are arranged on opposite sides of the arm C2 so that the filler block Gr is held against lengthwise movementrelative to the rails A and B.
On the top of the ller block G is secured a foot guard I of heavy sheet metalor other suitable material, and extending beyond theV ller block G a desired distance between the rails A and B, the end I being turned downward, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the foot guard serving to prevent the heels of switchmen or other persons from being caught between the rails A and B. A screw J or other fastening means serves to fasten the foot guard I in position on top of the fillerA block G.
Tie plates K extend under the bases of the rails A and B and reston top of the ties L, and each tie plate K is provided in the portions projecting beyond the bases of the rails A and B with apertures K', some of which are in .register with notches B formed in the outer portion of the base of the guard rail B, and through the said tie plate openings K are driven spikes N into the ties L, and some of the spikes pass through corresponding notches B to hold the tie plates in firm relation with the guard rail B and consequently with the traiiic rail A.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described, the main rail A is not weakened by bolt holes for the passage of bolts used to secure the filler block G or other parts in place, and hence the original construction of the traiiic rail is maintained. It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described the guard rail B is not liable to change its position relative to the traiic rail A, so that the guard rail properly serves its intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In combination, a traiiic rail, a guard rail, a guard rail clamp having a base for the said rails to restI on and a clamping arm engaging the outer side of the guard rail, a brace for engaging the outer side of the trafiic rail, the said brace having a depending locking member extending through the clamp base, means for fastening the brace to the clamp base, a filler block fitting between the rails, and means for fastening the said filler block to the guard rail.
2. In combination, a traiic rail, a guard rail, a guard rail clamp having a base for the said rails to rest on and an integral clamping arm engaging the outer side of the guard rail, the said clamp base having a shoulder engaging the outer edge of the base of the traiiic rail, a brace engaging the outer side of the traiiic rail and having a depending locking pin extending through the clamp base, a key engaging the said pin and resting against the under surface of the clamp base, a iiller block fitting between the rails, and transverse bolts for fastening the said ller block and the web of the guard rail together at opposite sides of the cla-mping arm of the guard rail clamp.
3. In combination, a traffic rail, a guard rail, a guard rail clamp having a base for the said rails to rest on and an integral clamping arm engaging the outer side of the guard rail, a brace engaging the outer side of the traiiic rail and having a depending tapering pin engaging a corresponding aperture in t-he rail clamp, bolts for fastening the said brace to the said clamp, and a filler blo-ck between the said rails.
4. In combination, a traiiic rail, a guard rail, a guard rail clamp having a base for the said rails to rest o-n and an integral clamping arm engaging the outer side of the guard rail, a brace engaging the outer side of the traffic rail and having a depending tapering pin engaging a corresponding aperture in the rail clamp, bolts for fastening the said brace to the said clamp, a iller block between the said rails, washers itting the outside of the guard rail on opposite sides of the said clamping arm, and transverse bolts fastening the said filler block, the web of the guard rail and the said washers together.
