Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the back of a base-ball catchers glove,
showing my reinforce applied to the corners of the hand-receiving pocket. Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale of a broken-away portiomof the glove at the lower right cornor of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a broken-away part of the glove at the lower left corner of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the bifurcated patch detached. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section taken on the broken line 55 in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view before the patch is applied. Fig. 1 is drawn on a smaller scale than the other figures.
The principal object of the invention is to stay or reinforce the corners of the handreceiving pocket on the back of a base-ball glove, such as a catehers glove. The usual means for reinforcing the corners of such pockets has been by means of a rivet inserted through the back of the glove and the corner-portion of the pocket, but in such a construction the strain is not well distributed, and the corner of the pocket soon tears itself free under the great strain to which such a device is subjected in use.
In carrying out my invention, I reinforce the corner of the pocket on such a glove by means of a bifurcated patch, one member of which is stitched directly to the back of the glove on the outer side of the cornerportion of the pocket which is flatly dislposied between said member and the glove- Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, represents a base-ball glove such as is commonly worn by catchers, having on the back a pocket, 2, adapted to receive the thumb and several fingers of the wearers hand, the open end of the pocket being provided with a strap, 3, for partly closing the same about the wrist of the wearer. The piece of leather or other material forming the pocket, 2, lies alongits outer edge flatly upon the back of the body of the glove, and is secured by one or more rows of stitching, (3, inserted through said flat-lying edge and the leather or fabric forming the back of the glove. The reinforce for the corners of the pocket is formed by a bifurcated patch, 4, the bifurcation, 5, of which is adapted to receive the wall of the pocket, the body of the patch and one of its arms being adapted to lie flatly upon the back of the glove, while its other arm lies substantially fiat upon the back of the glove and the fiat out turned edge of the pocket as shown in Fig. 5. As so placed, the patch is securely attached by means of one or more rows of stitching 7. The out turned edge of the pocket is thus held flatly between the back of the glove and the patch, and is doubly stitched to the back of the glove as well'as stitched to the patch, as shown in Fig. 5. The corner of the pocket is thus heavily reinforced and well adapted to withstand the strains which tend to tear it loose in the use of the glove. The patch is stitched along its entire edge to the back of the glove, tending to reinforce and stiffen not only the corner of the pocket but the back portion of the glove in the vicinity thereof.
