Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. FELLMAN, OF SELLERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPRovED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,672, dated May 3, 1870.
I, BENJAMrN F. FELLMAN, of Sellersville, county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Nfmwc and Object of the Intention.
])escr/pton of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved washin g-niachine, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
General Description.
The stationary portion of the machine consists of a box or vessel, A, supported at the corners by posts or legs B B and B B', and
Ahaving arranged within it a ribbed and perforated or other suitable rubbing-bed, C. The movable rubber F consists of an arm, a, and of a frame, b, secured to the same, the latter being adapted to the interior of the box A, and being ribbed and perforated or otherwise roughcned on its under side, to correspond to the surface of the rubbing-bed C. The arm a is pivo ted at m to arock-spindle, H, which is hung to and arranged to turn freely in the upper ends of the posts B B, so that the said arm,
and consequently the Whole movable rubber, can be vibrated horizontally, and in the arc of a circle, upon the pin w, or can be raised vertically from the rubbing-bed by turning the spindle upon its axis.
In using this machine, the clothes or other articles to be Washed are placed upon the bed C, and a sufficient quantity of soap-suds to cover the said bed is pouredinto the box A. The rubber F is then depressed, and, while held down upon the mass of clothes, is rapidly reciprocated, the pressure being relieved and the position of the mass changed from time to time, so that all portions of the same may be rubbed and cleansed.
The rubber, While being thus reciprocated and forced downward, can yield vertically, so as to accommodate itself` tothe inequalities of the mass of clothes, and thus reach all portions of the same; and when the washing is coinpleted the said rubber can be raised clear of the box, so as to enable the clothes to be removed.
