To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RIGNEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Stops and Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a door stop and holder, and my invention aims-first, to provide a device of the above type that will positively hold a door in an open position, thereby preventing wind or other forces from accident-ally closing the door. Second,
to provide a device of the above type that protects door knobs, keys, and walls from injury due to a door slamming open. Third, to provide a door stop and holder that will prevent furniture from being injured or the glass panel of the door from being broken, or the door not being firmly propped open. Fourth, to provide a door stop and holder that is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install, neat in appearance, and highly etficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
The invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan of the door stop and holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewv of a detached stop and keeper, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of a detached latch.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a wall or other support, and secured to said wall by screws 2 or other fastening means is a stop and keeper, a U-shaped stop 3 having lateral arms 4 which are held in engagement with the wall 1 by screws 2. One of the arms 4 is of a greater length than the other arm and the long arm is provided with a resilient keeper 5, said keeper being curved toward the sides of the stop 3 and having the ends thereof provided with a hook 6 that presents rounded contact surfaces 7 and 8, for a purpose that will presently appear. The hook 6 is in proximity to the outer end of the stop 3 and is spaced fi'om the side of said stop.
The reference numeral 9 denotes the door in an open position and in parallelism relatively to the wall or support.
Secured to the inner side of the door 9 by screws 10 and 11, or other fastening means, is a latch, comprising an L-shaped arm 12 that is secured to the door 9 by the screws 10, the fastened end of said arm constituting a contact plate for the stop 3, as best shown in Fig. 1. The opposite end of the arm 12 terminates in a hook 13 and the lower side of this hook is formed in tegral with an angularly disposed brace 14 that has an apertured lateral lug 15' secured to the door 9 by the screw 11. The bill of the hook 13 presents a rounded or curved surface 16, and said hook cooperates with the hook 6 in retaining the door 9 in an open position. As the door 9 is swung to an open position, the bill 16 of the hook 13 contacts with the curved contact surface 8 of the hook 6 and forces the keeper outwardly away from the side of the stop 3, whereby the hook 13 can pass between the hook 6- and the side of said stop. As the bill 16 of the hook 13 rides over the contact surface 8, the book 13 gradually rides into engagement with the contact surface 7 of the hook 6, the said hook 16 engaging under the hook 13 and retaining the latch in a locked position until the door 9 is manually moved. Then the door 9 is swung to an open position, the door is prevented from contacting with the keeper by the stop 3 engaging the fastened end of the arm 12. In consequence of this arrangement and construction the wall or support 1 cannot be injured by the door 9, or the door 9 injured by contacting with the keeper or the wall 1.
It is thought that the utility of the door, stop and holder will be apparent without further description and while in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A door stop and holder comprising a stop member including a U-shaped body portion adapted to be secured to a support and having one of its legs terminating in a forwardly extending resilient keeper arm formed with a hook-shaped end positioned in proximity to the outer end of said body portion, an arm adapted to be secured to a door and capable of being engaged by said body portion, said arm provided with a hook-shaped end capable of engaging with the hook-shaped end of the keeper when said body abuts against said arm, and an angularly disposed brace adapted to be secured at one end of said arm and formed integral at its other end with the hook-shaped end of the arm whereby the latter is braced when the hook-shaped end thereof rides into and out of engagement with the hook-shaped end of the keeper.
2. A door stop and holder comprising a stop member adapted to be secured to a support and including a body portion and a resilient keeper having a hook-shaped end, said keeper disposed at the side of the body portion, a holder adapted to be secured to a door and comprising an angle-shaped arm having the terminus of one leg thereof provided with a hook capable of engaging the hook of the keeper, and an angle-shaped brace adapted to be secured to the door and formed integral with the hook-shaped end of the arm.
3. A door stop and holder comprising a U-shaped stop member adapted to be secured to a support, a resilient keeper carried by and arranged at one side of said member and having a hook-shaped end, an angle-shaped arm adapted to be secured to the door and having a hook-shaped free end capable of engaging the hook-shaped end of the keeper, and an angle-shaped brace adapted to be secured to'the door and formed integral with the hook-shaped end of said arm, said arm adapted to abut against said member to arrest the movement of the door.
