TED STATES {PATENT APPARATUS FOR BOILING WATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 4, 1911. Serial No. 642,333.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT MACKAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Walthamstow, in the county of Essex, England, have invented new and useful Apparatus for Boiling Water, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in an improvement upon or addition to the heating apparatus shown and described in the specification of my U. S. A. Patent No. 982,733, dated 24th January, 1911, and has for its object to make the apparatus more suitable for delivering large quantities of boiling water.
According to the present invention I employ a boiler heat regulating mechanism and delivery nozzle similar to that described in my said specification, and I combine therewith means for controlling or cutting 011 the supply of cold water to the feed water cistern at the same time that the heating apparatus is brought into operation. The water always flows by gravity from the feed water cistern into the boiler whenever hot water is flowing out of the boiler. This flow from the boiler is not regulated by any cock. The water in the boiler is at the same level as the water in the cistern, which level is regulated by a ball valve. When the heat is turned off and the cold water is turned on, the feed water cistern becomes a condenser. This enables me to dispose of the cock on the delivery nozzle and the waste pipe and its cock shown and described in my said specification.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation to a larger scale of mechanism suitable for controlling the steam or gas for boiling the water and the supply of cold water to the feed water cistern. Fig. 3 is a plan of the cam plate and valve rods shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view of an electric switch to be employed when electricity is used for heating.

Through these tubes pass the small water tubes a which are open at both ends and form a water connection between the shallow boiler a and the outer conical vessel a As shown in Fig. 4 the apparatus is heated by a steam coil 6 and other suitable heating means such as the gas ring 0.

One form of apparatus for controlling the supply of steam and gas for boiling the water and the supply of cold water is shown in' Figs. 2 and 3, although I do not limit my invention to this apparatus as other means may be employed which will act in the same manner.
Z is the controlling handle or lever fixed to a'cam plate 1 mounted on a pivot 2. On the underside of the plate 1 are arranged cams 3 and 4 which, when the cam plate is rotated, depress the rods 5 and 6 and thus turn on the heating apparatus and open the water valve.
As shown in Fig. 2, 5 is a valve stem controlling directly the steam valve 6. This valve stem 5 is prolonged through a stufiing box 7 and'controls the gas valve 0 shown in Fig. l. 8 is a valve controlling the supply of cold water through pipe 10 to the ball valve 11 of the feed water tank 6.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the steam and gas valves are shut off and the water supply valve is open.

water tank 6 is cut 01f as soon as the cam i leaves the valve stem 6 and the steam and gas valves 6 and c are opened as the other end of the cam 41: depresses the valve stem 5. As hot water is forced out of the apparatus by steam pressure the water level drops in the boiler and feed water cistern and the ball valve 11 is therefore opened.
By turning the cam plate 1 still farther in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3 it is possible to leave the steam and gas full on as the cam 4: will retain the valve stem 5 depressed.
The cam 3 is of less depth than the cam 4 and it has a stop 80. When, by this continued turning, the cam 3 comes into action, it depresses the valve stem 6 and partly opens the water valve. By moving the cam 3 on and off the valve stem 6, one is able to reduce the flow of boiling water as the inlet of cold water into the tank 6 through the open ball valve 11 will partly condense the steam therein and thus reduce the steam pressure in the steam dome.
When the cam plate is returned to the position shown in Fig. 3, the steam and gas being cut off the water will cease to boil and the cold water entering the feed water tank through the ball valve 11 will cause the steam in the tank to be condensed, thus reducing the pressure in the steam dome d and boiler a and causing the water to cease flowing through the outlet pipe 9. The feed water cistern 6 and the boiler will then fill up until the ball valve 11 closes.
The rod 5 may be employed to operate a switch 50 and complete an electric circuit 51 for heating the water in the boiler a.
9 is the water supply pipe to the valve 8.
12 is the steam pipe, 13 is the gas pipe and 14 is a platform to support the vessel into which the boiling water is being delivered.
WV hat I claim is 1. In apparatus for boiling water, the combination of a boiler, a steam dome rising from said boiler, water delivery pipe rising from said boiler, heating apparatus for heating the water, generating steam and causing the water to flow through the delivery pipe by steam pressure, a feed water cistern always open to the said dome and boiler, a ball valve supplying said feed water cistern, a cold water supply pipe leading to the ball valve, two rods one governing the heating apparatus and one the flow of cold water to the ball valve, and means for simultaneously turning off the cold water to the cistern and turning on the heating apparatus, and turning off the heating apparatus and turning on the cold water supply to the cistern, substantially as set forth.
2. In apparatus for boiling water, the combination of a shallow boiler, a conical 65 shaped vessel surrounding the shallow boiler,
a number of hollow columns connecting the two. vessels, said columns being open at their bottom and provided with a small vent at their top, water tubes open at both ends passing through said hollow columns, a dome connected to the shallow boiler, a delivery pipe rising from the shallow boiler, heating apparatus for heating the water, generating steam and causing the water to flow by steam pressure, a feed water cistern always open to the said dome and boiler, a ball valve supplying said feed water cistern, a cold water supplypipe leading to the ball valve, two rods one. governing the heating apparatus and one the flow of cold water to the ball valve, and means for turning off the cold water to the cistern and turning on the heating apparatus, and turning off the heating apparatus and turning on the cold water to the cistern, substantially as set forth.
3. In apparatus for boiling water, the combination of a boiler, a steam dome rising from said boiler, water delivery pipe rising from said boiler, heating apparatus for heating th e.water, generating steam and causing the water to flow through the delivery pipe by steam pressure, a feed water cistern always open to the said dome and boiler, a ball valve supplying said feed water cistern, a cold water supply pipe leading to the ball valve, two rods one governing the heating apparatus and one the flow of cold water to the ball valve, and a rotating cam for turning off the cold water to the cistern and turning on the heating apparatus, and turning off the heating apparatus and turning on the cold water to the cistern, substantially-as set forth.
4. In apparatus for boiling water, the combination of a boiler, a steam dome rising from said boiler, water delivery pipe rising from said boiler, heating apparatus for heating the water, generating steam and causing the water to flow through the delivery pipe by steam pressure, a feed water cistern always open to the said dome and boiler, a ball valve supplying said feed water cistern, a cold water supply pipe leading tothe ball valve, tworods one governing the heating apparatus and one the flow of cold water to the ball valve, and a rotating cam plate having two cams thereon one for first turning off the supply of cold water to the cistern and then turning on the heating apparatus and. a second cam which comes into operation for turning on the cold water again while the first mentioned cam retains the heating apparatus in operation, substantially at set forth.
5. In apparatus for boiling water, the combination of a boiler, a steam dome rising from said boiler, water delivery pipe rising from said boiler, heating apparatus for heating thewater, generating steam and causing the water to flow through the delivery pipe by steam pressure, a feed water cistern altion for turning on the cold water again ways open to the said dome and boiler, a ball while the first mentioned cam retains the valve supplying said feed water cistern, a heating apparatus in operation, and a stop cold water supply pipe leading to the ball on this second cam to limit the motion there- 15 valve, two rods one governing the heating of, substantially as set forth.
