BLEACHING APPARATUS.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it knownv that I, EDUARD HERZOG, manufacturer, of Erlach, Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented Improvements in Bleaching Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to apparatus for bleaching yarn, spools, cops and the like.
For bleaching yarn, spools and cops many vats were employed heretofore which were divided by inserted grates or sieves into three superposed compartments. The material to be bleached, z'. e. spools, cops, yarn, etc., was placed in the middle compartment. The bottom compartment formed the bleaching-liquid tank, from which the bleachingliquid was lifted by a pump into the top compartment, whence the same flowed back through the material to be bleached into the bottom compartment. This arrangement had the disadvantage that the material to be bleached was always traversed by the liquid from the same side, the consequence of which was that the top layers were bleached more rapidly than the bottom, because the bleachingliquid was already weakened somewhat when it acted on the latter. In order to bleach all the layers of the material it was necessary either to allow the bleaching-liquid to act for a longer time on the material, whereby, however, the top layers were attacked and injured, or the material to be bleached had to be turned after half the bleaching time so that the bottom layers were placed top and the top bottom. In addition, when turning over the material this had to be placed so that the side of each individual portion of the material which was formerly directed downwardly was now turned upward, so that each of these portions of the material was traversed by the bleaching-lye in the reverse direction. This changing of the position of the material to be bleached requires much time, however, and there is no guarantee that all the parts of the material are changed in position in the proper, above described manner.
A primary object of my invention is to save this operation which occupies much time and nevertheless to obtain uniformly bleached material. I attain this end by arranging the bleaching-vat revoluble so that after the same has rotated 180O not only are the bottom layers of material at the top and the top layers at the bottom, but also all the parts of the material are located in a reverse position, so that t-he bleaching-liquor can act on the material to be bleached not only in all its layers, but also uniformly on the individua-l portions of the material.
One illustrative embodiment of my invention is represented by way of example in t-he accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation showing my apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a like view at right angles to the former.
Referring to the drawing, my bleaching apparatus comprises an outer vat 1 having below a tank 2 containing bleaching lye. The lye is pumped by means of a pump 3 from this tank through the pipe 4t into the upper tank 5, through whose sieve-like, perforated bottom 6 it flows to the receptacle or box 7 for holding the material to be bleached. This box journaled by means of the pivots 8 in half-bearings 9 provided on the cross bars 10 of the vat 1.
The revoluble receptacle or box 7 has at its periphery at all four sides or, as shown in the illustrative embodiment, at each of two opposite sides a grating 11 which, however, is located somewhat below the edge of the box so that a distributing-tank 12 is formed above the grating. The box 7 is provided in front with a door 13, through which the material to be bleached is placed loosely or in boxes having perforated bottoms in the box. The box 7 may be rotated or turned by hand or be driven mechanically. As shown, it is rotated by hand by means of a crank-handle 14 secured on the shaft 15 which imparts its motion by means of the worm 16 and worm wheel 17 to the box. In order to enable loose material to be bleached to be placed more readily in the box 7, this may be arranged removable from the apparatus e. g. by its -being able to be drawn bymeans of a carriage out of the vat, or the pivots 8 may be provided with rollers so that the box 7 can be withdrawn by means of the rollers, the members 10 serving as rails. As shown in the drawings, the pivots 8 rest in half-bearings, which are each formed by two cross-bars 10, 18, and can be moved forward after the bars 18 have been pushed along the bars 10. Obviously, instead of the rect-angular receptacle 7 a drum or cylinder provided with tanks 12 can be employed for holding the material to be bleached.
W'hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In bleaching apparatus of the character described, the combination, with a Vat divided into an upper, a lower and an intermediate compartment, said compartments being in communication with each other, of a receptacle for holding material to be bleached mounted revolubly in one of said compartments and in open relation therewith, substantially as described, and a pump outside the vat and having its suction connected to the lower compartment and its discharge connected to the upper compartment.
2. In bleaching apparatus of the character described, the combination, with a vat divided into three compartments in open relation one with another, and cross-bars on the sides of the vat, of a perforated receptacle normally mounted revolubly in the middle compartment on said cross-bars and adapted to be withdrawn on the same from the vat, substantially as described.
3. In a bleaching apparatus of the character described, the combination with a vat divided into an upper, a lower and an intermediate compartment, the upper compartment being separated from the intermediate compartment by a perforated partition, of a receptacle for the goods to be treated, said receptacle having opposite sides formed as distributing tanks with perforated bottoms, said receptacle being revolubly mounted in the intermediate receptacle, and a pump arranged to pump bleaching fluid from the lower compartment to the upper compartment of the vat.
