FIREPROOF WINDOW CONSTRUCTION. v
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1912.
` Application tiled February 20, 1912.k Serial No. 678,913.
T 'o all whom t may concern:
Beit known that L-EDMUND H. LUN-KEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireprootl lirdow Construction, of which the following a specilication. l
My present invention relates to improve ments in tire proof window. construct-ion ofthe type in which weight balanced sliding sashes of theirreversible type are used.
.metal of 18 gage.
of channell forni with a central partltion 4a,
vAmong the objects of the invent-ion are to providea simple and economical construction, one which shall Vbe strong and durable in use, in whichl the sashes maybe readily inserted and removed, and the weight@y and pulleys be readily accessible, and in which adjustment to cause proper iii of the sash may be` readily made.
lVit-h these and other objects in View the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particu larly dened byl-the appended claims.
, A window constructed in accordance with my invention'ff'is illustrated in the acco1npanying drawings in which,
Figure-l is a front elevation of the window'; Fig. 2Ais a perspective view `with the sashes and one of the lower cover plates removed; F1g. 3 1s a perspective View of the rear, and Fi'g.4 a perspective view of the front of one of t-he cover plates; Fig. 5' is.
a horizontal sect-ion on line 5-5 of Fig. l; Fig. 6 is a sectional plan. illustrating the manner of removing the sash; Fig. T is a vertical section on line 7 7 of Fig. l; Fig. 8 4is avert-ical section on line 8-8 et F ig.
1, Figs. 5 to 8 being for convenience oi illus,- tration drawn on a larger scale than t-he others.
Referring by reference characters to these drawings, the main trame l comprises a. -top member 2, preferably ot' box like forni, a bottom or sill member 3, and two side meinbers 4, 4, preferably constructed of sheet The side members are providing two parallel weight. boxes within which move theweights 5 and 5a for the upper and lower sashes respectively. The open sides of the members 4 vare closed by cap' plates 6, which are'a-nged, crimped or folded over the edges of the' vsidemembers 4 as indicated at 6a, to aiorda 'firm connec- - lower sashes 8 and 9 are guided.
tion, being preferably-secured thereto by lspot welding.
ianges di' to furnish masonry guides -and 60v means for securing tly screens or shutters.. These cap plates are provided with openings 6c and 6l for access to the pulleys and' weights, which openings` are covered by the coverplates 7 upon which'the The cover plates are provided with vertical ribs 7 and 8u which engage with corresponding channels in the edges of the upper and lower sashes, Fig. the cover plates being secured to the cap pistes by' any suitable means, such for example as the screws indicated at l0, which engage with the threaded holes provided in bars 10a. In order to enable the insertion or 7 5 removal'of the sashes or their adjustment when desired the cover plates are divided horizontally on a line slight-ly above the top ofA the lower sash when said lower sash is closed such line of 'vision being clearly indicated 80 atl2 in Figs. 3 and 4, and the cover plates are provided with a plurality lot transversely arranged filling strips or bars as indicated at ll, held in place by the screws l0 and some of which may be removed or more added as 85 circumstances may require. When the sashes are pushed clear to the top of the window and one of the lower cover plate sections removed, which enables the sash, when.
lowered, to be crowded sufficiently to o'ne' 90 side to enableit `to clear the flanges 6a of the.
cap plates upon the/ opposite. side, as yindicated in Fig. 6, then, of course, the sashI may be readily removed. In the replacement of the sash a reverse operation takes 95' place, and after the sash has been put back, into position and shoved vto the top ofl the window, the npper end of the cover plate section is and sliding it up between the lower end ot the sash and the cap plate at an angle and then forcing it back into posit-ion to be fastened by the screws. lt is thus evident that without-the two part or sectional adjustable cover plates the insertion and removal of the sashes would be impossible, as there` would not be sufficient side play for the sashes to clear the tiange '6a. The illin g strips l1 are placed transversely so as to give upper and as clearlyV shown in l pnt into place by engaging the progections af carried by the upper sections support to the entire width ot the cover plates.
The side members 4 are also preferably provided with flanges formed by angle irons as indicated at. 13, secured vin-place by spot weldings and forming wind breaks.
`Referring 'more particularly to Fig. 8, it will be clear that thesill 3 is provided with and upwardly extending llange 3a which engages a channel formed onthe lower edge of the sash. In order to drain away any leakage or condensation from the sash, I provide a drain tube lllb which leads from the depressed portion 14a on the inside of the llange or rib 3 to the 'outside of the sill.
. The `sill is' also provided with an inwardly projecting :flange 14:, under which the stool of the sill is placed when attaching the trim.
Thev upper cross member 2 is provided with a flange or rib 2a, also wedge shape in cross section, which cooperates with the upper edge of the sash to form a tight joint in the same manner described in connection with the sill and lower sash.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a fire proof Window construction, a main rameincluding side members of channel' form providing weight boxes, channel I shaped cap plates secured to the edge of the side members and having openings lor ac cess to the pulleys and weights, iipper and lower removable cover plates secured to said cap plates and having guides for sliding sashes and transversely arranged spacing strips interposed between the cap and cover plates, substantially as described.
2. In lire proof window construction, a main ranie'ineluding side membersof channel form rovided with weight -boxe's,.chan nel'shapev cap plates, the legs-of which are secured tothe outer edges ot' theside mem bers forming projecting flanges, openings in the cap platesA for access to theweights and pulleys, and upper and lower cover plates removably secured betweenr the projecting -flanges ol' the cap plates, said cover plates having guides for the sashes.
3. In `tire proof Window construction, a main frame including side members of channel form provided with weight boxes, channel shaped cap plates, the legs ol? whichl are secured to the outer edges of the side mem-l` y bers forming projecting flanges, openings in the cap plates 'tor access to the weights and pulleys. and upper and lower adjustable cover pla tes removably secured between the projecting flanges ol the cap plates, said' cover plates having guides for the sashes.
l. In tire proof window construction, a main traine including side members ot chalinel torni provided with weight boxes, channel shaped cap plates the legs of which are secured to the outer edges of the side members forming projecting flanges, openings in the cap plates for access to the weights and pulleys, and upper and lower adjustable cover plates removably secured between the lprojecting flanges of the cap plates, and having guides for the sashes, the lower cover plates being longer than the up-` per vcover plates.
5. In tire proof window construction,y a main frame including side members of channel 'form provided with weight boxes, cliannel shaped cap plates the legs of which are secured to the outer edges ofthe side ineinbers forming projecting flanges, openings in the cap plates tor access to the weights and pulleys, and upper and lower adjustable cover plates removably secured between the projecting flanges of `the cap plates, and having guides for the sashes, the lower cover plates being longer than the upper cover plates, said upper andlower cover plates having interlocking ends.
6. In tire proof window construction, a main frame including side members of channel form provided with weight boxes, channel shaped cap plates the legs of which are secured to the outer edges of the side niembers forming projecting llanges, openings in the cap plates'for access to the weights and pnflleys, `an(`l upper and lower adjustable cover plates removably secured between the projecting tlanges of the capA plates, and hav- .ing guides for the saslies, the lower cover plates being longer than the upper cover plates, and having spacing'v strips interposed between the cap and cover plates, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signaturev in present-.e of two witnesses.
