To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, Josnrn S. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chlcago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Printing Devlces, of which the .following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of printing devices referred to in my appl1cation filed concurrentlyherewlth October 24, 1910, Serial No. 588,584, and comprising a frame carrying a printing form and adapted to be stored in accordance with a card index system and run through an addressing or other printing machme to take an impression therefrom. These devices are used principally for printing addresses and are generally employed by those who send out many-bills, circulars 'or other printed matter regularly to the samecustomers, such as gas companies, electric light companies, telephone companies, and publishers, as well as bankers, brokers, insurance agents, manufacturers and retailers.

The object of the invention is to reduce the expense of maintaining a system of printing devices of this general character by providing for the renewal of so much only of the printing device as is necessary when changes occur in the address. And a further object of the invention is to provide a sectional printing plate for a printing device of this character with means for securing the sections in the frame so that any section may be renewed without requiring the renewal of the entire plate or form.

In my other application above referred to I have generically claimed and shown one specific form of printing device adapted to attain the objects herein sought but the broad invention may be embodied in another specific form as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the printing device. Fig. 2 is a front vlcw of the frame with the card and printing plate sections removed. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail plan views of the printing plate sections.

The general construction and arrangemen of parts corresponds closely to that described in my concurrent application, October 24, 1910, Serial No. 588,584, the frame 6 being of any suitable construction and provided with means for detachably secur- 5 ing the card 7 and the sections 8, 9 and 10 of the printing plate thereon. In the form shown the card bearing the inscription produced by the printing plate is held in place by the bead 11, the lips 12 and the end stop 13; the section 10 is detachably held in place on the frame by the locking device 14, the lip 15 and the bead 16; the section 9 is detachably held in place on the frame by the bead 16, the lip 17, the lip 18 and by the section 8 which is itself detachably held in place on the frame by the sections 10 and 9, the projection 19 on the section 9, the lips 20, and the projection 21 on the locking device 22 which engages the recess 23 and by the projection 24 on the frame. The lip 17 is arranged to overlap and engage the sections 8 and 9 at their adjacent right-hand corners and the section 10 is preferably cut out at 17' to accommodate the lip 17 and so that the sections 8 and 9 may engage the adjacent side edge of the section 10. In this embodiment of the invention the section 10 is as wide as the combined width of the sections 8 and 9 and occupies a position at the ri ht of said sections and cooperates with t e lip 17 in forming a stop against endwise movement of the sections 8 and 9 in one direction. The section 8 is of less length than the corresponding section in the form disclosed in my concurrent application but for many purposes this construction will be sufficient. The section 10 may be inserted in and removed from the frame with out regard to the other sections but the section 9 can only be inserted or removed when the section 8 is not in place. The section 8 may be removed by disengaging the locking projection 21 from the notch 23 to permit said section to be slid out of the frame lengthwise, to the left, and, then the section 9 can be removed by sliding it upward until it is disengaged from the lip 18. The section 8 bears the form for printin the name, the section 9 the form for printing the address, and the section 10 the form for printing whatever information is desired. By reason of the fact that the section 10 is of considerable area it is therefore Letters Patent is:

' 1. A printingdevice comprising a frame provided with printing plate retaining means struck up therefrom, and-a printing, plate consisting of a plurality of detachable sections, certain of the sections extending lengthwise of the frame in edge engagement with one another, and one of the other printing plate sections being disposed with one of its edges in engagement with corresponding end edges of the firstmentioned printing plate sections, and a retaining lip struck up from the plate and overlapping the ends of said first-mentioned printing plate sections and located between the latter and the second mentioned printing plate section.

A printing device comprising a frame, means for retaining a printing plate flaton the frame, and a printing plate consisting of a plurality of detachable sections adapted to be engaged with said retaining another section being disposed transversely of the frame with its long edge in engagement with the ends of the other sections.

3.. A printing device comprising a frame provided with means for retaining a print ing plate in position on the frame, and a printing plate consisting of a plurality of detachable sections adapted to be slidably engaged with said retaining means, two of said sections being arranged side by side in mutual edge engagement. and another section of a length approximately equal to the aggregate Width of the first mentioned sections being disposed with its long edge in engagement with corresponding ends'of the other sections.

4. A printing device comprising aframe, a sectional printing plate, two of said sections being arranged side by side with their ends contiguous to a third section, and means for securing said sections on the frame comprising a lip on the frame arranged to engage the-adjacent corners of the first two sections, the third section being cut away to accommodate said lip.
