Specification of Letters fatent.
Patented May 7, 1912.
Original application filcdJuly 15, 1908, Serial No. 443,693. Divided and this application filed May 16,
1910.. Serial No. 561,669.
b all whom. it may concern: to it known that 'I, NnnnAM H. F, l'm'xo. a citizen of the United States, residsing' at Muneie. in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful lm1n-ovementsin Combined Locks and Escuteheon-Plates, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had. therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in combined. locks and escutcheon {Mute S and is av division of my application Number 443.69 liledll uly th 1908.
The object of my invention is to provide to esvulel'ieon plates so attached :to a lock that the plates'ean be adjusted withoutremoval iflOlll the loek to doors of different.' thicle nesses and in which said adjustment is readily made.
2O Another objectot my intention is to proi'idc a more simple, cheap and effective dewire of this character.
y la the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 a. horizontal longitudinal sectional view Quit a lockshowing my escutcheonplates applied thereto. ,1? ig. 2 is a perspective View oi the several parts separated.
-Referring now to the drawings, 5 indirates one of my improved escutcheon plates which is provided at it-s outer end with the laterally extending ears 6 and 7 to which are secured the ears 8 and 9 of the surface plate lO. These ears are preferably secured inQCtlltii by means of screws or bolts 8 by .15 ineaus oil which the face plate can be readily iletached from the escuteheon plate. .The surface plate. as shown. extends across the edge. of the'doorl, and is of a width considerably thicker than that of the door, so
10 that it will fit or completely cover the edge of the door of varied. thicknesses. The surfltaee plate on its inner face is provided with the inv-sardly extending barrel 11, which. carries the lock or latch and which can be of any desired structure. The operating means of the lock and latch is carried within the barrel and whereby the whole lock is within the barrel; The barrelv as shown is of a cylindrical form and extends back approximate to the rear edge or". the ese-utch- .eon plate The surface plate 10 is provided with a square opening 12, which communieates with the barrel 11., and through which the lock or latch extends, Vl hile I have sh own and described this specific form of lock carrying member, it will be understood that this could be varied without de-. parting from my invention.
When my device is applied to a. door of the width shown in the drawing, the end 10 of the surface plate extends beyondthe edge of the door and also beyond the eschutcheon plate 16. The surface plate is also of sutlicient width that the edge'of the escutoheon plate abuts'the inner facefof the surface plate. i
The escutcheon plate 16 is securcdlto the barrel 11 by a screw 52 and-said screw extends or is secured into a long sleeve 40 in the barrel, whereby the escutcheon 16 has a wide adjustment and is at all times jcarrie'd by the lock. i
, The lock is a mortise lock and isa plied as shown in the original specification, and thedoor 1 has the bore 13 communicating with. the slots 14. and 15. Thekn'obs are carried by the escutcheon plates and their spindlesgl5 and 16 pass through the slots. These slots also allow for the rock shaft 17;
the screw 52 and the sleeve 54 carried by the inside of the escutcheoh plate v5. This sleeve as shown receives a stud 55 carried by the barrel l1, and whereby the barrelis more rigidly carried by the escu-tcheon plate. The knob spindles being extensible and also the rock shaft 17, it will be seen ithat by means of the screw 52, the two esc utchcon plates may be adjusted to or from each other, or in other words, the plateffilfi is adjustcd from thcbarrel. This enables all of the'parts to be at all times held together and separated or drawn together to fitfgloors of different thicknesses, and enables the same to be more readily applied. 7 i
The ,escutcheon plates'and face platesarc secured'to the door by means of screws in the usual manner. a
Having thus described my inventiomwhat- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. In a lock of the character described, comprising an escutcheon plate, a surface plate removably secured to the escutcheon plate, alock-carrying barrel or casing extending inwardly from the surface plate parallel with the escuteheon plate, and a second escutcheon plate adjustably secured'to the barrel or look easing whereby he esiluttiheonplates may be moved to .or from each other for fitting 'doors of different thicknesses.
' 2.- In a lock of, the character described,
comprising an escutcheon plate, a face plate removably secured to the escutcheon plate at one end at right angles thereto, a barrel :or look casing secured to the face plate and extending parallel with the eseutcheon plate,
a second escutcheon plate adjustably secured to thebaifrel or look casing whereby the esplate, a face plate carried by the escuteheon plate, a face plate carried by the escutcheon Y plate, a lock casing carried by the face plate, I
. lock casing.
and a-se'cond escutcheon plate carried by the 4-. In a: lock, comprising an escutcheon plate, a lock casing carried by the face plate, and a second 'escutcheon plate adjustably carried by the casing..:.
; In a lock, comprising an eseutcheon '.-"plate a face plate removably secured to the l -Hescuteheon plate, a lock casing rigidly carpied by the face plateand parallel with the 'eseutcheon plate, and a second escutcheon plate adjustably carried by the lock casing.
" and a second'escutcheon plate adjustably se- "cured to the lock casing.
6. In a lock comprising an escutcheon plate, a face plate carried by the esoutcheon plate, alock casing rigidly carried by the face plate parallel with the-escutcheon plate, a second escutcheon plate abutting the face .lates, and'a screw connection between the ock casing and the escuteheon plate.
- 7. In a lock comprising an escutcheon 'plate having lateral ears at its outer ends, a face plate at'right angles to the escutcheon plate and havinglaterally extending ears overlapping the ears carried by the escutcheon plates, means for securing said ears together, a lock casing rigidly carried by the face plate parallel with the escutcheon plate 8. In a lock, comprising an escutcheon plate having lateral ears at its outer end, a face plate at right angles to the escutcheon plate and having laterally extending ears overlappingthe ears carried by the escut/cheon plates, means for securing 'said ears together; a lock casing rigidly carried by the face plate and parallel with the esouteheon plate, a, second escutcheon plate abutting the surface plate, and a screw passin throu h the escutcheon plate and secure into tie lock case whereby the second escutcheon plate is adjustable transverse the face plate.
il face plateremovably secured to the scutcheon plate,-'a lock casing carried by the face plate and "having a detachable communication with the' esoutcheon plate and a second escutche'on. plltte adjustably carried by the loclgecasingf a nd abutting the inner face of thefacc plate.
11. In. a lock cohiprising an escutcheon plate, a surface plate secured to the outer end of theescutcheon plate at right angles thereto, a lock case rigidly carried. by the surface plate parallel with theescutcheon plate, and having an elongated sleeve -extending at right angles thereto, and a sec ond escutcheon plate adjustably sevured. to the-lock casing and a screw carried by the second escutcheon plate and screwed into said elongated sleeve, whereby the second escutcheon plateinay be adjusted to or from the lock casing.
12. In a lock comprising an escutcheon plate having lateral cars at its outer end, a surface plate at right angles to the escutcheon plate and having'laterally extending ears overlapping the ears carried by the escutcheoir plate, means for securing. said cars together, a lock casing rigidly carried by the surface plate and parallel with the escutcheon plate and detachably secured to said escutcheon plate, a second escutchcon plate abutting the/surface plate. and a screw pass ing through the second cscutebeon plate and secured to the lock case.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlixniy
