JAMES M. CUFF, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO MORRIS HARRIS AND ONE-THIRD TO MILTON R. LEVY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY,
LOCKa-STRIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed March 22, 1906. Serial No. 307,352.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. CUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Strikes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door locks and latches, and particularly to the striker device which is secured to the frame of a door and in connection with which the latch-bolt or latch and lock bolts of the lock operate; and
the object of the invention is to provide an adjustable striker device which in practice is connected with the door-frame and is adjustable toward and from the door, so as to adapt the latch and lock to the shrinka e of the door and door-frame and permit 0 the convenient operation of the lock or latch af ter such shrinkage.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im, proved striker device; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view similar to 1, but showing a modification; Fi 4, a s1 e door-frame and a similar view of a door-lock applied to la door and showing the o eration of my im proved striker device w en the door-frame and door have shrunk, the doorframe and door being shown in section; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 a sectional planview of the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, but showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention I have indicated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 at a and 1), respectively, a art of a door-frame and a part of a door, an I have also shown at c in said figures an ordinary door-lock provided with a lock-bolt 0 adapted to be operated by a key,- and with an ordinary latch-bolt 0 adapted to be operated in one direction by the spindle view of the striker device applie to a c and in the op osite direction by a spring; but as the door-ihck formsno part of my invention the details of its construction are not shownand described.
In the practice of my invention I provide an adjustable striker d, which comprises in the form of construction shown a rectangular box mounted in casing e, which in practice is sunk into a mortise formed in the door-frame a, said casing being rovided with a flange or rim e ,.by which it is bolted to the door-frame and which is also countersunk in said frame, and the casing e is also covered by a face-plate f, countersunk in the door-frame.
The box d, which constitutes the striker proper, is made adjustable toward and from the door by means of screws g, mounted in the o posite end portions of the casing e, and whic pass through shoulders or projections d on the end portions of said box, said screws being provided at their inner ends with heads g rotatably secured to or in the back or inner wall of the casing e and at their outer ends with heads 9 to which a suitable wrench or screw-driver may be applied through openings f 2 in the face-platef.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5', inclusive, the striker device (I and its inclosing' casin e are countersunk in the door-frame, as ereinbefore stated, and the lock 0 is countersunk in the door and in order to .adjust the striker device (i toward and from the door all that is necessary is to turn the screws'g according to the direction in which the striker device dis to be'adjusted, and in this way the said striker device may be adjusted, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to accommodate the parts of thelock to the shrinkage of the door and door-frame, or so as to enable the lock and latch bolts of the door-lock to operate, notwithstanding .the shrinkage of the door and door-frame.
I may also connect with one side of the face-plate f a loop-shaped or similar spring h, as shown in Figs. Band 5, against and in connection with which the latch-bolt c operates, the object of this spring being to form a buflerfor said latch-bolt, especially when the striker device d is'in the position shown in Figs. 4: and 5, said bufier serving as a guide for the latch-bolt; but it will be understood that the said spring will operate when the striker device d is in its innermost position.
The construction shown in Fig. 6 is the same in all respects as that shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, except that the lock and striker device are secured to the outside or face surface of the door and door-frame Although'I have shown and described my improvement in'connection'with an ordinary door-lock having a lock-bolt and a latchbolt it will be understood that the same may be emplo ed in connection with an ordinary door-latc having only a latch-bolt, and al v though I have shown and described my improvement as applied to doors only it will be apparent that "the same may be applied -to hinged window-sashes, similar devices.
My invention is not limited to the exact construction herein shown and described, and various changes in and 'modific tions of gates, and other or l i l i i I l the construction shown may be mad e without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing-its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An adjustable striker device for use in connection with a door and adapted to receive the bolt or bolts thereof, said striker device comprising a main casing adapted to be secured to the door-frame and open in the direction of the door and provided with a faceplate adapted to close the opening therein, and an adjustable supplemental casing set into the main casing and extending through the said face-plate and open in the direction of the door, and means for adjusting the supplemental inner casing toward and from the door, comprising screws which are passed through bearings connected therewith and are moilnted in the main casing, said screws being adapted to be operatedethrough holes in the face-plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in
presenceof the subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of November, 1906.
