To all to boot it may concern Be it known that I, CALHOUN COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bakersfield, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented certain new and useful: Improvements in Hasp Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to fastening or locking devices for doors, gates, box lids and analogous devices, but it has particular reference to hasp fasteners which are especially adapted for use in connection with such devices.
The invention was designed in order to provide in a hasp fastener an improved means for lookin or coupling the hasp proper to the keeper in such a manner that the cooperating parts of the hasp and keeper will fit together even though the members upon which they are mounted may have moved relative to each other such as where a door, gate, box lid or the like, sags, shrinks or swells.
The principles of the invention are ap plicable to hasp fasteners in which the keeper is provided with a loop adapted to extend through a slot in one end of the. hasp proper and to receive a padlock, and the principles of the invention are also applicable to hasp fasteners in which the hasp itself carries a key-operated locking bar or bolt adapted tolockingly engage a portion of the keeper.
Devices embodying the principles of the invention may be made of cheap materials and in a very simple manner, and hence they may be of very simple, cheap but nevertheless strong and durable construction, which are qualities that are desirable in devices of this character.
The novelty in the invention resides in the various details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts which are iereinafter specifically described and claimed and which are shown in the accompanying drawings.

As hereinbefore explained the principles of the invention may be embodied in connection with a hasp fastener in which the hasp proper carries a locking bar or bolt adapted to lockinglyengage the keeper such as is shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, and also in connection withhasp fasteners in which thekeeper carries a loop adapted to extend through a slot formed in the hasp proper and to receive an ordinarypad-lock or other suitable locking. device, such as. shown in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive.
In the embodiment of the invention-illustrated in Figures .1 to 4 in the drawings, the numeral 1 designates'as a whole a hingehasp having an attaching leaf 2 hlngedly connected at 3 to a swinging leaf at. The leaf 2 is adapted to be secured by one or more screws, bolts or the like, to a door, gate, box lid or analogous device, and in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings the leaf 2 is shown as being secured by means of a screw 5 to a door D. p
The swinging leaf 4: of the hasp is provided with a casing or housing 6 in which a suitable key-operated lock mechanism is mounted. To operate this" mechanism a key may be inserted through the key-hole 7 formed in the outer side of the housing 6. The lock mechanism may be of any suitable structure so long as it has a locking bar or bolt such as is represented by the numeral 8. The locking bar or bolt 8 shown in the drawings is fixed at its intermediate portion to a pin or shaft 9 which projects from the rear of the housing 6 and hasp leaf 4; and which is adapted to be turned when the lock mechanism is operated by a key so that the bar 8 may be positioned so, as to extend either 1ongitudinally of the hasp leaf 4 or transversely of the latter.
The keeper for the hasp leaf ,4 comprises aplate 10 adapted to be secured by means of screws, bolts or other suitable securing elements 11 to the door jamb J. This plate 10 has its side edges turned inwardly so as to form in the plate an undercut groove 12. The groove 12 is adapted to receive the locking bar 8 forming a part of the lock mechanism carried by the swinging leaf 4 of the hasp. When the bar 8 is positioned so as to extend longitudinally of the hasp leaf 4 it may pass into the groove 12. When the lock mechanismuhas beenoperated so as to swing the bar 8 transversely of the leaf 4-, the bar 8 will have its ends engaged beneath the undercut portions of the groove 12 so as to lock the leaf 4; to the keeper plate 10.
In case the door D'should sag, shrink or swell, and thus move relative to the jamb J, the cooperating parts of the hasp fastener will nevertheless fit together since the bar8 may pass into the groove 12 at any place along the length of the latter. This is a decided improvement over the heretofore known and used devices of a similar character.
Tn Figures 5 to 8 inclusive of the draw ings, theprinciples of the invention have been illustrated as embodied in connection with a hasp fastener in which. an ordinaryletter D. The other end of the hasp bar 13 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 16. I
The plate 10 is se' 17, to which is fixed an outwardly extending loop 18 adapted to pass through the slot 16 in the hasp bar 13 and to receive the padlock P.
The button 17 is not only slidably mounted in the groove 12 of the keeper plate 10 but is also .turnably mounted, so that it may be slid along the groove 12 and turned in order to locate the loop 18t-o extend through slot 16 in the hasp 13 regard ess of whetheror.

the construction, use and advantages of the invention will undoubtedly be understood so as to enable those skilled in the arts to which the invention appertains to make use of the same.
It is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the details of construction may be made without departing from the principles or sacrificing any'of the advantages of the invention, and hence it is to be understood that such changes may be made within the scope of the append ed claim.
I claim A keeper for a beep comprising a plate adapted to be attached to a support and having a wide undercut groove therein, a button slidably and turnabiv mounted in said groove, and an outwardly extending loop fixed to said button and extending outwardly through the groove and moved to a 1 desired angular relation to said plate through turning of the button in the groove.
