To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. F. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
My invention relates to improvements in combined locks and latches.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined lock and latch for use on doors, and similar structures, which may be more readily applied to the door and which is adapted to adjustment, whereby the escutcheon plates rest fiat against the sides of the door as in the usual form of lock.
Another object of my invention is to provide a lock of this type in which the knob,.
lock'and all operative parts are carried by the escutcheon plates and are removed or placed in the door from the edge thereof without disconnecting the escutcheon plates.
A still further object of my invention is to provide the arrangement and construction of parts whereby the lock is more readily applied to the door and doing away with mortising the door as usual when the same is accomplished with an auger or saw.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a horizontal, sectional view of a door and jamb taken through the lock as it would appear applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view of the lock taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical, transverse, sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detached, perspective view of the several parts operatedby the knob spindle, and key, for independently and jointly operating the lock-bolt and latch-bolt. Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the outer edge of the door and 2 the door-jamb, all of which are of the usual form. The jamb 2is provided with the usual off-set andthe keeper 3 having the beveled surface 1, all of which is of the usual form and needs no further description.
My improved lock consists of the escutcheon plate 5 having adjacent its outer end the ears 6 and 7 to which are secured the ears 8 and 9 carried by the surface plate 10, which extends across the edge of the door. The surface plate on its-inner face is provided with the inwardly-extending barrel 11, which carries the lock and latch, and their operating means, and said barrel is of a cylindrical form and extends back approximately to the rear edge of the escutcheon plat-e 5. The surface plate 10 is provided with a square opening 12, which communicates with the barrel l1, and through which the bolt and latch extend. The surface plate, as shown, is of a width slightly greater than that of the door, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus allows of the same being applied to doors of difierent thicknesses, which adjustment will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The application of the device is as follows: The edge of the door is bored, as indicated at 13, which is of a diameter to snugly receive the barrel. At each side of the bore the door is sawed out, as indicated at 14 and 15, forming two horizontal slots communicating with the bore, and through which the knob-spindle passes to allow the device to be readily applied to the door from the outer edge thereof, the barrel entering said bore. By this arrangement it will be seen that the lock may be applied to the door without removing the knobs or spindles, or without disconnecting any of the operative parts of the same, but by removing the screws for securing the escutcheons to the door.
The escutcheon 16 is secured to the barrel, as hereinafter described, and whereby both escutcheons are removed with the barrel, or the entire lock is carried by the es cutcheons so spaced and adjusted that the lock will fit doors of different thicknesses. The barrel 11, as before described, is of a cylindrical form, and has one end secured to the surface plate 10 and the rear end closed. The barrel has one side removable, as shown in Fig. '2 and Fig. 4:, and indicated at 18. The said removable side has at one end ears 19 interlocking with recesses 20 in the stationary part of the barrel, while the opposite end is secured by a screw 21, which is screwed into an ear 22 carried by the inside of the barrel, and whereby by simply removing the screw 21 the removable section is removed exposing the operative parts of the lock. The barrel, as before described, is rigidly attached to the face plate 10, and said face plate is provided with the square opening 12 through which the bolt and latch extend from within the barrel. The face plate at one side of the opening is provided with a rearwardly-extending plate 23 forming a guide for the lock-bolt 24. The said bolt 24 is of a hollow square form having the front side 25 open. The bolt has rearwardly-extending web portions 26 and 27 which are provided with inwardly-extending lugs 28, 29, 30 and 31, from both the front and rear edge, which form guides for the webs 32 and 33 of the latch 34. The rear ends of the webs 32 and 33 are provided with the enlarged portion 35, which serves as .a stop to limit the rearward movement of the bolt on the latch webs, and also forms a guide for the rear end of the latch, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The web 32 of the latch is provided with a block 36 screwed thereon, and which is adapted to engage the ear 29 of the bolt and limit the outward movement thereof, thus allowing the bolt to extend out flush with the end of the latch, but preventing it from passing beyond the same.
The bolt 24 is of a size to snugly lit the opening 12 in the face plate, while the latch fits within the bolt, and one is independently movable of the other, so that either the bolt or the latch may be moved out or in, independent of the other. The latch 34 is provided with the rearwardly-extending pin 37 around which is a sleeve 38, and surrounding the sleeve is a coil spring 38, the outer end of the spring bearing against the latch and normally holding it in an outward position. The inner end of the spring bears against a flange carried by the sleeve and said sleeve rests in a notch carried by the sleeve 40. The said sleeve as shown is rigidly carried by the barrel and extends outwardly between the webs 32 and 33 of the latch. The barrel opposite the sleeve and on the outside is provided with a lug 41, which enters the recess 42 in the escutcheon plate 5, and is secured in said recess by a pin 43, whereby the barrel is held to the escutcheon plate intermediate its ends.
Carried by the sleeve 40 on the outside of the enlarged portion 35 of the latch is a disk 44 having the tubular member 45 rigidly carried thereby. The disk 44 is provided with a notch 46 into which fits a lug 47 carried by the bolt proper, and whereby the rotation of the disk throws the bolt 34 in or out. The tubular member 45 is notched, as indicated at 48. The sleeve 40 is internally screw-threaded, and carried by the escutcheon plate 15 is a sleeve 49 having a notched inner end 50, which interlocks with the notches 48 in the tubular member 45. The outer end of the sleeve 49 on the outside of the escutcheon plate 16, is provided with a thumb-piece 51 by means of which the sleeve is oscillated. Passing through the sleeve 49 is a screw 52 which is screwed into the sleeve 40 which holds the escutcheon plates together.
The barrel 11 is provided with an opening 53, and extending inwardly and surroiniding the same is an annular flange 54 into which fits the reduced portion 55 of the member 56. The said member 56 has an enlarged outer end and is provided at its inner end with the squared opening through which the sleeve 67 passes. Within this enlarged portion of the member 56 is a disk 58 having a square opening 59 through which the knob-spindle passes. The outer edge of the disk at opposite sides is provided with lugs 60 and G1, which enter the notched end 62 of the collar 63, whereby the rotation of the knob rotates the collar for the purpose presently described. The member 56 is provided with a flange 64 upon which rests the rear end of the latch, and said flange is adapted to engage the lower edge of the lugs 65 and 66 for moving the latch inwardly when the knob 67 is operated in either direction.
Secured to the inner end of the knob (37 is a sleeve 67. The said sleeve is of a square form on the exterior and is secured to the knob by means of a washer (38 having a square opening through which it passes, and said washer is secured to the spindle by means of screws whereby the sleeve is oscillated with the knob. The sleeve hasa round interior surface through which passes the spindle 57 and whereby the same is oscil lated independent of the sleeve. The inner end of the sleeve enters a square opening in the member 56, whereby the same is oscillated with the knob.
Loosely mounted upon the sleeve 40, as before described, is the disk 44 having the notch 46 which engages a lug 47 carried by the bolt member, and whereby the bolt is drawn inwardly or forced outwardly by the oscillation of the disk as heretofore described. In order to allow the lock to be operated from the outside after knob (37 has been dogged by the slide 84, I provide the flange 64, which engages the lug 66, to retract the latch bolt and which also engages in a cam cut away portion 68 of the disk 44, to oscillate the same and thereby project the lock bolt after the latter has been retracted by the latch bolt. 1 This flange 64 is operated by the knob spindle, which is operated by the key and turns independently of the knob 67, after said key has been inserted into the knob 67 to unlock the spindle from the knob. The outside knob 67 is of any well known form having the ball bearing connection, as indicated at 70, with the collar 71 projecting from the escutcheon plate 5.
Loosely fitting within the member 63 is the reduced portion 72 of the member 78, and the said member is provided with a flange 74 resting upon the flange 64 of the member 63. The inside knob 75 has ball bearing connections with the collar 72 carried by the escutcheon plate 16, as indicated at 70. W
The inner end of the knob has a member 77 secured in a recess by means of the washer 79, and held against rotation by means of the square opening in the washer through which it passes. The member 77 is squared and enters the squared opening 78 in the member 7 3, and whereby the same is oscillated or rotated. The member 77 has a round opening therethrough which receives the knob-spindle 57 to freely rotate or oscillate within the same, independent thereof.
In order to frictionally hold the lock-bolt in either its inner or outward position, I provide a pivoted member 7 8 pivoted at 7 9 within the barrel and having a curved outer end resting against the sleeve 45. The lower face of said pivoted member has a pin 80 projecting inwardly and engaging the disk 44. Said disk has two depressions or re cesses 81 into which said pin extends, and the pin enters one recess when the bolt is in its outward position, and the other when the bolt is in its inward position. Carried by the outer face of said pivoted member is a. coiled spring 81 which bears against the inner face of the removable section 18 of the barrel, whereby the proper tension is exerted upon the pivoted member for holding the bolt in its proper position.
The rear end of the barrel is provided with wedge-shaped headings 82 and 88, which are oppositely arranged, and between which is a flat plate 84 having wedge-shaped grooves 85 in its edges and receiving the beading, whereby the plate 84 is slidably mounted thereon. The inner edge of the plate 84 is provided with a notch 85 into which extends the lug 86 carried by the member 56, and whereby the same is held against rotation, and thus prevents the latch from being operated by the outside knob 67. The plate being slidable, it will be seen that when it is moved rearwardly the lug 86 is disengaged from the notch and the member 56 allowed to be oscillated by the outside knob. The plate 84 is provided with a transverse slot 87 and mounted in the openings in the barrel is a shaft 88 having a cam portion 89 within the slot 87, whereby the oscillation of the shaft moves the plate back and forth for the purpose heretofore set forth. The end of the shaft is hollow, as indicated at 90, and provided with a pin 90. Carried by the escutcheon plate 16 is a rock-shaft 91 having at its outer end the thumb piece 92 by means of which the shaft is oscillated. The rock shaft is provided with a longitudinal groove 93 and said shaft enters the hollow portion 90 of the shaft 88, and the pin enters the groove in the rock-shaft and locks the same together against rotation, yet allows the rock-shaft 91 to be readily removed with the escutcheon plate 16. Surrounding the rock-shaft on the inside of the escutcheon plate 16 is a coil spring 94, which has one end bearing against the escutcheon plate and the other end secured to the rock-shaft, whereby the same is frictionally held, to prevent it from being jarred or otherwise accidentally turned. Within the knob 67 is a lock casing 93 of a form well known in the art, and within which is the look, also of well known form, operated by a key 94 which revolves the spindle and operates the bolt and latch, as heretofore set forth.
The operation of my lock is as follows: The parts being set in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the plate 84 is moved inwardly, causing the lug 86 to enter the notch 85 and the member 56 is knob 67 is prevented from turning. Thus a it will be seen that neither the bolt nor the latch can be thrown by the ouside knob, but by means of the key the spindle 57 may be oscillated, which in turn oscillates the member 63 and by means of the flange 64 engaging the projection 66, the latch bolt is drawn inwardly carrying the lock bolt 24. The sliding member, as described, is operated by the shaft 88, and thus when leaving the house, or when it is desired to lock the door, the said lever is thrown to bring the plate 84 in the position shown in Fig. 2. The inside spindle has the square sleeve 77 fitting into the square opening 78 of the member 73, and whereby the said member 73 is oscillated at all times with the operation of the knob 75. The latch 34 serves as the usual latch when the plate 84 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, as the outside knob cannot be operated and the key must be used to throw the latch. The bolt 24 is thrown by the lever 49 having the bifur cated end interlocked with the sleeve 44, carried by the plate 45. the plate has the lug 47 normally resting therein and the oscillation of said plate throws the bolt outwardly and serves as an additional fastening means. This bolt, as heretofore described, can only be thrown by The notch 46 of s the key from the outside knob when the plate 84 looks the member 56.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a belt, a latch carried thereby and movable thereon and normally outwardly spring held, means for simultaneously moving the bolt and latch inwardly by means of the knob on either side of the door, means for locking the outside knob against operation, a look within the outside knob whereby the bolt and latch may be operated by a key independent of the knob, and means for operating the bolt from the inside independent of either knob.
2. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a bolt, a latch carried by the bolt and outwardly movable, means carried by the latch to move the bolt inwardly, knobs adapted to operate the latch and bolt from either side of the door and means for locking the outside knob against operation.
3. In a lock of the character described, comprising a bolt, a latch within the bolt and independently outwardly movable, a knob on the inside for moving the latch inwardly, a lug carried by the latch and engaging the bolt and moving the same inwardly with the latch, and a rock-shaft for moving the bolt outwardly independent of the latch.
4. In a lock of the character described, comprising a hollow bolt, a latch slidable within the bolt and normally outwardly spring held, means operated by the knobs for retracting the latch, a lug carried by the latch for engaging the bolt and moving the same inwardly with the latch and a second means for moving the bolt inwardly.
5. In a lock of the character described, comprising a hollow bolt, a latch slidably mounted in the bolt and normally outwardly spring-held, a lug carried by the latch for engaging the bolt and moving the same inwardly therewith, means carried by the lock on the inside of the door for operating the bolt and latch, means carried by the lock on the outside of the door for operating the latch and bolt, and means for locking the outside operating means against movement but allowing the inside means to operate the bolt and latch.
6. In a lock of the character described comprising a barrel or look casing, a square bolt extending through one end, a latch slidably mounted within the bolt and extending through one end thereof, a spring for normally holding the latch in its outward position, knobs for operating the latch from either side of the door, a lug carried by the latch for engaging the bolt and moving the same inwardly therewith, a rockshaft for operating the bolt independent of the latch, and a sliding member adapted to lock the latch operating means of the outside knob, substantially as described.
'7. A look of the character described comprising a barrel or lock casing, a square hollow bolt slidable therein, a latch slidable in the bolt, independent latch operating means for the inside and outside knobs, a lug carried by the latch and engaging the bolt for moving the same inwardly with the latch, and a sliding means for operating on the inside and locking the outside knob latch operating means, whereby the latch is locked against operation from the outside and adapted to be operated by the inside knob.
8. In a lock of the character described comprising a lock casing or barrel, a hollow square bolt slidable in the casing, an outwardly-spring-pressed latch within the bolt, knobs on each side of the housing and having separate independent latch operating means, a lug carried by the latch, and engaging the bolt and adapted to draw the same inwardly, a rock-shaft mounted in the casing and having a disk secured thereto, said disk having a cut-away portion, a lug carried by the bolt and extending into said cut-away portion, and means carried by the inner end of the rock-shaftfor oscillating the disk, whereby the bolt is withdrawn by the rock-shaft.
9. In a lock of the character described comprising a lock casing or barrel, a hollow square bolt slidable therein, an outwardly-spring-pressed latch within. the bolt, knobs on each side of the housing and having separate independent latch operating means, a lug carried by the latch for engaging the bolt and drawing the same inwardly, a rock-shaft mounted in the casing, a disk carried by the rock-shaft and having a cut-away portion, a lug carried by the bolt and extending into said cut-away portion, a plate slidably mounted in the casing and adapted to lock the latch operating means of the outside knob.
10. In a lock of the character described comprising a barrel or look casing, a hollow square bolt slidable therein, a latch slidable in the bolt and normally outwardly-spring held, and extending beyond the bolt when the bolt is retracted, lugs extending from opposite sides of the inner end of the latch, means operated by the outside knob for engaging the lugs on one side for operating the latch, means operated by the inside knob for engaging the lugs on the opposite side and operating the latch, a lug carried by the latch for engaging the bolt and moving itinwardly therewith, a rock-shaft mounted in the casing, a disk having a cut-away portion, a lug carried by the bolt and extending into said cut-away portion, means carried by the inner end of the rock shaft for engaging the disk, and oscillating the same, a look within the outside knob and having a spindle extending inwardly into the barrel, and means carried by the spindle for engaging one of the lugs carried by the inner end of the latch.
11. In a lock of the character described comprising a barrel or look casing, a hollow square bolt slidable therein, a latch slidable in the bolt and normally outwardly spring held, the inner end of the latch extending beyond the bolt when the bolt is retracted, lugs extending from opposite sides of the inner end of the latch, means operated by the outside knob for engaging the lugs on one side for operating the latch, means operated by the inside knob for engaging the lugs on the other side and operating the latch, a lug carried by the latch for engaging the bolt and moving it inwardly therewith, a rock-shaft mounted in the casing, a disk carried by the inner end of the rock' shaft and having a cut-away portion, a lug carried by the bolt and extending into said cut-away portion and the rotation of the disk retracts the bolt, a look within the outside knob and having a spindle extending inwardly into the barrel, and means operated by the spindle for engaging one of the lugs carried by the inner end of the latch, a sliding member within the housing and having a notch in its edge, the outside knob operating means having a lug to enter said notch, whereby the knob is locked against movement, said member having a slot therein and a rock-shaft mounted in the casing and having a cam-surface within the slot for moving the member in or out of engagement with the outside knob operating means.
12. In a lock of the character described, comprising a barrel or look casing, a bolt slidable therein, a latch slidable on the bolt, lugs extending from opposite sides of the inner endof the latch, means operated by the outside knob for engaging the lugs on one side for operating the latch, means operated by the inside knob for engaging the lugs on the other side and operating the latch, a lug carried b the latch for engaging the bolt and moving it inwardly there with, a rock-shaft mounted in the casing, a disk carried by the rock-shaft and having a cut-away port-ion, a lug carried by the knob spindle and entering said notch, a look within the outside knob and having a spindle extending inwardly into the barrel and means operated by the spindle for engaging one of the lugs carried by the inner end of the latch.
13. In a lock of the character described, comprising a bolt, a latch within the bolt and independently outwardly movable, a knob in the inside, a spindle carried by the knob for moving the latch inwardly, a lug carried by the latch and engaging the bolt and moving the same inwardly with the latch, a knob 011 the outside and having a spindle telescoping within the spindle of the inside knob and independently movable and adapted to operate the latch and bolt, and means for moving the bolt inwardly and outwardly independently of the latch.
14:. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a bolt, of a latch carried thereby and movable thereon, a knob on the inside, a spindle for simultaneously moving the bolt and latch inwardly, a knob on the outside and having a spindle telescoping within the spindle of the inside knob and independently movable, means carried by the outside knob for moving the latch and bolt inwardly, and means for locking the outside knob against operation.
