WILLIAM BARTHOLOMEW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNQR TO TROY LAUNDRY MACHINERY COMPANY, LIMITED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DRY-ROOM HANGER.
Patented May 7,1912.
Application filed February 14,1910. Serial No. 543,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLiAM BARTHOLO- new, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dry-Room Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a dry-room hanger and particularly to a construction embodying opposite jaws by which the articles to be dried are suspended therefrom.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of hanger having opposite jaws, one of which is movable relative to the other, with latching means mounted to automatically retain the jaws in open position until they are released therefrom by the operator when inserting goods to be dried within the jaws.
A further object of the invention is to provide a support upon the hanger having a cooperating stripper connected to a movable jaw for automatic operation to discharge goods from the support in the opening movement of the jaws.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawingsFigure l is a front elevation of the hanger and its support; Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view. of the hanger; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of themovable jaw; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the fixed jaw; Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the jaws in closed position; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the jaws in open position; Fig. 7 is a detail elevation of the jaws and stripper; Fig. 8 is a detail perspective of the stripper; Fig. 9 is a vertical section showing a. modified form of stripper; Fig. 10 is a similar view of this modification in discharging position; and Fig. 11 is a detail perspective of the modified formof stripper.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The numeral 10 designates the hanger bar which may be of any desired construction. for instance provided with the cross bar 11 at its bottom and the usual chain link connection This hanger may he supported in any ordinary manner, for instance by the carrier wheels 13 traversing the track H from which depending arms 15 extend at each side of the hanger and are provided with inclined faces 16 adapted to operate the movable supporting jaw as will be here -which a gripping block 19 is secured, for
instance by means of a rivet 20. This block is preferably formed of wood or other material which would prevent injury or discoloration by rust of the goods held thereby. The fixed jaw is secured in position upon the cross bar 11 by means of the arm 21 extended from one of the side walls 18 and properly secured to the bar. Vithin these side walls, the movable jaw 22 is disposed and the side walls 23 thereof are pivoted to the walls 18 of the fixed jaw by means of a cotter pin or other suitable pivot 24. extending through the aperture 25 of the fixed aw and the aperture 26 of the movable jaw. Intermediate the walls 23 of the movable .jaw, a gripping block 27 is secured and is each aw.
For the purpose of automatically retainopened to discharge goods therefrom, a latch lever 30 is pivotally mounted at 31 upon the fixed jaw either by means of a cotter pin 32 or other form of pivot. This lever extends through an aperture 33 in the end wall of the movable jaw 22 and the lever is formed with a holding face or shoulder 34 to engage the wall of the movable jaw as shown in Fig. (3 and also with an operating handle 35 by which the lever may be raised to release the jaws as goods are inserted between them. Under some conditions of use, it is desirable to provide upon the hanger a support upon which collars. cuffs or other articles can be suspended during the drying action and to automatically strip or, discharge such articles from the support when the jaws are opened. one form of such support herein shown and comprises a hook or pin 36 sei cured to the outer l'ace of the fixed jaw 17. Cooperating with tlns pm is a stripper plate nl or hanng a ol a cotter pin to or other pivoting means. The lower end ot the stripper plate is provided with a longitudinal slot l'l through which the supporting hook 36 extends. llxtending upward from the inner end of the portion 39 is a lever arm 42 having a longitudinal slot 4- therein through which a pin 4t carried by the movable jaw 22 extends and travels in the movement of said jaw so as to shitt the stripper plate from the full line position shown in Fig. l. to that shown by dotted lii'iestherein and thus remove. goods tromth'e support. The movable jaw in itsreturnn mvement engages the latch lever and is held in open position while the stripper blade returns su'lliciently to leave the free end of the supporteXposed so that articles may be hung therein before the jaws are again closed, as shown in Fig. 7.
In Figs. 9, l0 and 11, a modified form of the stripper device is shown and cooperates with the pin or hook 15 carried by the fixed jaw 17. This stripper comprises a lever 46 having an angular portion 47 at its upper end provided with a longitudinal slot 48 and pivoted at 49 upon the movable jaw 22. The lower end of the lever 46 is provided with a looped portion 50 which embraces the support 45. Extending through the slot 48 is a pin 51 carried by the fixed jaw while the upper end of this jaw is slotted at 52 and the angular portion 48 of the lever extends theretihrough. By reference to Figs. 9 and 10, it will be seen that. a movement of the upper end of the movable jaw toward the end of the fixed j aw produces an upward swinging movement of the lever 46 and thus strips articles from the support 45 when the jaws are fully opened. as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 10, while when the jaws are latched in open position, the stripper returns to the full line position shown in that figure. The operation of this form of stripper is snl'istantially the same as that first described.
In the application of the invention, one set ot jaws may be used, but for the purpose of supporting articles at two points, the hanger shown with two sets of jaws which also greatly increase the capacity thereof for both shirts, rough dry work and other articles. The application of the support to the hanger in connection with the stripper, automatically operated by the jaws, further increases the capacity of the conveyor and dry-room. permitting the support of collars, cuffs and other similar articles at one side or end of the hanger.
Tn the operation of the invention, the jaws may be n'ranually actuated to release articles bifurcated upper end 36 extended laterally theretroin and pivotally mounted at I upon the lived aw by means I therefrom or automatically operated by the inclines shown in lflg. l, and in either event, are automatically latched in open position as the lever. riding upon the edge of the slot in the movable jaw, drops by gravity into contact with this edge as the jaws start to close under tension ottheir spring. This prevent the nece sity of the operator using his hand to open the jaws tor the insertion of the goods and greatly reduces the time required to relill the conveye atter one lot of goods has been discharged theret'rom. \Vhen the operator inserts the goods between the jaws, it. is only necessary to slightly raise the lever by the upward movement of his hand incident to inserting the goods and the jaws are thus automatically closed to grip the goods. The construction of the jaws secures the utmost rigidity with an economy of .-onstrt.iction and presents gripping .t'aces which prevent; injury to the goods and can be replaced whenever desired. The action of the stripper is entirely automatic in the movement of the jaws and after removing goods from the support, leaves an exposed end thereof upon which fresh goods can be suspended before and after closing the jaws.
lt will thus be seen that the invention presents a simple, etiicient and economically constructed form of combination hanger adapted to support all classes of goods while traversing a drying room and one in which the discharging action for both the jaws and stripper may be automatically etlected and the jaws also automatically held in open position for the introduction of other goods.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1.
