Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may Concern:
Y Be it known that I, Gnonen F. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at zona, in the county of Crockett and State of Texas, have invented a new vand yuseful Wood-lied Elevator, of which the following is a specication. V
This invention 'relates to oil well pumps, and more particularly to devices employed for lifting the sucker rods thereof.
The'primary object of the invention is to provide a rod lifter which may be secured to one end of the rod being lifted, the lifter having means to prevent rotation of the lifter Vwith relation to the rod under operation, during the lifting thereof.
A. further object of the invention is to provide means for locking the jaws in their gripping positions, the locking means being such as may be readily and easily thrown out of operation to quickly release the rod after the same has been lifted.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A depending shank7 forms a part of the head 5, and extends downwardly where the f connection with the same is clamped between the plates 8 and 9 which provide a support for the jaws proper, there being an opening provided in each of the plates 8 and 9 for accommodating the bolt 10, which passes through these openings and .through a registering opening in the shank 7, whereby the shank is secured to these plates 8 and 9.
'stationary jaw 11 has its upper extremity disposed between the plates 8 and 9 and secured thereto by means of the pins l2. and 13, the lower extremity of said jaw being curved as at 14 to provide the jaw proper. A portion of the aw 11 extends laterally as at 15, and has connection with the pin 16, whereby the lower portion of the jaw 11 is secured against displacement.
A pivoted jaw 17 coperates with the jaw 11 to accomplish the gripping of the rod under operation, and as shown, this pivoted jaw 17 has its upper extremity pivotally connected between the plates 8 and 9 by means of the bolt 18 passing through the plates, the lower extremity of said jaw 17 being curved as at 19 in a manner corresponding to the curvature of the stationary jaw 11, so that when the jaws proper are brought together, the same will properly lit around the rod to be removed.
Forming a part of the lifter, is a lower frame, which includes the spaced bars 20, which bars are connected lby means of the pins 16 and 21, the pin 16, as before stated forming the support for the lateral extension 15 of the jaw 11, while the pin 21 is formed integral with the locking arm 22, a portion of the locking arm 22 extending laterally therefrom, and formed into the spaced bearings 23, in which bearings is supported the pin 24, which pin 24 also has j movable jaw 17 through the laterally extending portion 25 of the pivoted jaw 17 in such a way that -movement of the locking arm 22 will move the jaw 17 toward and away from the stationary aw 11 to accomplishthe clamping result.
The upper extremity of the locking arm 22, extends inwardly toward the head 5 and is provided with a cut out portion 26 formed adjacent the upper end of the arm, at the forward portion thereof, which cut out portion provides a seat for the pivoted latch member 27, which is pivotally supported between the plates 8 and 9, the T-shaped head 28 thereohrnormally lying in the cut out portions 29 Vof the plates 8 and 9, the head being held in such position by means of the spring 30, which has one of its ends contacting with the shank 7, while the inter- Y mediate portion thereof is coiled around the pivot pin 31, which supports the latch member 27.
Operating adjacent the upper end ofthe locking arm 22, is the latch controlling member 32, which includes the spaced arms 33 adapted Ato embrace the inwardly extending upper end of the locking arm 22, these arms being pivotally connected to the inwardly extending portion by means of the pivot pin 34, the body portion of the latch controlling member extending downwardly, to embrace a portion of the locking arm 22.
As shown, the latch controlling member 32, due to its-pivotal connection with the inwardly extending portion of the locking arm 22, swings inwardly, so that the arms 33 thereof normally lie in a plane below the upper edge of the inwardly extending portion of the locking arm 22 to permit the latch member 27 to engage within the notched portion 2G of the inwardly extending end of the locking arm 22.
From the foregoing it is obvious that when the latch member 27 is in its locked position, the upper lextremities of the arms 33v are out of contact with the T-shaped head 2S of the latch member 27, but when it becomes necessary to release the latch member from the locking arm 22, itis only necessaryv to pivot the lower extremity o-f the latch controlling member outwardly, or away from the pivoted jaw, which movement causesthe upper edges of the arms 33, to contact with the U-shaped head 28 of the latch member 27, to lift the same from its position within the notched portion 26 to release the latch member 27 from the locking arm 22.
It will therefore be seen that upon further pivotal movement of the locking arm 22, away from the jaw 17, results in the jaw 17 being moved away from the stationary jaw 11 to release the grip on the rod under operation.
Inorder that the lifter propel' will be prevented from rotating with relation to the rod under operation, a securing arm 35 is provided, which arm 35 is formed of suitable resilient material and has a curved portion 36 normally lying in a position behind the pin 24, the lower extremity of the arm 35 'extending below the lower edges of the jaws proper, and being provided with inwardly extending lugs 37 adapted to embed themselves within the rod being lifted, the lugs 37 being shown, however, as sharpened to readily embed themselves within the material of which the rod is formed.
This arm 35 is also curved, and has its upper end provided with right angled extensions 38 to straddle the pivoted jaw 17 so that the arm 35 is prevented from moving laterally with relation to the pivoted jaw 17.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A rod lift including a head, a pair of jaws supported by the head, one of said jaws being pivoted with relation to the head, an operating arm having connection with the pivoted jaw, means for locking the operating arm for securing the jaws in a clamping position, and means supported by one of the jaws and adaptedto engage the material under operation for preventing twisting of the lift with relation to the material under operation;
2. A rod lift including a head, a pair of jaws supported by the head, a pair of spaced plates having connectionwith the head, jaws supported between the spaced plates, one of said jaws being pivoted with relation to the other jaw, spaced bars disposed at the lower end of the jaws, an operating arm disposed between the spaced bars and having connection with the pivoted arm, means carried adjacent the upper end of the locking arm for locking the arm and jaws in a predetermined position, and means disposed between the spaced bars for preventing twisting of the lift with relation to the material under operation.
3. A rod lift including a head, a pair of jaws supported by the head, a stationary jaw and a pivoted jaw supported adjacent the head, an operating arm having connection Vwith the pivoted jaw adjacent the lower end thereof, for moving onerrj aw with relation to the other, a locking means supported by the operating arm for securing the operating arm and pivoted jaw in a predetermined position, a securing arm of resilient material having connection with the movable jaw and having one of its ends extending below the lower edge of the jaws to contact with the material under operation for preventing twisting of the lift, and a connecting link having connection with the head.
4. A rod lift including a head, .a pair of jaws supported by the head, one ofsaid jaws being pivoted with relation to the other jaw, spaced bars disposed adjacent the lower end of the jaws, a locking` arm pivotally supported between the bars and having a locking means pivotally supported to the upper end thereof, said locking means adapted to lock the pivoted jaw in a predetermined position, and means supported between the spaced bars for preventing twisting of the lift with relation to the material under operation. 1 Y j 5. 6. A rod lift including a head, a pair of spaced plates having connection with the head, a pair of jaws supported between the plates, one of said jaws being pivotally connected with relation to each other, a locking arm having connection with the pivoted jaw, said locking arm having a right angled upper extremity adapted to move between the spaced plates, said right angled extremity having a ont ont portion adapted to accommodate the latch member for locking the locking arm in a predetermined position, and means pivotally connected with the right angled extremity for moving the latch member from the cut out portion.
