To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS B. Jnrrcorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Couch and Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved convertible couch and bed, arranged to permit conveniently changing the couch into a bed or vice versa, and to allow ready detachment of the parts for cleaning, repairing or other purposes.

For the purpose mentioned use is made of a couch frame, a bed frame section mounted to swing, and a rod mounted to swing up and down and engaged by the rear end of a bed spring attached at its front end to the forward end of the said bed frame section.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the convertible couch and bed with the parts extended to form a bed; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a front elevation partly in section of the convertible couch and bed with the parts folded to form a couch; Fig. 4 is a cross section of a detachable connection between the rear bed frame section and the couch frame; the section being on the line 44 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of part of the rear bed frame section, in foldedposition, and the couch frame shown in sec tion.

The convertible couch and bed is provided with a couch frame A having a back B and sides C, and a bed frame made in two sec tions D and D, capable of being folded one on top of the other when forming a couch bed frame section D is pr'ovidedwith a U- shaped frame D pivotally connected at its terminals at D with upwardly-extending standards D forming parts of the rear bed frame section D, and to the front bar of the frame D is secured the forward end of a bed' spring E in the formyof a flat woven wire spring, as indicated in Figs. 1- and 2.-

When the bed frame section D is extended, its forward end is supported from. the floor by legs G and the bed spring E now stretches horizontally, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to permit using the device as a bed. When the bed frame section D is swung rearwardly then the rod F is free to swing downward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, whereby the bed spring E can readily double up in the space between the sides C and the couch frame A, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The standards D are provided with outwardly-extending lugs D forming rests for the frame D of the bed frame section D when the latter is swung rearwardly into a, folded position, as previously mentioned and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 3. A row of spiral springs K are mounted on the under side of the couch seat J at or near the rear end thereof, so that when the bed frame section D is extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, then the said springs K form yielding supports for the bed spring E near the middle thereof. When the bed frame section D is in folded position then the springs K depend from the couch seat J in the space between the sides C of the couch frame A. p

The front L for the couch is formed of a U-shaped bar L hung on the pivots D connecting the frame D with the standard's D", and from the said bar L depends a front bottom board L and a strip or sheet of fabric material L extends from the said board L upward and is attached to the under side of the couch seat J. Now when the sections D and D are extended, as shown in Fig. 2, then the depending couch seat J presses the front L rearwardly into an inclined position, but when the section D is folded onto the section D, as previously explained, then the couch front L is I swung into a vertical position and the fabric material L is drawn taut by. the couch seat J thus forming an ornamental face for the couch, as will be readily. understood by reference to Fig. 3. A handle N, of leather or othersuitable material, is attached to the frame A is preferably inclined downwardly land forwardly, as plainly indicated 1n Flg. #2, so as to abut the "rear end of the couch seat J against the lower end of the panel B.

It is understood that by the arrangement described the rear bed frame section D is normally wholly within the space between the sides C of the couch frame A, and hence a very comfortable couch is formed when the section D is swung into a folded position, as the parts are then all contained in the space between. the sides C without any undue or objectionable projections at the front of the couch.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A convertible couch and bed, comprising a couch frame, a bed frame formed of rear and front sections pivoted together to fold one upon the other, the rear bed section being removably mounted in the couch frame and provided with standards at its rear end, said standards forming supports for the front section when folded, pivoted arms connected by a rod in sliding engagement with the rear faces of the standards, a fabric bed bottom secured to the rod and to the front end of the front bed section, and a couch seaton the under side of the front bed section.

2. A convertible couch and bed, comprising a couch frame, a bed frame formed of rear and front sections pivoted together to fold one upon the other, the rear section being arranged in the couch frame and provided with front" and rear standards, the rear standards forming supports for the front section when folded, arms pivoted to the front standard and connected by a rod engaging the rear face of the rear standards, a fabric bed bottom secured to the rod and to the'forward end of the front section, a couch seat depending from the front section, and spiral springs on the under side of the couch seat to support the bed spring liovhien the sections are extended to form a 3. convertible bed and couch, comprising a couch frame, a rear bed frame section in the couch frame and having front-and rear standards, a front section pivoted to the front standards of the rear section, arms pivoted to the front standards and connected by a rod in sliding engagement with the rear faces of the rear standards, a'fabric bed bottom secured to the said rod and to the front end of the front bed section, a couch seat provided with curved arms'pivoted to the front standards of the rear section below their upper ends, a flexible member connecting the other end of the couch seat with the front end of the front bed section, and springs arranged on the under side of the couch seat at the rear end thereof for supporting the bed spring when the sections are extended.

4:. A convertible couch and bed, comprising a couch frame, a bed frame formed of front and rear sections pivoted together to fold one upon the other, the rear section being arranged in the couch frame and having front and rear standards, the rear standards forming supports for the front bed section when folded, arms pivoted to the front standard and connected by a rod engaging the rear faces of the said rear standards, and a fabric bed bottom secured to the said rod and to the forward end of the front section.

5. A convertible couch and bed, comprising a couch frame, a bed frame formed of front and rear sections, the rear section having front and rear standards and arranged in the couch frame and the front section noeegms pivoted to the front standards, arms pivoted'to the frontstandards and connected by a rod movable along the rear faces of the 1 rear standards, a fabric bed bottom secured to the said rod and to the front portion of the hem section, and a couch seat depend flexible connection.

6. convertible couch and bed, comprising a couch frame, a bed ,frame made in front and rear sections pivotaily connected with each other to told one on top of the other, the rear bed framese'ction extending the rear bed frame section, at fabric bed bottom secured at its rear end to the said rod and at its front end to the forward end of the said front bed frame section, and e spring-pressed support on the said couch frame for supporting the front bed frame section in folded position.
