Patented May 3, 1932 'HERBERT RODRIGUEZ, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS FOLDABLE ROCKING CHAIR 4Application led 'January 6,' 1930. Serial No. 418,723.
This invention relates to improvements in foldable rocking chairs.
One of the main objects of this invention is to provide an economically constructed chair I5 which will serve the purpose of a rocking chair and a reclining chair, to be adapted for the home and also for the steamer deck and the lawn and for various purposes, and which can be readily folded and unfolded. A11- other object is to provide such a chair with pliable means for the seat and back, whichl and cleaned and recan be readily removed placed. A further object is to arrange the construction so that one pair of the legs can be easily secured under the seat means for supporting it, and can be readily released therefrom for folding the chair.
hese objects and other objects and advantages are attained with this invention, as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which ig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair, in its intermediate position. F ig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof,
in a reclining position.
' Fig. 3 is a showing the seat means raised or released `from the rearwardly slanting pair of legs,
l0 preparatory to folding the chair.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the chair folded.
In the drawings my invention is illustrated n the preferred form of construction, which comprises a base frame including a pair of base members or bars 10 and a cross-bar 11 connecting them at the rear ends.
A pair of frame members or frame bars 12 are pivoted at the lower ends to the front ends of the base bars 10, by the use of pivot means or bolts 13. Cross-rods 14 and 15 connect said frame meinbers at thepupper and the lower ends, respectively. The upper parts 12 of said frame members with their cross-rod 14 provide the back frame of this chair, while the lower parts 12 of said members with the cross-rod 15 provide the front legs of the chair.
perspective view. of the chair,
pivot means or bolts 17, and in the unfolded position extend upwardly and forwardly therefrom. A cross-rod 18 connects said legs at their upper ends. o
The seat means provided for this chair includes a pair of side bars or seat bars 19, which are pivoted at their rear ends to the mterme iate parts of the frame members 12, with pivot'means or bolts 20, and are connected at J{the front ends by means of a crossof each seat bar 19, to extend upwardly and forwardly therein, so that these seat bars can be readily hooked or securely mounted on Icrossl-od 18 which joins the upper ends of egs The seat means further includes a strip of pliable material 23, which forms the seat tion and also the back-rest portion of this chair. It is preferably made of fabric, as canvas or the like, and is looped or doubled to extend aroundrod 21 of the seat means and around rod 14 of the back frame. pliable strip preferably has two ends connected, as by the use of lacing means 24, so
Arm-rests are preferably also provided on this chair, preferably by means of horizontal links 25 which are pivoted at the rear to frame members 12, as with pivot means or bolts 26; and are pivotally supported at the front by links 27 pivoted thereto at their upper ends and pivoted at their lower ends to seat bars 19. Plates or means 28 are preferably also secured upon said horizontal links 25, for resting the arm thereon. rIfhis arm resting means thus swings and adjusts itself automatically along with the swinging and the folding of the chair, as substantially indicated in the drawings.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A foldable rocking chair consisting of base frame means, frame members pivotally mounted at the front thereof and the front legs and the back frame, there being an upper cross-rod on the back frame part of said members, seat members pivoted to said frame members to7 swing forwardly g5 providing thereof and being notched at the lower sides, rear legs pivoted to the rear `part of said base frame means and carrying a cross-'rod at the upper ends for engaging in said notches to retain said seat members supported thereon, a cross-rod at the front ends of said seat members, a strip of fabric having its ends connected for ready detachment and being looped around the cross-rodsv provided on"VVV said frame members and on said seat members to serve as the seat and the back-rest of the chair, and arm-rest means pivotally mounted on said frame members and including a pair of links pivoted to said seat members to swing therewith and to be folded with the chair. i
2. A foldable rocking chair consisting of a base frame, frame members pivotally mounted at the front thereof and providing the front legs and the back frame, and having an upper cross-rod on the back frame parts of said members, seat members having theirrear ends pivoted to said frame members to swing forwardly thereof and being provided with notches in their lower sides, rear legs pivoted to the rear part of said base frame and carrying a cross-rod at the upper ends for engaging in said notches to 'retain said seat members supported thereon, a crossrod at the front ends of said seat members, a strip of fabric havingits ends detachably connected and being looped around the crossrods provided on said frame members and said seat members to serve as the seat and as the back rest of the chair, and" arm-rest means including arm-supporting members havin their rear ends pivotally connected with t e frame members also including supportin links pivotally connecting the front ends o said rest members with the seat memto swing therewith and to be folded with the lchair, said chair serving as a rocking chair and as a reclining chair.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HERBERT RODRGUEZ.
