To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BREW- sTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Heating-Drum, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in heating drums.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of heating drums, and to provide a simple, eli'icient and comparatively inexpensive heating drum, designed to be applied to a stove pipe and to be heated by the smoke and other products of combustion, and equipped with means for permitting the smoke to pass either directly through the stove pipe, or spirally around tbe heating drum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a heating drum of this character, capable of affording ready access to its interior to enable it to be conveniently cleaned when necessary.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :--Figure 1 is an elevation of a heating drum, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vert-ical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a detail sectional view, illustrating the Ina-nner of securing the spiral partition to the central pipe.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illust-rated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the heating drum comprisesy in its construction a central pipe 1, an outer shell or caslng and a spiral partition 2,` surrounding the central pipe 1 and being of a width to extend therefrom to the inner face of the outer shell or casing. The central pipe 1, which is designed tobe connected with the stove pipe and to constitute a portion thereof, is provided with lower and upper inlet and outlet openings 3 and 11, and it is equipped with a damper 5, located within said pipe at a point between the said openings and adapted to permit the smoke and other products of combustion to pass directly through the central pipe, or to cause the smoke to pass through the opening 8 into the heating drum and through the latter to t-he outlet opening 4. The spiral partition, which is constructed of sheet metal, or other suitable material, eX- tends around the central pipe from the lower inlet opening to the upper outlet opening, and it is provided at intervals with projecting ears or lugs 6, preferably located at opposite sides of the central pipe and secured to the same by rivets 7,L or other suitable fastening devices, which pierce the lugs or ears and the central pipe, whereby the spiral partition is permanently and rigidly secured to the pipel.
The outer shell consists of a cylindrical body portion 8, and tapered or conical heads 9, constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material and provided at their outer reduced ends with annular attaching flanges or portions 10, fitting snugly the central pipe 1 and secured to the saine beyond the openings 3 and 4 by rivets 11, or other-suitable fastening devices. The conical heads or ends 9'are provided at their inner enlarged ends with 'vertical annular flanges 12 and outwardly extending horizontal annular flanges 13, forming an exterior annular recess 14 for the reception of the end edges of the cylindrical body portion of the outer shell or casing. The cylindrical body portion of the outer shell or casing is composed of two sections preferably semi-cylindrical, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and connected together at one side by a hinge joint 15 and having their edges 16 overlapped at the opposite side and secured together by catches 17. The hinge joint may be of any preferred construction, and in the accompanying drawing one of the sections has its side edge bent into substantially hookshape to form an inner groove 18, and the edge 19 of the other edge is curved outwardly to lit the groove 18, whereby a separable interlocking hinge joint is provided. The catches 17, which may be of any preferred construction, consist of short metallic straps or pieces of resilient material, secured to the outer one of the overlapped edges 16 and provided with slots 20 to receive projections n1 of the other section of the cylindrical body portion of the casing. The projections may consist of pins, headed at their inner ends and piercing the section on .which they are mounted and projecting from the outer face thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The catches detachably secure the sections together at ,one
side of the casing and maintain the hinged edges in their interloeked relation. By this construction, the cylindrical body portion may be easily and quickly removed when it is desired to clean the heating drum.

By this construction, the detachable cylindrical body portion of the outer shell or casing is rigidly ysupported in position.
The damper is provided with an operating rod or stem 22, piercing the walls of the pipe and one of the sections of the cylindrical body portion of the casing, and equipped at its outer end with a removable handle 23, adapted to be detached when it is desired to remove the cylindrical body portion of the casing when it is necessary to clean the heating drum. The handle is preferably provided with a threaded socket 24 to receive the outer threaded terminal 25 of the stem 22, but it may be secured to the latter in any other desired manner. Then the damper is open, the smoke passes directly through the central pipe, but when the damper is closed, the smoke is forced Athrough the heating drum and is caused to travel spirally around the inner pipe in the space between the same and the outer shell or casing.

A heating drum of the class described including an inner pipe having inlet and outlet openings, a spiral partition surrounding the pipe between the openings, conical heads permanently secured to the pipe beyondthe openings and provided with peripheral flanges, a cylindrical sectional longitudinally divided shell or casing surrounding the spiral partition and fitting the peripheral tianges and connecting the conical heads, and means to direct the products of combustion through the inner pipe or in contact with the outer casing alternatively.
3. A heating drum of the class described including an inner pipe having inlet and outlet openings, a spiral partition surrounding the pipe between the said openings, heads or ends secured to the central pipe beyond the openings and surrounding the same, and a removable shell or casing surrounding the spiral partition and connecting the heads or ends and composed of separable sections hinged together at one side and provided at the opposite side with catches connecting the sections and detachably securing the shell or casing in position.
4. A heating drum of the class described including an inner pipe provided with inlet and outlet openings, a spiral partition extending around the pipe between the openings, conical ends secured to the central pipe beyond the opening, a cylindrical shell or casing surrounding the spiral partition and fitted against the same and the conical ends and composed of two sections having their edges overlapped at one side, one of the sections having its longitudinal edge at the opposite side bent outwardly, and the other section being provided with an approximately hook-shaped portion forming an inner groove to receive the said outwardly bent edge, and fastening means for detachably connecting the overlapped edges of the sections.
