COIN-HOLDING POCKET FOR COVERS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL KRUEGER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Coin- Holding Pockets for Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The object of my invention is to provide a coin-pocket for covers of books, cases or analogous articles, the construction and arrangement being such that the pocket 1s countersunk within an aperture of the cover and is closed by a spring-controlled hinged lid adapted to be opened by pressure upon a tail-piece with which the lid is provided, said lid being suitably ornamented with a design, monogram or other embellishment, the device being particularly designed to be applied to prayer-books wherein a coin can be conveniently carried to church meetings for contribution.

Vith the above object in view the invention consists in what is herein shown, described and claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 represents an enlarged plan view of a coin pocket embodying the features of my invention, the same being shown in connection with a portion of a cover into which it is countersunk, a portion of the pocket lid being broken away and other parts in section to more clearly illustrate the structural features; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the same as indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the pocket and portion of the cover, the section being indicated approximately by line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detailed cross-section of a throat portion of said pocket showing the arrangement of spring and hinge connected lid, and Fig. 5, a perspective view of a book provided with a cover having a coin pocket therein in accordance with my invention.

Referring by characters to the drawings 1 represents a metallic circular pocket having a flat bottom and upturned circular side walls 2 that are merged into laterally extending wall-sections 2 together with the bottom, which wall sections and bottom extension constitute a throat. The upper edge of the circular portion of the wall sections has projecting therefrom a flat angular flange 8 that is disposed at a right angle to the side-wall, the flange terminating at the Specification of Letters Patent.

junction of the circular portion of the sidewalls and laterally extending sections 2 thereof. The pocket is fitted into an aperture of a cover 4, which aperture corresponds in shape to the circular pocket and its throat portion. The flange 3 of the pocket rests upon the upper face of the cover and said flange is provided with two or more pointed prongs 5 which are forced through the cover and upset as shown, whereby the pocket is held in its adjusted position within the cover aperture. The pocket is closed by a flat metallic lid 6 which has a tailpiece 7 that extends over the throat portion of the pocket, whereby the cover conforms in contour thereto. This tail-piece is preferably upset slightly to form a knob 7 and is also provided with outwardly extending apertured ears 8, which ears are engaged by a pin 8 that passes therethrough having its ends secured within suitable apertures in the side walls 2 of the throat. The pin is located in a relative forward position with relationto the throat and the tail-piece rearwardly of said pin is arranged to be engaged by one leg of a U-shaped flat spring 9 which straddles the pivot-pin 8. The lower leg of the spring rests upon the upper face of the throat bottom and is held thereto by a strap 10 which is cut out of the throat bottom and offset therefrom as shown and thus forms an interlocking means for securing the spring which can readily be inserted into the position shown. By this arrangement, as illustrated in the drawings, it will be observed that the pocket is of approximately the same depth as the thickness of the cover and will thus not present any appreciable raised surface which would otherwise be detrimental in handling the book.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that a coin or coins can be inserted within and removed from the pocket by opening the lid. This is efiected by pressure upon the knob 7 and when such pressure is relieved the spring 9 serves as a closing medium to hold the lid to its seat upon the flange 3 of the pocket, whereby said coins are retained.

I claim A coin-holder comp-rising a metallic pocket having a flat bottom and circular side-walls, the bottom and side-walls being provided with lateral extensions to constitute a throat portion, a fiat annular flange extending from the upper edge of the circular portion of the side Walls, securing prongs extending from the edges of the flange, a circular lid for the pocket having a rearwardly extending tail-piece adapted to fit over the throat portion of said pocket, apertured ears depending from the tailpiece into the throat portion of said pocket, a hinge-pin fitted through the lid ears and side-Walls of the throat-portion of said pocket, and a U-shaped spring disposed about the hinge-pin having legs adapted to engage the bottom of the throat portion of the county of Milwaukee and State of \Vis- 20 cousin in the presence of two witnesses.
