Description

l nena Cerca @anni @Wire CHADWICK, OE COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 102,563, dated May 3, 1870.
IMPRQVED POLICEMAN'S NIPPERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters vPatent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE LUM, DANFORTH H. ROYCE, MICHAEL TRENOR, and ROBERT OHAD- WICK, of Columbus, in the county-'of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new andvalnable Improvement in Policemans Nippers;.and we debereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of our invention, reference .being had to the accompanying' drawings and the letters andvgures of reference marked thereon, and which sa-id drawings are made a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to means for enabling a policeman, constable, sheri", or other executive officer to grasp and firmly hold an arm ofan arrested person, so as to prevent escape and It consists in a novel arrangement an'd combination of devices intended to' serve as valuable and effective means for the purpose mentioned. n
A of the drawings, represents two hooks or clasps, each having an ear marked h and arranged for pivoting inaI slotin the top of the handle, as shown. y C represents the handle, which is made hollow throughout, for' the purpose ot' holding and securing,
the devices hereinafterdescribed.
B represents a connecting-bar formed with shoulders at its upper end, adapted to clasp and hold the ears h of thehooks. This connecting-bar isarranged in the upright or perpendicular part of 'the handle, its base resting upon the tumbler D, next mentioned.
D represents a tumbler; its right-hand end rests in a shoulder of the vhandle,-and operates when on duty in the same manner as if it were pivoted therein.
1t has a circularshoulder at i, formed to receive and' act-nate the lower end of the connecting-bar, as shown on Figure 1, and it has also at its left-hand end asimilar circular shoulder or recess adapted to receive and actuate the lower ends of the thumb-rod and ratchet, as shown on said figure, and as hereinafter described.
G represents a thumb-rod having a circular top adapted vfor operation by the holders thumb, and a semicircular bottom adapted to sit and work in the recess at the lefthand end ofthe tumbler.
F represents an upright ratchet-bal', thelowersemicircular end of which rests in the recess in the tum\ bier, and by the side of the thumb-rod, as'shown ou lig. 1 of the drawings. The ratchet-teeth on the side of Figure 5, theioice of which is to act-nate said ratchetbar.
E represents a spring arranged in the transverse part of'the handle, as shown with its left-hand end restngfirmly.against the lower side of the tumbler D.
The office of this spring is tothrow'said tumbler and'A connecting-,rod B upward, and thereby close the hooks or clasps whenever the operator shall desireso to do. To operate our device the oflicer presses down the thumb-rod, and thereby closes the hooks around av wrist of the persony he wishes to secure. As this-is being done, the spring S forces the ratchet-bar against the cross-bar H, and one of the teeth of. said bar is made to engage with said bar and hold the hooks firmly together aroundthe wrist, clasped asY above mentioned. Y
To release the hooks from such wrist, the-operator vmovesfthetop of the ratchet-bar slightlytoihe left.
This-movementdisengages the ratchet from its shoulder and the hooks are unclasped.
What we, claim as our invention is The combination of theclaspsA, connecting-rod B,
' tumbler D, springs E and S, thumb-rod ,3f/aud ratchetbar F, as and for the purposes specified.
GEORGE LUIZ.'
DANFORTH H. ROYCE. MICHAEL TRENOR. ROB'I. CHADVVICK.
