To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JOHN S. Annnnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F aceDrops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in face drops for bridles, and the objects of my improvements are to produce a face drop that is simple and economical to manufacture and attractive and eflicient in use.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved face drop, applied to an open work bridle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the connection plate, and ends of straps connected thereto, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a back elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the connection plate, the straps being omitted. Fig. 6 is a similar View of the front plate before being connected to the back plate. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 0000 of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the blank for the back plate, the position of the slits for the channels for the straps being indicated by broken lines. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the rivet.

A is my face drop and comprises a connection plate B and a set of straps connected thereto, respectively, a top strap C and a pair of bottom straps D. The top strap C extends from the upper end of the connection plate B and is of suitable length to connect with the upper part of the bridle E. The bottom straps D are connected to the connection'plate B at a point on each side of the lower end and extend therefrom at an angular spread suitable for connection with side straps of the bridle E and near the lower end thereof. The said connection plate B comprises a front plate F and a back plate G, and the means of connection between the said connection plate and the straps comprise rivets H. The said front plate F comprises a circular plate of sheet metal generally flat and having an outer edge 10 suitable for being turned over and securing the outer edge 11 of the back plate G, and has a front face 12 suitable for being impressed with an ornamental configuration as shown, B. Rivet holes 13 are provided,

there being one for each strap G and D. The said back plate G comprises a plate of sheet metal formed from a circular blank and at positions corresponding to the loca: tion of the straps is provided with a threesided slit comprising the lateral slits 1 1 and the connecting slit 15. The lateral slits 14 are spread apart approximately the width of the strap and extend from adjacent the outer edge 11 inwardly, parallel with a radius, to a point inward relatively to the rivet holes 13, and, as stated, are cross-connected by the end slit 15, whereby a tongue 16 is formed integral with the said outer edge 11.

Holes 17 are provided in the tongues 16 corresponding to the holes 13 in the front plate and suitably located to register therewith in the final position. The central portion 18 of the back plate G is dished relatively to the edge 11 and tongues 16, Which edge and tongues are in abutment with the front plate F.

The lateral slits 14 in the back plate C connect the forwardly projecting outer edge 11 and the dished central portion 18 and therebyform the lateral walls of a channel 19 suitable for receiving and guiding the straps C and D.

As described, means are provided in both the front plate and the back plate for receiv ing the rivet H, comprising respectively the hole 13 and the hole 17. As shown, a double pronged rivet is provided for securing the strap, the rivet body 20 passing through the holes 13 and 17, the prongs 21 penetrat ing the strap, and bent over on the back face thereof. The body 18 of the back plate G, dished as described, is located backward relatively to the prongs 21 of the rivets and serves as a means of protection from the same. The said rivets H may have an ornamental head 22 as shown.

The portion of the turned outer edge 10 of the front plate F between the slits 14 forms a protecting edge 23 for the strap channels 19. The channels 19 are open at v the rear, exposing the strap ends located therein, and also exposing the inner ends of the rivets H, which conditions. facilitate the insertion of the rivet for securing the strap end.

As described, my face drop is simply constructed and presents an ornamental appearance in use, and is economical in the use of leather. The connections with the straps are easily made and, with a single rivet holding means for each strap, the same is generally guided in direction by the channels that are provided.

I claim as my invention 1. A face drop comprising a connection plate and a strap connected thereto, the said connection plate comprising a front plate and a back plate, a channel formed in the said back plate on the side remote from the said front plate and suitable for receiving and guiding the end of the said strap, and provided with means for securing the strap therein, and the said channel open at the rear and exposing the said strap end and the securing means.

2. A face drop comprising a plurality of straps secured to a connection plate, the said connection plate comprising a front plate and a back plate, the front plate having an outer edge turned over and engaged with the edge of the back plate, and the back plate having a tongue extending inward from the outer edge, and a channel parallel with the said tongue suitable for receiving a strap, and a rivet penetrating the said front plate and tongue, and also the end of a strap received in the said channel.

3. In a face drop, a connection plate com prising a front plate and a back plate, the said front plate having the outer edge turned over the edge of the back plate, and the said back plate having a tongue extending from the outer edge, and the said front. plate and tongue having holes in registration suitable for receiving a rivet for securing a strap to the said connection plate.

4. A connection plate having a front plate and a back plate connected together, the body of the said back plate dished rearwardly generally, except for a portion extending inward radially fronf the outer edge, whereby a radial channel is provided on the side remote from the front plate suitable for receiving and holding a strap end.
