Description

waited @Stime LUTHER A. JOHNSON, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 102,553, dated May 3, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAUL :FO-RV. LAYING- VENEERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it nul/y concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER A. JOHNSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Veneer-Former; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable Others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. j l
This invention relates to veneering, and consists in an improved caul, whereby the Operation can be performed with facility, accuracy, and thoroughness.
B represents the leg of a piano, billiard-table, or other article.
A, the caul or former, of corresponding shape and D', the space Occupied by the veneer. y
C C represent pipes, which are kept supplied with steam to maintain the caul at the desired temperature. These pipes may be arranged in coils of any suitable form, or the steammay be admitted directly into' the concavity formed in the caul.
The caul may be cast or Otherwise constructed.
The veneer, being -placed between the article and' the caul in the usual way, is compressed into the required shape, and may be held under pressure as long as may be found expedient after the steam is shut oil'. In this way the veneer, being bent and rendered pliable by the steam, conforms with great readiness and accuracy to the article, and forms, with the ad-` hesive substance employed tO bind it, not only a very close joint, but, also, without any. of those impalpable cracks which afterward cause it to peel ofi'.
Having now described my-invcntion,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- As an article of manufacture, the hollow veneer-ing tool .Orforrner A, having an S-shaped coil Of pipe, arranged therein as shown and described, and for the purpose speciiied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 17th day ot' January, 1870. l
LUTHERI A. JOHNSON.
