Description

WILLI-AM H.- KIGIIT, OF- BOSTON HIGHLANDS, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lettrns4 Peten-t No. 4104,858, dated .Time 28, 1870.
IMPRVEMENT IN SEC'URING' VENEERS To WCD.
The Schedule referred to in theseLetters Patent and making part of the name To all persons to whom these presents Ashall come".-
Be it known that I, WILLAM H. KNIGHT, of Boston Highlands, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Mode of Applying and Securing Veneers to Surfaces; and that the following description, taken' in connection with the accompanying drawing hereinafter referred to, formsA a full and complete specification of the same.
The present invention consists in applying and securing veneers to surfaces of wood, 85o., by expanding the wood or material that'isto receive a veneer, in combination with contracting the veneer, so that, when the two are placed together, and secured by glue or other snitableadhcsive matriaL-aud dried b'y the then contraction of the previously-expanded wood or. base, the grain or fibers of the veneerare brought most closely together, and the pores thereof tightened, preventing checking, so termed, that is, the cracking or breaking away of the veneer when in use.
It also consists, in combination with the above, in veneering the cases'or bo'dies of piano-fortes, more particularly by rst applying and securing the v cner to a comparatively thin picce'of hoard along its length, and in then applying such combined stlip to the body or case, in the ordinary manner now practiced of securing a veneer direct.
In the accompanying drawing this invention is illustrated. K
Figure l is an edge view of a veneer-receiving wood.
.Figure 2, a section of a veneer and a wood-base, the one secured to the other.
Figure 3, an edge View of 'the veneer and wood-base, shown in iig. 2, applied and secured to a block of wood, with the said wood-base in contact.
A, in the drawing, represents a veneer; Y
B, a wood-base, to which said veneer is applied and secured; and
C, a block to which the :combinedyencer A and wood-base B are secured, with the wood-baseA B in contact therewith.
In carrying out this invention, I expand the wood B, which is to receive the veneer A, by subjecting the same to moist steam, orto moisture in any form, and then, having dried the vencer A by applying heat thereto of '1250*ll`ahrenheit, more or less, in any suitable manner, by placing it in a heated chamber, or
by arranging it to be acted upon by heat from a suitable heating apparatus, the two are placed together; the veneer\ on the wood,`with glue or other suitable By thus expanding wood previous to receiving ai veneer, which has been to a greater or lesserextent dried 'and contracted in the'drying of the two after being glued together, the fibers or grain of the veneer vare of a necessity drawn tightly and closely together because of the greater contraction of the wood to which said veneer is applied, thereby, asis obvious, prevent-` ing the tendency of the veneerto check in its after exposure to the-atmosphere by use.
In veneer-ing piano-forte cases, the wood composing which cannot be expanded without detriment to they cases, the veneers are'applied by rst applying and securing them to a comparatively thin piece of wood, and then the combined strip attached to the case, in the ordinary manner of gluing a veneer direct.
Having thus described' my invention,- I shall state my claim as follows:
What I claim is- 1. The mode herein described of applying. andr securing veneers, the same consisting in expanding the wood to receive the veneer, in combination with contracting the veneer, substantially as described, for the purpose specied.
2. In veneering piano-forte cases', 85o., applying and securing the veneer iirst to a comparatively thin piece of wood, ,substantially as described, and then applying and securing such combined strip to the case..
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 25th day of November', A. D. 1869. v
