Be it known that I, MARTIN Rasmussen, a. subject of theKing of Denmark. and who have filed my intention of becoming a'citizen of the United States, residing :at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of ll isconsin, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Shoes rand I do declare the following to be a 'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use. the same.

This invention relates to improvements in shoes.

One object of the invention is to provide a shoe having an improved construction and arrangement of detachable soles which may be readily removed when worn and replaced byanother sole, and which when engaged with the shoe will be securely held in position. 7

With this object in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination andarrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed; h

My improved shoe comprises a main or stationary sole 1 which is preferably formed of wood and shaped to form the forward portion or half sole 2, arch portion or shank 2, and heel portion 1. The heel portion 1 has formed on its under side a depending stationary heel member 5. The edge of the forward portion 2 has formed therein a groove or channel 6.

The sole may be of any desired shape and has connected thereto an upper 7 which may be of any desired style. The loweredge of the upper is preferably nailed or tacked to the edge of the sole 1 and the edge of the forward portion of the upper is tacked in the groove 6 of the forward portion of the sole, as shown.

metal counter 8, the upperedge of which is riveted or otherwise firmly secured to the adjacent heel portion of the upper as shown.

Adapted to be detachably engaged with theforward portion 2 of the sole 1 is a detachable half sole 9 which is preferably formed of leather and shaped to correspond with the shape of the forward portion 2 of the sole. Secured to the inner side of the half sole 9 adjacent to its edges is an attaching member comprising an upwardly extending rim 10 having on its lower edge an inwardly extending attaching flange 11 which is engaged with arecess 12 formed in the inner side of the half sole 9 whereby said flange 11 will be flush with the inner surface of the sole. The flange is tacked or otherwise firmly secured to the sole to hold itin operative engagement therewith; The rim 10 is bent transversely to form an inwardly extending rib or bead 13 which,

when the sole 9 is applied to the main sole 1 of the shoe is adapted to be slipped or sprung into engagement with the groove 6 and over the edge of the upper secured in said groove. It will be noted that the rim 1O is'of such length that the inner ends thereof extend beyond the greatest width of the sole at the ball of the foot or into engagementwith that part of the sole which begins to narrow toward the arch or shank. As the rim conforms to the shape hr curvature of the sides of the soles it'wilil be seen that when the detachable half sole 9 is applied'and the rim sprung or forced into engagement with the groove of the am sole, the inwardly extending rear en 0f the rim, engaged with the narrow pfirtion of the sole, will prevent the detachble half sole from slipping forwardly and thus becoming casually disengaged from the shoe, and that the engagement of the rib or head 13 with the groove in the main sole will prevent any possibility of the detachable half sole dropping off from the main sole. It will be noted that when the rim 10 is engaged with the groove in the sole 1, and with the lower edge of the upper, that the tacks which secure said edge of the upper to the sole will be covered by. the rim and thus prevented from coming loose. I lower side of the sole 1 adjacent to its outer edge is preferably provided with a shallow recess lt which will provide space for the heads of the tacks which secure the rim 10 to the sole 9 so that said heads of the tacks will not interfere with the engagement of the detachable half sole with the main sole.

Secured to the heel member 5 is a downwardly extending metal casing 15, the lower edge of which projects a suitable distance below the lower side of the heel member 5 and forms a socket 16 with which is adapted to be engaged the'reduced upper portion of a detachable heel 17 Which may be formed of any suitable material. The heel 17 is preferaby secured in the casing and fastened to the'heel member 5 by means of a centrally disposed screw 18 arranged in and having its head in counter-sunk engagement with the heel and adapted to be screwed into the heel member5. as shown. By thus arranging the heel 17, the same may be readily removed from the shoe when worn and a new heel engaged therewith. v

Arranged int-he shoe and secured to the inner side of the main sole 1 in any suitable manner is an inner sole 19 which may be formed of rubber or any suitable material. To the lower side of the heel portion of the V inner sole is preferably secured a cushion 20 extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.

2. In a shoe, a stationary sole having a groove in its edge, a detachable half sole adapted to be applied to'the stationary sole, and an attaching rim secured to the detachable half sole and adapted to be sprung into the groove in the edge of the stationary sole.

3. A detachable half sole for shoes provided with a channel'in its upper outer edge and an attachable rim having its lower edge seated and secured in said channel and its upper edge extended upward and adapted to engage the edge of the stationary sole.
