; UNITED strATEs PATENT OFFICE. I
WILLIAM H. RA G-AN, OF SEOAM SPRINGS, ARKANSAS.
rmmr-rnocrnoron.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RAGAN, of Siloam Springs, in the 'county of Benton and in 1;] e State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvement in. Plant-Protectors, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
a. certal My invention relates to devices for protecting plants from the harmful effects of the sun and frost, and my object is to provide such a evice, which while perfectly servin pensive in cost and easily, yet securely, set in place, and to these ends my invention consists of a plant protector constructed substantially as lhereinafter specified and claimed. 1
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a perspective view of a plantprotector constructed in accordance with my invention.
In the embodiment of my invention illust-ratedin the drawing, my protector is composed of a conical frame 10 having a plurality of legs 11 for thrusting in the earth, and a hollow cone 12, preferably of paper or some other light equivalent material adapted to inclose or cover the plant to be protected, so as to exclude the harmful effects of sun orfrost.
wire and consists of a series of circular members 13, griadually increasing in diameter from the top of the frame downward, and a suitable number or plurality of vertically. extending wires. 14 to which the rings are joined at the points of crossing or intersection. The circular members may be separately formed. or as illustrated in the drawing they mavfbe the coils of a spiral, so that all the circular members are formed of a. single continuous piece of wire. and at the points of intersection of the circular members and said wires theconnect-ion may be made by soldering. or by loops, or in any othermanner desired. The legs 11,are each preferably ,/a part of or integral with a side wire. and as shown, each is formed by coiling or twisting the wire upon itself, the free for the cone.
the purpose intended will be inex-.
purpose of strengthening or stifiening the leg so that it may be readily thrust into the earth, and providing an excellent support The cone may be formed of a paper blank which is rolled into shape and thrust or insertediin the frame 10 from the bottom, until the-larger end ofthe cone passes lnto engagement with, the clips, and the natural tendency of the paper to expand.
will be sufficient to preserve the shape of the cone and retain the cone inthe frame by the pressure. of y the outer sides of the cone against the frame. ,Of course if desired overlapping portions of the cone may be gummed together or otherwise united.
The conical form of myprotector is important, not only for the reason just indicated, inthat it facilitates the placing of the paper cone within the frame and utilizes the expansive tendency of the paper cone to .hold the latter in the frame, but it is also of importance in the shipment or storage of the device, because they can be nested to'- gether. By twisting and thus contracting the cone it can easily be removed from the clips and taken out of the frame.
In'the'use of my protector the prong form legs are thrust into the earth over the plant to be'protected until the bottom of the cone touches or is sufficiently close to the earth.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is r A plant protector comprising a frame composed of a series of circular members having a common axis and graduated in diameter and side Wires .joined thereto, the

side wires being twisted to form legs and material within the frame with. one end engaged by said clips and the other end protruding above the frame.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.-
