ROW-MARKER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS E. WOODS and CHARLES E. WVILLL-mrs, citizens of the United States, residing at Headland, in the county of Henry and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Row-Markers, of which the following 1s a specification.
The invention relates to row markers, and has for its primary object to provide a row marker which is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, and that may be mounted upon the beam of a plow, whereby it may be swung to either side thereof, thus enabling the marking of the ground, so as to indicate the distance or width between the furrows.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a marker of this character in which the marking device may be adjusted laterally relative to the plow beam, thus enabling the marking of the ground, whereby furrows may be formed at difierent distances apart.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a row marker of this character which may be readily and conveniently attached to and detached from the beam of a plow, and also capable of adjustment for measuring the distance between the furrows, when the plow is in operation.
In connection with a device of this construction, the invention has for a further object to provide a novel construction, com bination and arrangement of parts, the-details of which will appear in the course of the following description, in which refer ence is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification by like characters of reference, designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a plow beam, showing the invention applied thereto and in position for marking the ground. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view through the inner tubular section of the supporting arm of the marker. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters indicate cor responding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a portion of the draft beam of a plow, which is of the ordinary well-known construction, and on which is mounted the Specification of Letters Patent.

will be hereinaftermore fully described.
The row marker comprises a supporting plate or base 6, the same being superimposed upon the top face of the plow beam 5, at the required point thereof,and is clamped there to by means of clips 7 which are adapted to embrace the plow beam for the fastening of the supporting plate or base thereon, the latter being provided with upturned bearing ears 8, in which is swingingly connected the marker arm, presently described.
The marker arm comprises an inner tubular section 9 provided at its inner end with an elbow 10, in which is fixed a pivot pin 11 journaled in the bearing ears 8 and formed integral with a forwardly converging brace extension 12, the latter being formed with an eye terminal 13, bent in a forward direction to lie against and in alinement with the outer end of the inner tubular section 9, and through which is passed an outer adjustable or extensible section 14:, the latter being telescoped within the inner tubular section 9, so as to lie atright angles to the beam 5 of the plow and to project laterally therefrom, when swung to either side of the line of draft of the said plow.
Mounted on the outer end of the extensible or adjustable section 14 is a land marking head, comprising a T-shaped coupling 15, the same being threaded upon the outer end of the said section let and carries oppositely extending forwardly bowed marking fingers or tines 16, the ends of which are directed rearwardly, so that upon the swinging of the marking arm at opposite sides of the beam 5, one of the marking fingers or tines 16 will contact with the ground, so that as the plow is advanced a line will be indicated in the ground for determining the location of the formation of the next furrow adjacent to the one previously formed. The outer section 14 carrying the marking head is locked within the inner section 9 by means of a set screw 18, threaded in the inner section 9, near the outer end thereof.
It is clearly obvious that the marking device may be attached to other types of agricultural implements or machines, and requires no alteration in the construction of such machines or said marking device for application thereto. Also, it will be seen that the marking arm may be extended or shortened, so that the furrows may be laid out at different distances apart, the marking device being capable of being shifted from one side to the other of the draft beam 5 of the plow, for convenience in the eXecution of plow work in a field, as will be obvious.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, and operation of the invention will be readily understood, without requiring a more extended explanation, and therefore the same has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a draft beam, of a row marking attachment, comprising a supporting plate adapted for horizontal and detachable connection with the draft beam and having upturned perforated ear terminals, an inner tubular section extending at right angles to said plate, an outer tubular section slidably engaged in the inner tubular section, an elbow union on the inner end of said inner tubular section, a brace rod disposed rearwardly of the inner tubular section and having an eye section at its outer end for engaging the outer end of said inner tubular section, the inner end of said brace rod being bent at an angle upon itself and passing through said ear terminals to form a pivot portion, the inner extremity of said rod engaging said union, for adjustably clamping said plate upon said draft beam.
