" UNITED STATES PATENT @lirica GEORGE IV. PHINNEY, OF GUICRNEVILIE, CALIFORNIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,831, dated March 31, 1891. Application filed November 20| 1890. Serial No. 372,083. (No model.)v
be a full, clear, and exact description of the,
My invention relates to an improved construction forplows; and it consists in providlng the plow with a jointed beam, a means for turning the beam to one side or the other and maintaining a draft directly upon the point ofthe plow, to whichever side it may be turned.
In the accompanying drawings I give a more complete explanation of my invention. Figure l is a plan or top view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
A is the rear portion of the beam of the plow, to which the handles B, the standard C, and the plow D are attached in the usual manner.
At the point E thefront portion F of the plow-beam is pivoted by means of a vertical pivot-bolt G, so that this front portion may be turned from one side to the other.
l'I H are jointed rods or links, the front ends of which are connected to the stout eyebolts I, which are fixed upon the front end of the beam. The rear ends of these links or rods, extending back one on each side of the plowbeam, are connected with a lever K, which is pivoted centrally beneath the rear and fixed portion A of the plow-beam. One end of this lever is extended out so as to form a pawl or catch, as at K', and this is engaged bya curved notched rack L. This semicircular rack has its ends pivoted to the side of the beam A, so that it may be lifted up to disengage it from the lever-arm K or pressed down to engage this arm when it has been turned to any point where it is desired to have it remain.
M is a lever fulcrumed to the rear end of the beam A, having one arm extending' bcneath t-he curved movable rack L, and the other arm is connected by a rod O with a lever P, fixed upon onel of the handles B of the plow within easy reach of the plowman.
The operation will then be as follows: When the plow-beam is set in a straight line, the le ver K is locked so as to retain itin that position, and plowing will then be done in the ordinary manner. If it is desired to throw the laudside of the plow toward the vines or trees when plowing in a furrow, itis done by first disengagng the curved rack L from the lever K, which operates the link-rods, and by turning this lever the front end of the plowbeam is thrown around to the right, which throws the landside of the plow toward the left of the line of draft, the lever-arm K being then locked in place by dropping the curved rack to engage it. The draft upon the forward end of the plow-beam will pull through the right-hand jointed rod, so that the draft will be in a straight line and the pull will come upon this rod. This enables the plowinan to throw the plow as far to the left as may be desired, while at the same time keeping the horse in the. furrow. If it is desired to throw the plow in the other direction, it is done by turning the front end of the beam in the same manner as before described to the left side, and when it is locked in this position the draft will come upon the left-hand jointed rod in the same manner as described in the first instance. By this arrangement the plow is very easily adjusted and caused to travel nearer to or farther from the lines of the vines or trees, the horse may travel at any point desired in the furrow, andthe draft will be maintained in a straight line through the medium of the rods. By reason of the joints in the rods, which correspond with the joint in the beam,it will be seen that when the beam is turned to either side the rod which is on the outer side willbend at the joint and lie around the outside ot' the beam, while the inner rod will form a cord across the inside of the curve or angle formed by the beam, and the draft will act in a straight line and directly upon this rod. Each of the rods is screw-threaded at the rear end and fits into the coupling end H which connects it with the lever K, so that by screwing the rods in to or out of the coupling they maybe shortened or lengthened to give them the proper tension and length.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is- V 1. A plow having the beam jointed so that the front epd may turn about a vertical axis with relation to the rear portion, a lever ful- ICO crunied to `tn rn in a horizontal ,plane iipon therearlportionof the beanniieible con-nections extending from the opposite ends of said lever to corresponding sides of the front and movable portion of the beam, and a device for holding the lever so that the beam may be turned vto eithe'rside and'maintained at an angle with the rear portion, substantially as herein described.
2. In a plow, the beam having a joint in its length about which the front portion may be turned from side to side, a lever fulcrumed to the rear portion of the beam so as to turn in a horizontal plane, jointed or 'liexibleiods having .the front ends connected with oppoysite-"sides of `the liront portion lof 'the plow- "beainfand the rearfends lconnected Wit/licor- 'r'espondin'g e'n'ds of -the'lever,and a l'movable -latchingdevi'ce ad'a'pted to engage'theleverso 'thatvth'e lfron-t end'of thelb'eammay be turned to'eithe'r side by the Amovement"of thelever *and retained A'an angle with therearlportion, su'bstantiallyfa's herein described.
3. Ina plowfthe beamhaving a joint in `Iits lengthabont which 'the `front port-ion vturns Yin va 'ho'ri'zontal plane, 'a `lever fnlerumed fto the rear por'tion VIof the beam, flexible vrods connecting the ends `of said 'lever'v'vth the -front portion of y'the beam f'so that 'fbymovlef E-r'n'ont'of the lever the beain'ina'yibe @turned-to one side ofthe-other, coupling ends by which 'fthe ro'dsare nnitedvithithe lever, and screw neeting the front 'portion of the beam with ythe ends of the lever so that the beam may be bent to lei-theriside -b'yimovinglsaid leverfa to allow lift 'to 1in ove and vthe beam ltobe 'tn-in'e'd, substantially as herein described. y
fIn Witness whereof "I have lheretihto set `m y Ehand.
