Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. IIOLGOMB, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. MENSING, OF SAME PLACE.
CULTlVATOR-GEARING.
SPECIE'ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,787, dated June 23 1885.
Application filed February 2, 1885. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK L. HOLCOMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Oultivator-Gearings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view. perpendicular view.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and easy mode of changing the position of cultivatorshovels, so as to regulate their depth according to the kind of soil to be stirred.
In the accompanying drawings I exhibit jointed drag-bars, each section provided with gearing as applied to each beam of a cultivator. The arm to which the drag-bars are attached is pivoted to the front beam-section at G, and has segment-gear A rigidly aifixed to the front end thereof. Another segmentgear, B, is pivoted to the beam in such a mannor as that the cogs of each shall work within the other. Segment-gear B is rigidly affixed to the lever F, which is held in position by means of a plunger-bolt 011 the end of the rod Fig. 2 is a plan or G springing into thenotches in the notched quadrant D.
It will be readily seen that when the lever F is shifted backward the shovels are brought more nearly into a perpendicular position, and when shifted forward the shovels are brought toa more slantingposition, thus reguo lating the depth of the shovels and the amount of dirt thrown out.
I am aware that a somewhat similar device has been employed for raising plows out of the ground, and also that hinged drag-bars have 5 been used on cultivators; but these I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is 50 1. In a jointed dragbar, the combination,
with the axle and forward section, I), of the rear section, (1, the pivot-bolt O, the geared arm A, the segment-gear B, and the bolt a, substantially as shown and described. 55
2. The combination of the jointed sections 1) (Z of the drag-bar, the pivot-bolt O, the geared arm A, geared segment 13, the lever F, springpawl G, and rack D, substantially as shown and described. 6.0
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK L. HOLOOMB. Vi tn esses:
