Description

M. COOKE.
Blasting Logs. No."102,503. Patented May 3, 1870. j
(a W l: 4 'W vemZ-Or UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW COOKE, OF SACRAMENTO CITY, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR BLASTING LOG-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,503, dated May 3, 1870; antedated April 27, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATTHEW OooKn, of Sacramento city, State of California, have invented a new and Improved Mode for Blasting Wood and other material and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists as follows: A cavity is made in a wedge, near the point. A perforation is made from top or side of Wedge at any angle connecting with said cavity. Drive the wedge with maul into a log or other material. Through the perforation blasting-powder, or other kind, is inserted till the cavity isfilled. A primer is then inserted in the perforation. This primer has a groove, in which is laid the fuse or powder. This primer is fastened at the top of the wedge by a set-screw. The fuse or powder is then ignited. The explosion takes place, and thelog or other material is burst wide open, and the wedge falls to the ground ready for use again. The wedge may be made of cast-steel or iron. The primer may be made of brass, copper, or steel.
My said invention is more particularly described as follows:
Perspective view is represented by Figure l. W W represent a wedge. a a a is the cavity in the wedge. m m represent the point to which the wedge is to be driven in the log or other material. b b I) represent the perforation from top of wedge connecting with the cavity. 01 is the set-screw which fastens primer in the wedge. f f represents the primer inserted in the wedge. (Vide Fig.2.) Fig. 2--f f represent primer. 9 g 9 represent groove in primer, in which is placed fuse or powder, by which powder in cavity is ignited.
I do not claim the primer as my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cavity in the wedge a a a, Fig. 1, and the perforation b '0 b, Fig. l, at any angle from top or side of wedge, connecting with said cavity.
MATTHEW OOOKE.
