JOHN O. OLSON, OF ZUMIBROTA, MINNESOTA.
BOX-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 20, 1911.
Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 639,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zumbrota, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in box fastenings, and more particularly for fastening the covers on egg-crates.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is an end view showing the invention applied to a box, Fig. 2 is a similar view in section of the box, showing the invention, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of another form of the bar.
A, represents the box, and 1 is. the cover which is provided with the flange or cleat 2. A horizontal cleat 3 is fastened to each end of the box A, and is provided with a recess or opening 4, and leading from the opening, longitudinally of the cleat 3, is a slot 5 in which is slidably mounted a bolt 6. A casing 7 is fastened in the slot by means of nails or screws, and one end of the casing engages a spiral spring 8 which surrounds the bolt 6, and the other end of the spring engages the enlarged head or nut 9 of the bolt. A knob 10 is formed on the bolt for moving it in the slot. The flange 2 is provided with a steel bar 11 which extends through the flange, and into a vertical slot 12 formed in the cleat 3, the vertical slot 12 passing through the horizontal slot 5. An eye 13 is formed in the bar 11, which is adapted to come in registry with the horizontal slot 5, whereby the bolt 6 will pass through the eye and lock the bar, and thereby fasten the cover to the box.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bar 11 is bent at right angles, and is received in a recess 15 in the top of the flange 2, and is held against movement by a nail or other means 16, which is driven into the flange and engages the end of the bar.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 3, I have shown a detail of a form of bar provided with a loop 17 which projects above the cover 1, so that in large-size cases, especially cases having more than thirty dozen eggs, the loops can be used as handles for carrying the crates, the bolts forming a means for fastening the bars in place and preventing the bars from being drawn through the flanges 2 when the case is lifted. Before the cover is placed upon the box or crate, and when it is desired to remove the cover from the crate or box, the bolt 6 is drawn rearwardly or away from the bar 11, and the knob 10 is given a quarter turn, causing it to engage a pin 18 which is carried by the cleat 3, projecting in the opening or recess 4. This pin prevents the bolt from moving, and allows the cover to be raised or placed upon the box so that the bar can move in the vertical slot 12. When the cover is placed upon the box, and the bars are received in the vertical slots 12, the knob is given a quarter turn, releasing it from the pin 18, allowing the bolt, under the tension of the spring, to move forward through the eye 13 in the bar 11 and to lock the bar and cover to the cleat 3.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a box and cover, the box having slotted cleats and provided with a recess or opening, a pin projecting into said recess or opening, the cleat having a bore extending from the recess or opening to the slot, a spring-actuated bolt slidable in the bore, said bolt having a head on the end in the recess in position to be hooked over the pin by turning the bolt to hold the bolt drawn against the action of the spring and a bar extending from the cover into the slot and having an eye in position to receive the bolt.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN O. OLSON.
Witnesses: H. E. Wnrss, A. H. GROV'ER.
