Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 5, 1910. Serial No. 595,584.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. IVHITNEY, a citizen of" the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burning Hot-Air Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to hot air furnaces, and particularly to such furnaces in which the combustion of gas is used as a source of heat.
The object of the invention is to construct a furnace of this character which will be simple in its construction and economical in its operation.
The said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, the described means, however, constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.
In said annexed drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical section of a furnace embodying my invention, showing a portion of the main air duct and of the combustion chamber in elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing parts in elevation of the said furnace, taken upon a plane at right angles to that of the plane of section employed in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detailed portion of the walls of the combustion chamber.
In the invention as illustrated in the drawings, an outer inclosing casing A is provided, which is formed at its lower rear side with an air inlet a. To this inlet is connected a main air duct B, which traverses the interior of the casing, in the manner shown. In the upper portion of the casing is provided a second opening a, to which is connected an outlet pipe A for carrying off the gases of combustion. Surrounding a portion of the said, main air duct is a combination chamber C, which comprises in its structure two complemen tary wall members 0 c which are formed with interior water ducts 0, which are connected with each other at the top and botshown in Fig. 1.

The space 0 separating the upper ends of the members 0 0 forms an outlet for the gases of combustion, and discharges into the interior of the casing, as shown. Below the surrounded portion of the air duct B is a gas burner D which is connected with a suitable source of gas by means of a gas duct E, suitable valve 6 and air inlet 6 being provided to feed a mixture of gas and air to the burner in the usual manner. The forward ends of the upper longitudinal ducts 0 are connected with two transverse pipes 0 which in turn discharges into a central outlet pipe 0 Each of the lower ducts c c is connected with a water inlet pipe 0 It will therefore be noted that water from the inlet pipes may be caused to pass through the walls of the combustion chamber, and be discharged through the common outlet pipe 0 such water while traversing the water chamber formed by said walls becoming highly heated, as will be readily understood. Such heated water may therefore be used as may be required. Another portion B of the main air duct B returns after leaving the combustion chamber, as is shown in Fig. 1, and is located directly above the combustion chamber, so that the gases of combustion passing out of such chamber will strike such air duct portion and further heat the air therein. The upper end of the air duct is connected with a plurality of chambers A A to each of which is connected a hot air outlet A A the air being thus distributed as required. In this manner, it
will be noted that the air traversing the air duct becomes highly heated, and such duct presents a comparatively large radiating surface to the heat produced by the combustion in the combustion chamber, a very economical and eflicient construction being thereby obtained. Furthermore, it will be noted that water may be readily heated as desired by passing same through the walls of the combustion chamber.

what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a gas-burning hot-air furnace, the combination of an outer'inclosing casing, a single air duct traversing the interior of said casing, a plurality of complementary members mounted within said outer casing and forming a combustion chamber, said chamber being open above and below and surrounding a portion of said air duct, a gas-burner beneath said chamber, said casing being provided With an outlet for the gases ofcombustion, a second portion of the air duct being located above said combustion chamber, the Walls of said complementary members forming a Waterchamher, and inlet and outlet connect-ions for the latter.
2. In a gas-burning hot-air furnace, the combination of an outer inclosing casing, a single air duct traversing the interior of said casing and comprising tWo substantially horizontal portions intersecting the same vertical plane, a separate casing comprising a plurality of spaced complementary members Within said outer casing and forming a combustion chamber surrounding the lower of said horizontal portions and having an opening below, a gas-burner beneath said opening, said combustion chamber having an opening at the top into said casing, and the latter being provided with an outlet for the-gases of combustion, the upper of said horizontal portions being located direct-1y above said top opening, the Walls of said complementary members forming a Water chamber, and inlet and outlet connections for the latter.
