SPECTACLE-CASE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL SUHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 171 Paterson Plank road, West Hoboken, 1n the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Spectacle- Case, of which the following is a speclfication.

The object of this invention is to provide a satisfactory spectacle case, requiring no spring, but operated by the resiliency of certain engaging flanges or lips of the two halves of the case in proximity to the hinge pintle of the latter.

To this end the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a front perspective view of the spectacle case embodying my inventlon, fully opened; Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the same taken from the rear; Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, taken through a pair of the lips, the case standing half open; Fig. 4 represents a view similar to Fig. 3 except that the case is about three fourths open, the resiliency of the lips acting to complete the opening; and Fig. 5 represents a view similar to Figs. 3 and 4, except that the case is only about one fourth open and the lips are in position to snap it together or closed.

The halves or sections of the spectacle case are designated respectively M and N (the former being the cover section) and are pivotally connected by a hinge pintle rod 0 passing through their integral knuckles or eyes P Q, arranged to alternate and register as usual for accurately receiving said rod. These knuckles or eyes are arranged in four pairs, each consisting of a knuckle P of one half or section of the case and the knuckle Q of the other half or section and with said pintle rod they constitute the hinge of the case. These pairs of knuckles or eyes are separated by three intervals, each interval being approximately as long as a pair of said knuckles, and occupied by a resilient flange or lip A, B or C integral with said section M and filling said interval so as to barely permit the necessary free play of pivotal motion at the points where they are nearly in contact with said knuckles or eyes; also Specification of Letters Patent.

by a corresponding flange or lip A B or C of the same size and location, integral with section N and in contact with the lips A, B and C respectively as shown in Figs. 3, 4: and 5. There are thus threepairs of such lips A A, B B and C C of the same slightly resilient material as the two halves of the case, though the corresponding lips of the two series need not be of the same thickness no resiliency. It is not even necessary that both lips of each engaging pair should be appreciably resilient. These lips do not have the cylindrical curvature of the said knuckles, but the lips A, B and G of cover section M are flat and nearly at a right angle to the latter and the correspond ing lips A B and C are slightly inclined or bent in from the plane of section N, the relative shape and size of each pair of lips being calculated to keep their outer parts in contact in every position and to leave the sections M N under no resilient action when half way open, but to exert resilient action for quickly throwing the cover section M quite open as soon as it is moved in that direction beyond this neutral point of half opening, also for similarly snapping it closed as soon as it is moved in the other direction beyond this neutral point. This resilient act-ion in either direction requires no spring, the resiliency of the lips and the neighboring parts of the two case-sections being quite sufficient I prefer to use celluloid as the material for the case, but of course am not confined thereto. The said lips act as a brake or stop for one position only of the cover with relation to the body of the case. In every other position the resiliency of the lips A, B, C will operate to close or open the cover, aided usually more or less by the resilient action of lips A B C and adjoining parts. In other words, as soon as either section of the case is moved out of such position, or both sections are thus moved, the lips act to turn the said sections on the hinge-pintle O in one direction or the other.

I am aware that spectacle cases have been provided with brakes bearing on the hinges to hold the lid of the spectacle case to any position to which it may be moved, but this construction or any other effecting the same result, I do not use nor claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A spectacle case consisting of two hinged sections having engaging lips distinct from the hinges and out of contact therewith, said lips being adapted to yieldingly hold said sections partly open in one position, but to operate by resiliency to complete the opening or closing of said case on the movement of a section out of said position.

2. A spectacle case cover having a resilient lip, in combination with the body of said case having a corresponding lip in con tact therewith, said cover and body being hinged together, said lips being distinct from said hinges and out of contact therewith, and the aforesaid resiliency acting to expedite the opening or closing of the case.

8. A spectacle case consisting of two sections hinged together and provided with a pair of cooperating resilient lips, one of which is nearly at right angles to the plane of its section, and the two being arranged to maintain continual contact and to exert resilient action in completing the opening and closing of the case, but to leave it free from such action when the sections are in a certain intermediate position.
