'mNpING-NET HOLDER.
Patented Apr. 30, 1912..
serial No. 621,601.
To all whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. SARGENT, a citizen Vof the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain newl and useful Improvements in Landing-Net I-Iolders, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to an improved means for removably holding a landing-net on the back of a fisherman, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The use of a landing-net vby fishermen may only be called for occasionally, and if carried in the hand or suspended by a flexible cord it is often in the way and apt to interfere with the movements and operations of the fisherman.
Now my concept is to provide a device to support the landing-net on the back of the fisherman where it cannot easily become entangled or be in the way, and furthermore, so that the landing-net may lie flat against the shoulders in a vertical position with the handle proj ect-ing downwardly where it may` be conveniently and quickly reached when occasion requires. The device is also particularly constructed to permit removal and replacement of the landing-net without unnecessary delay or trouble and also to give a measure of adjustabilityl and adaptability of shift or change in position to permit they wearer -to have perfect freedom of movement without constraint, particularly at the arms and shoulders. My improvement is also preferably made a detachable portion of the garment for obvious reasons.
In the accompanying4 drawings, Figure l is a view illustrating a landing-net and my device on,l the back of a fisherman. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detachable landing-net holder in the form it appears when ready for attachment to a coat or other article of Wearing apparel, and Fig. 3 is a similar view but showing the pins closed as when attached. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line y-y, Fig. 8.
As shown, my improvement comprises a clamping member or clip 2 of flat spring metal formed in the segment of a circle and having diverging or flaring free ends 3, whereby a round handle i of a landing-net 5 may be removably or replaceablyl held therein. -Clip 2 is rotatably mounted or swiveled upon a metal backing plate 6 by a single rivet 7 or its equivalent, and plate 6 has prongs 8 at its edges to crimp or fasten a strip of leather or other flexible material 9 thereto at its front. Strip 9 is 0f greater length than plate 6 to provide free flexible ends l() which have a series of openings 11 therein adapted to receive t-he pointed ends of spring pins 12. Three openings 11 are shown at either side one directly below the other to permit the pin to pass through to the rear of strip 9 and then back to the front and then the rear again to protect the point. Pins 12 are formed of a single piece of wire which is coiled centrally between its ends around rivet 7 at a point between strip 9 and back of clip 2. The tendency of the spring coil 14 is to `spread axially of the rivet so that clip 2 is more or less frictionally engaged and held against the curved rivet head 15. Backing plate 6 is of advantage in providing av flat and stable seat on garment A and flexible strip 9 or rather its ends 10 are of convenience in attaching and detaching the device by its pins to the garment. I-Iowever, I may use other fastening means than as shown, as my invention, viewed broadly, comprises a clamping member' and supporting means therefor adapted to be secured on the back of a fisherman to hold and grip the handle of a landing-net approximately at or about the waist line, said landing-net being otherwise free to permit bending movements without constraint.- v The landing-.netis in this manner easily carried and at the same time protected by the body of the wearer in passing t-hroughbrush entanglements; and is also easily removed and replaced by either hand.
My improved holder is shown in Figs. 3 and 5 as fastened to a portion of a belt A which may be a part of garment A or separate therefrom.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A landing-net holder adapted to be pinned on the-back of a fisherman, comprising a substantially Vrigid metallic plate, a spring clip mounted centrally and rotatably thereon, a flexible strip secured to one side of said plate and having holes in its ends and a wire fastening pin to secure the holder to a garment having pointed ends adapted to engage through the holes in said flexible strip into a suitable support.
2. A landing-net holder for l fishermen, comprising a rigid substantially fiat backing-plate, a flexible strip of greater length than said plate secured thereto, a spring 5 clamping member` having a rivet support ro tatabiy mounted in said plate and a spring Wire pinning device having a central coil about said shank and pins at its ends adaptmeines ed to be engaged through said Hexibie strip in die garment on the fisherman.
In testimony whereof I. affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
