To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRBY BOT- TLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Mani folding Sales-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to sales books, and with regard to the more specific features thereof, to manifolding sales books adapted to be used by clerks in stores.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical form of sales book which will be convenient to handle.

Another object is to provide a manifolding sales book using continuous fold sheets with means whereby the record of the sales made may be accurately kept in the book.

Another object is to provide practical and efficient means for checking up the sales made by each clerk.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown two of various possible moditications, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of book; Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal sectional view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a modification showing a book opening at the side instead of the end.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.

Mounted upon the backing 4. is a removable pad, comprising a plurality of duplicate and original sheets 8 and 9, respectively. As herein shown and described, this pad is of that style generally known as continuous fold or zig-zag as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. Manifolding material, such as carbon sheet, 10, is associated therewith in order that the record may be made in duplicate. It is, however, to be understood that the carbon sheet may be omitted and the back of the original sheet carbonized if so desired.

The end of the backing a opposite its hinged connection 5 is preferably cut away at 11 in order that the duplicate sheets may be held in position on the under side of the backing when the. device is opened, or until the edge of the sheet is perforated by the pins 7 on closing the device. There is also provided upon the support 1 a plurality of holding pins 12 engaging suitable recesses or cut away portions 13 in the backing 4;. These pins l? are adapted to be engaged by one end of the duplicate sheet and hold the same in proper relative position upon the support 1 until forced down upon the filing pins 7 by the backing 4: as alcove described.

The duplicate sheet as shown in Fig. l is divided into two parts denoted by the numerals S and 14, separated by a line of perforations 15 in order that the same may be conveniently separated. The shorter of these two parts, that is 14. may be kept by the clerk as a voucher for the sale made. and filed upon the filing pins between the support and backing in substantially the manner above described. the part B being sent to the cashier with the amount received, while the original sheet 0 is delivered to the customer with the goods purrhafsed.

The cover 3 is provided with a pocket 17 (Fig. 1) into which the edges of the detached levers may be temporarily placed.

After entirely using one pad the vouchers may be removed from the filing pins and bound together by a rubber band, or binding clips, and retained by the clerk.

Referring to Fig. 3, the construction is substantially the same as that above described, only in this case the backing 4 is hinged along one side of the support, and the cover 2, with pocket 17, at the opposite side thereof. The pins 12 are positioned at the lower end of the support in a similar manner, and engage the holes of the cut away portions 13 in the back. Instead of having the holding flange for the sales vouchers positioned transversely on the rear of the backing it is more convenient to place the same along one edge, for as the book is held in the left hand and opened substantially as shown in Fig. 3 the voucher may be more conveniently slipped into position until forced upon the filing pins on the closing of the book.

The operation and manner of use of a device of this character is substantially as follows: A record of the sales is made upon the original sheet in a well known manner, and the same is recorded upon the duplicate sheet through the manifolding means. The original and duplicate sheets are then torn from the pad, the original sheet being dclivered to the customer with the goods purchased, while the duplicate sheet is retained by the clerk, who swings the backing awav from the support and places the sheet with its lower edge resting upon the pins 12. On closing the device the sheet is forced down upon the pins which perforate the sheet and hold the same against removal when the backing is again swung away to re ceive the duplicate record of the next transaction. If the sheets are of that style shown in Fig. 1 the duplicate sheet is separated into its two parts, one part being sent. to the cashier while the other part is tiled in the back of the book in substantially the manner above described. It is to be noted that the pins 7 are slightly inclined toward the holding pins whereby as the sheets are forced down upon the tiling pin the lower edge. will be moved away from the holding pins 12, thereby positively preventing buckling of the duplicate sheets as they anfiled. and also leave the holding pins lrer to receive the edge of the duplicate sheet al all times.

positioned and arranged so as to permit the same to be easily and quickly handled by the clerks, thereby accomplishing, among others, the objects and advantages above setforth.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely ditferent. embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the aceon'ipanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specitic features of the invention herein de scribed and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a pair of hinged members, a pad directly associated with one of said members, and a filing permanently con nected with one of said members and positioned thereon to perforate and hold sheets of said pad after being torn therefrom and placed between said hinged members.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a support, a pin near one end of said support, a backing flexibly secured to the other end thereof, and a pad of continuous original and duplicate leaves mounted upon said backing, said backing having a cut-away portion at the end opposite its flexible connection whereby a leaf after being t letached from said pad may be held by the operator in proper relative po sition until perforated by said pin upon closing the device.

7. In a device of the character described, in combination, a support, a plurality of inclined pins near one end of said support, a backing flexibly secured to the other end thereof, and a pad of continuous original and duplicate leaves mounted upon said backing, said backing having a cut-away portion at the end opposite its flexible connection whereby a leaf after being detached from said pad may be held by the operator in proper relative position until perforated by said pins upon closing the device.

8. In a device of the character described, in combination. a support. a filing gin near one end thereof. a backing hinged at the opposite end having a cut-away portion through which said tiling pin may pass, a pin mounted upon one of said members near the hinged connection engaging a recess in the other member. and a pad mounted upon said backing. the sheets of said pad being adapted to be torn therefrom and placed between said support and said backing and held in proper relative position by said second mentioned pin until perforated by the filing pin.

9. 11. In a device of the character described, in combination, a support, a backing hinged upon one end thereof, holding pins and filing pins mounted upon one of said members near the opposite ends thereof engaging cutaway portions in the other of said members, a pad of continuous leaves forming duplicate and original sheets mounted upon said backing, one of said sheets being perforated intermediate its ends, manifolding means associated therewith, said sheets adapted to be torn from said pad and separated into parts, temporary holding means upon the under side of said backing adapted to receive one of the parts of said separated sheet and to hold the same in proper relative position until perforated by the filing pin, a cover hinged to one edge of said support, and a pocket in said cover.

12. In a device of the character described, in combination, a support, a backing flexibly hinged to one side thereof, lil ing pins mounted upon said support engaging cut away portions in said backing, and a pad of continuous sheets mounted on said backing having a. cut away portion at the end thereof adjacent said filing pins whereby the sheets when torn from said pad may be placed upon the under side of said backing and held by the operator through said cut away portion until engaged by the filing pins.

13. In a device of the character described, in combination, a support, a backing flexibly hinged to one side thereof. tiling pins mount:- ed upon said support engaging cut away portions in said backing, a pad of continuous sheets mounted on said backing having a cutaway portion at the end thereof adjacent said filing pins whereby the sheets when torn from said pad may be placed upon the underside ot'said barking and held by the operator through said cut away portion until engaged by the tiling pins. and a cover for said device flexibly secured to the opposite side of said support.
