T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN VILSON MAC- DONALD, citizen of the United States, residing at lVilkinsburg, in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Said improvements relate to that class of heaters in which gas is used as fuel, and are designed to provide a convenient portable heater that may be suspended from the wall of any room where connection can be made with a gas supply; and consist in such features of construction as to require but few parts, and such combination of those parts as to form a device by which it is possible to develop a maximum amount of heat with a minimum consumption of gas,
Referring to the drawings hereto attached-Figure 1, is a longitudinal view, partly in elevation, and partly in section, of a heater embodying the improvements herein described. Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of one of the heads of the heating chamber of said heater. Fig. 3, is a view in perspective of the sheet metal cylinder forming the body part or heating chamber of said heater, showing longitudinal opening for the admission of air and the gas flame. Fig. 4, is an enlarged plan view of the burner for said heater, showing longitudinal apertures in the upper side thereof.
In constructing this improved heater a cylindrical shaped body 1 is formed from sheet metal in such manner as to leave a longitudinal opening 2 therein throughout the length thereof. perforated ends parts 3 form heads for said body 1 having flanges 4 provided with lugs 5 at the under side of the heater, which heads are of such size as to permit the ends of the cylindrical body 1 to fit neatly inside the flanges 4 in such manner that the lugs 5 will act as spreaders to hold said body part in such position as to maintain therein the longitudinal opening 2; and as this heater is designed to be suspended from brackets attached to a wall or other permanent object, screw eyes 6 for that purpose, are inserted in the flanges at directly above the position of the lugs 5. On heads 3 and directly below said lugs 5 flanged project-ions 7 are provided, adapted to support a burner 8 which latter is constructed of metal tubing having its extremities closed by suitable means, and provided midway of its length with a fitting having depending therefrom an ordinary gas and air mixing chamber 9 provided with a gas jet for connection with a gas supply. Narrow apertures 10 are cut in the upper side of burner 8 and extend in opposite directions from near its center to the ends thereof, to form exits for the gas and air that will flow into the burner. A threaded rod 11 having nuts 12 passing through the center of the heads 3 lengthwise of the body 1 serves to bind the parts together when assembled. The heat to which said rod 11 is exposed causes it to expand, and to avoid the loosening of the parts that would otherwise follow such expansion, a compensating spiral spring 13 is employed.
The several parts referred to may be as sembled by placing the ends of the body 1 inside the flanges 4 of the heads 3 thereby bringing the lugs 5 in between the edges of the sheet metal forming said body, and thus forming the longitudinal opening 2 in the underside thereof. At the same time the ends of the burner 8 with the apertures 10 uppermost, are placed in the flanged projections 7 thereby bringing the burner 8 to a position slightly below the center of the longitudinal opening 2 in the body 1 and parallel therewith. The rod 11 can now be passed through the body 1 and heads 3 of the heating chamber, and the spring 13 placed in position on said rod outside one of the heads 3 and the whole bound together by bringing said spring to tension by means of the screw nut 12.
In operation, the mixture of gas and air that will flow into the burner 8 through the mixer 9 will make its exit by way of the narrow aperture in the upper side of the burner, and upon being ignited will form a short intensely hot zone of flame extending nearly the entire length of said burner, and reaching upward and just through the longitudinal opening in the underside of the heating chamber above it; and the air in said chamher becoming thereby highly heated, will flow out through the perforations in the heads thereof, and be replaced by free air that will flow into said chamber by way of said longitudinal opening; and as the mix ture of gas and air flowing from the burner will be directly in the track of the current of free air flowing through said longitudinal opening; it will combine therewith, and form a mixture which will be highly combustible, and when ignited, will burn without resulting odor, while highly heating the free air flowing into the body of the heater, causing it to be expanded, and thus producing a flow of air from the heater that will be hot and free of any odor.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A heater of the class described, comprising a cylindrical horizontally-disposed bodyportion having a longitudinal opening extending its entire length, suitable perforated flanged heads at each end of said body-portion, a bolt connecting the one head with the other, a means comprising a spring and threaded nut at .one end of said bolt to take up the expansion, each head provided with a lug adapted to be inserted in and maintain the longitudinal opening of the bodyportion, a longitudinally disposed slotted burner arranged beneath and parallel with the longitudinal opening of the body-portion, and depending sockets formed integral with the heads to receive the ends of said burner and support the same in position.
